Incidentally, another thing I am not clear about...Where exactly was this cul-de-sac that Mick drove down and why were Maria and Sarah walking down it?

It was the back of Weatherfield Precinct (audio description). My first thought when I saw Maria there. My answer, was that they could not afford an extra to play a random passer-by to find Craig, as surely would have happened in real life. But that would have denied us Maria's scenes of distress. Incidentally I found Gary's sympathy and suppor less than convincing.
