Home and Away Spoilers: Irene?s farewell gift to John
The tearful end is here, H&A fans.

    https://www.nowtolove.com.au/enterta...ilers-irene-2/

It?s a huge week in Home and Away as Irene farewells John and Cohen sees his father return.

From hearing that his mother no longer wants to be his guardian, to meeting his estranged father, young Cohen has been pulled in many different directions. And fighting to keep him close is loyal Roo. But will the potential foster mother now have to let him go?

In Home And Away this week Cohen (Nathan Murray) yearns to learn more about his dad, Adrian (Tom Matthews), who recently came into his life. But Adrian?s bond with Cohen is clouded with fear.

Adrian claims he doesn?t know how to be a dad and Roo (Georgie Parker) worries that part of him doesn?t actually want to be one. But, for Roo, who?s in the process of becoming Cohen?s foster mother, the idea of saying goodbye to the boy is simply too much.

?Cohen has begun to trust her and can see how caring she is,? Nathan, 15, says of their bond.

Adrian arrives at Roo?s house for dinner and excitedly tells Cohen about his family, promising that he?ll introduce the youngster to them all.

But, the next day, while Cohen and Alf (Ray Meagher) are bonding over fishing and family yarns, Roo stumbles upon Adrian packing his car. Without explanation, he abruptly claims that he has to leave: ?Tell Cohen I?m sorry.?

Roo is devastated ? it wasn?t that long ago that she had to break the news to Cohen that his mother didn?t want guardianship, and now his father has seemingly abandoned him too.

?That [decision by his mother] crushed Cohen and so it was very hard for Roo to break this news to him,? Nathan explains.

It?s another crushing blow for the young man who fears no one cares for him. Noticing how heart-broken he is, Roo heads to the police station and asks Sergeant David (Jeremy Lindsay Taylor) for Adrian?s address. She?s going to track him down and make him hear her out.

Can she convince Adrian to come back? Or will she just drive the reluctant dad further away?

    Also This Week...

While the thought of saying goodbye to Irene Roberts has hit home for many, no one has been more affected than her best friend, John.

During her farewell party, hosted by the Summer Bay community, music is playing, love and laughter are in the air, but the man who means the most to Irene (Lynne McGranger) is missing.

Since announcing she is leaving Summer Bay to travel the world, Irene has faced resistance and fear from John (Shane Withington). He worries for her safety as her Alzheimer?s progresses, but what he won?t say out loud is that he?ll miss her.

With the party in full swing, Irene begins to worry that he?s not coming. No one knows his whereabouts and, as the hours tick on, he still doesn?t show.

As speeches begin, John finally appears and the friends share a tight embrace, knowing it could be for the last time. John raises a glass, hushing the crowd to begin his words.

With admiration and praise, the town celebrates a local legend ? and John farewells the ?bravest woman? he?s ever known, before dancing with her.

Keep your tissues handy, H&A fans.

    In Lynne?s own words...

?I want to reiterate how grateful I am to all the fans and everyone who has supported and travelled with Irene on her journey.

    To everyone I?ve connected with
in person and on social media ? and even the people I?ve driven up the wall, who have kindly
told me so! It?s been a wild ride. I?m extremely blessed.?

Home and Away airs Monday to Thursday at 7pm on Channel Seven

Sydney Daily Telegraph article after Irene's final episode tonight:

How Irene left Home and Away after decades

After more than three decades on-screen Lyne McGregor finally left Summer Bay in one of the soap?s most emotional episodes ever.

    https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/en...afeab977a41be4

After decades as one of the most beloved stars on Australian TV, Home and Away veteran Lynne McGranger bid farewell to Summer Bay and her legendary character Irene Roberts.

Over the past 33 years, Irene has become part of the fabric of the fictional seaside community, having taken in multiple foster children and offering a safe haven to those in need.

She has been at the centre of many of Home and Away?s biggest storylines, including her battle with alcoholism, a breast cancer diagnosis, the shock arrival of a long-lost son, a ferry boat sinking, a bomb explosion, a plane crash, and a stint in prison for a murder she did not commit.

It was an emotional episode that saw Irene leave Summer Bay ?with a bang?, getting the send off she deserves.

It began with a farewell party so everyone had one last chance to say goodbye before she embarked on her new life exploring the world.

Party music was playing, love and laughter was in the air, but it wasn?t quite perfect. The man who means the most to Irene was nowhere to be seen.

Ever since she first announced that she was leaving to travel the world, Irene faced resistance from John Palmer (Shane Withington), who has in recent episodes been concerned about her Alzheimer?s progressing, but held too much pride to admit he?ll miss her.

