Was Carl not living in Germany before he came to Weatherfield, if so, chances are his paperwork should be in order. Not sure about Abi though, but it will make it easier for Carltodump her.

Talking of Abi and Carl...Abi sent Carl off to Speed Daal to get her a curry, but Alya was in the pub and Leanne was at the hotel. I suppose other staff could have been on duty at Speed Daal, but it's not good for the bosses to swan off on one of the busiest nights of the year!
