Coronation Street star Joe Layton has confirmed that he has exited the soap after his final scene aired.

The actor joined the ITV series as the villainous Mick Michaelis back in February, with the character being introduced as a character from Kit Green's past who had revenge on his mind.

After several months of drama, it was revealed that Mick had been incarcerated for a crime that was committed by Kit, with the police officer also being confirmed as the father of Brody following an affair with Mick's wife, Lou.

Upon his arrival in Weatherfield, Mick was imprisoned once again after he killed Craig Tinker, with recent scenes seeing him escape from prison. Following a brutal confrontation with Kit, Mick found himself behind bars again.

Though there is scope for Mick to return in the future, the villain won't be seen on the cobbled streets anytime soon, with Layton confirming that he had filmed his final scenes for the time being.

"I swear to god that better be Mick's last scene #Corrie," wrote one viewer on X, to which Layton replied: "Affirmative. [I] loved my time on the cobbles!" The actor was also greeted by several comments from other fans, who praised his performance.

"You were brilliant Joe! Can't wait to see what's next #Corrie," wrote the same fan, with another adding: "You have been phenomenal @jay_layts been proper scary at times, you have portrayed mick so bloody well."

"So well acted - we loathed Mick from the start. A short sharp shock to the street. Good luck for the future," commented one other fan, with another writing: "What a brilliantly played character, I hated the character with every bone in my body, well done you."

Layton's exit comes before that of his co-star Farrel Hegarty, who plays his on-screen wife Lou. Ahead of her departure, Hegarty said: "Joe and I came in together and will leave together? When I do film my final scenes, I'll probably cry."

Coronation Street writer Jan McVerry has hinted at a return for Mick and Lou Michaelis, just months after the controversial couple were locked up in prison.

Appearing on the Stateside Street podcast last week, McVerry said: "We brought in the Michaelis family, him [Mick] and Lou, [it was] very explosive, hit the ground running.

"The viewers hated them, but they brought a lot of drama with them, and they've left us a great legacy with Brody. It's not the end of the family," she continued. "We are going to hear from them again."

Played by Joe Layton and Farrel Hegarty, Mick and Lou Michaelis were introduced in February 2025, with the characters billed as "nightmare neighbours", following their move to Mawdsley Street.

After it was revealed that Mick had been abusing Lou at home, Mick was eventually arrested for the murder of PC Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) in May, and while Mick managed to orchestrate a prison break in July, attacking his long-time enemy Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) in the process, he was eventually caught and taken back to his cell.

As for Lou, the character found herself in a similar situation after it was revealed that she had attacked Gary Windass (Mikey North), putting him in a coma. With Lou locked up in July, the mum-of-three decided to leave her children ? Joanie (Savanna Pennington), Shanice (Molly Kilduff) and Brody (Ryan Mulvey) ? in the care of foster parents Sally (Sally Dynevor) and Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine), thus concluding her arc.

According to McVerry, the writers had always known that they had limited time to tell the Michaelis' story, particularly in the case of Mick.

"Our hands were tied with Mick, who I thought was a really, really good actor because he had another job to go to," she noted.

"He had some theatre work to go to, unfortunately for us, so we knew there was a ticking clock, and at this point, we were going to have to release the actor. Sometimes that's really helpful, because you know that you're going to crank up the pace of the story and it's going to end there, and it's very helpful to know that you've got something to work towards. Personally, I was also gutted because I thought he was such a good actor."