As Summer Bay?s residents made their speeches, John finally makes a welcomed appearance, and the pair share a bittersweet goodbye that sees them both with tears in their eyes.

?I want you to meet me at the Eiffel Tower,? Irene says, revealing that she?s bought him a ticket to join her in Paris.

?So you see, it?s not goodbye, it?s au revoir,? she laughs.

?I will be there,? insists John. ?In hell or high water, I will be there!?

As she?s driven away from the Bay, Irene takes one last look out the window at the community she called a home for more than three decades and smiles, as a letter she left behind is read out in her voice.

?Most importantly, take care of each other. At the end of the day, that?s what matters. Friends and family,? she says.

?No regrets?? Irene is asked, to which she grins and replies with her signature pet name, ?None, love.?

    ?Life?s too short,? she finishes.

McGranger, who in 2023 was voted by viewers as the second Greatest Australian TV Character of All Time by TV Week, and picked up the coveted Gold Logie earlier this month, confessed that her decision to quit the soap was ?bittersweet? for her.

?After almost 33 years in my dream role and working every day with people who I love, respect and whom I now consider family, it?s bittersweet to be closing the chapter on what has been the best and longest gig of my life.?

She continued: ?I am forever grateful to the best production crew in the world and to our genius writers ? whose doors are always open ? for everything they have done for Irene over the past 33-odd years, and I am so proud of the storyline which will see Irene out of the Bay. Above all, a massive, heartfelt thank you to the fans for your continued love and support.?

    And the Nowtolove.com.au article:

?My very honest opinion on Irene Robert?s exit storyline?
"How do you say goodbye to a beloved character - and do the storyline justice?"

    https://www.nowtolove.com.au/enterta...-exit-opinion/

    OPINION

For as long as I can remember, Summer Bay has been home to some of the most villainous, courageous and heart-warming characters on Australian TV. But within its three-decade tenure, few have mastered the redemption arc like Irene Roberts.

For much of the nineties, viewers immediately disliked her erratic behaviour and alcoholic dependency. But instead of sending her down the path of destruction and ultimate demise, Home and Away gave her a steady place to land, one that would see her go from zero to hero.

Add in a few colloquialisms and a trademark, ?Flippin? Hell!? and you?ve got yourself an Aussie battler with a heart big enough to hold the love for her own kids, and the foster kids she helped raise.

In other words, she was someone we could root for. And we did, for 33 years.

So when it came to farewelling Irene Roberts, the fictional character has become somewhat of national interest. Dedicated and casual viewers united ? even those who had never watched an episode! ? tuned in to see how she would leave.

It was heavily promoted with no clear indication as to how she would exit. And as a barrage of interviews with Lynne McGranger found their way onto our phones, screens and hands in the lead-up, it garnered interest and sparked debate.

Often, I was asked, ?Do you know how she leaves?? by my nearest and dearest. And if that wasn?t enough, the TV WEEK Gold Logie award (and the Silver Logie!) certainly drove home her cultural impact.

So with all that in mind, how do you say goodbye ? and do it justice?

In her final episode of Home and Away, the Summer Bay community put on a party for the ages. A real ?rip-snorter? as requested by Irene, herself.

After being diagnosed with Alzheimer?s, Irene has decided to see the world while she still can and wants to be remembered the way she is ? not who she will become.

The tables were dressed, the non-alcoholic mocktails were flowing and Theo (Matt Evans) took to the microphone for an afternoon of music and melancholy.

While fans may have been expecting a blast from the past to make an appearance, they ? like myself ? might be slightly disappointed.

These big moments have a way of giving us great expectations and I had hoped to have an ?Ahh!? moment when a former star walked onto the screen.

It wasn?t to be, and maybe in hindsight, it could?ve pulled focus as the episode chose to center on the smaller, heartfelt moments. And as Alf says, bloody John Palmer! He almost did pull focus with his disappearing act.

Happily, in my opinion, there were no flashbacks. They?re too easy and tend to make an episode feel more like a special than a storyline. Instead, these were played out in previous episodes allowing the farewell to become a snapshot in time that captures her vibrant personality.

Perhaps, in a way, it?s also how Lynne McGranger would prefer to be remembered for her years on the show ? in lieu of a tragic, tear-jerking end.

Through speeches tears, hugs and a tug on our heartstrings with two Aussie ballads from Jessica Mauboy and a rendition of Alex Lloyd?s ?Amazing?, Home and Away doubled down on its strengths ? togetherness and hope in even the most difficult of times.

We know deep down where her inevitable end will be but for now, she?s full of life and intent on making it count ? a little reminder for all of us at home.

In the words of Irene ?Bless you, Love.?
