Coronation Street lines up new rift for Evelyn and Cassie amid dognapping story

Coronation Street is lining up a new rift between Evelyn Plummer and daughter Cassie.

The ITV soap has kicked off a new dognapping storyline this week, as Evelyn ends up taking a dog off villainous new character Terry after seeing him mistreating the animal.

Yet Evelyn puts herself in danger by crossing Terry as he starts to threaten her and her family, with the storyline leading to Evelyn and Cassie discovering a puppy farm.

However, while mother and daughter join forces, star Dame Maureen Lipman has revealed that it won't be the start of a positive step in their relationship.

"I can tell you that that does not last because Cassie is a chip off the old block but to some degree an extended version of Evelyn and she goes too far and that endangers Evelyn's life and gets her into more trouble," she explained.

"Blood is thicker than water in Coronation Street but they do fall out over this, even though they are in it together, simply because she goes farther than Evelyn would have done."

The soap has been collaborating with animal welfare charity the RSPCA on the new storyline, with Lipman recently revealing that she was shocked to learn about some of the facts around puppy farms.

"I did some research of my own and was shocked by what I discovered," she admitted. "I had not realised that these puppies are sold for ?2,000 a throw and these people are not registered and they're earning billions with puppy farms springing up all over the place."

Dame Maureen Lipman will be taking another break from Coronation Street.

A spokesperson for the ITV1 soap has confirmed to Digital Spy that Dame Maureen will reprise her role as Evelyn Plummer following some time away from the cobbles.

"Dame Maureen is taking a sabbatical from Coronation Street towards the end of the year. We look forward to seeing her back on the cobbles in 2025," a show spokesperson told us.

Dame Maureen's break will coincide with the esteemed actor performing in panto ? as she has signed on for the Richmond Theatre's production of Beauty and the Beast.

She will be playing Mrs Potty opposite comedian and magician Pete Firman from Saturday, December 7, 2024, through Sunday, January 5, 2025. Tickets are available now from ATG for ?13 and up (subject to a transaction fee of ?3.95).

Dame Maureen has taken sporadic breaks from Coronation Street throughout her time on the cobbles, including a temporary departure last year following the arrival of her long-lost daughter Cassie.

At the time of her 2023 break, the actor said she'd been doing some of the most intensive filming of her soap career to set up her departure.

"They?ve really put me through it the last few weeks. I?ve had seven scenes to learn a day," she recalled. ?The last shot [from] last night, I literally laid on the floor and said: ?I can?t go on'."

Since her return to Weatherfield, Evelyn Plummer was involved in a nasty feud with a dodgy dog breeder and supported Roy Cropper in his recent prison stint.

Dame Maureen joined the ITV1 soap on a full-time basis in 2018 as Tyrone Dobbs' grandmother, after a prior stint in 2002 playing a different character.

Coronation Street star Dame Maureen Lipman has spoken about her character's upcoming exit plot for the first time.

Back in July, it was revealed that Dame Maureen will be taking a sabbatical from her role as Evelyn Plummer later this year.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy on the red carpet at the Inside Soap Awards on Monday evening (September 30), Dame Maureen promised that the door will be left open for Evelyn to return down the line.

She quipped: "Well the idea is that I don't get killed off, battered or thrown into Manchester Ship Canal. But I just step back ? something happens to me and I go off, but always with the option that I can come back.

"Because you don't want to lose? I don't want to lose Evelyn! You know that song, 'I Know Him So Well'?

"Sometimes the scripts are wonderful and sometimes they're fine but Evelyn always comes out with the right quip at the right time."

Asked whether she still enjoys her time on the show, Dame Maureen replied: "I love it, yeah. Actors like to have a family around them. It's nice to walk into a Manchester building and have someone say: 'Oh hello, Maureen, did you have a nice weekend?' I like that."

Dame Maureen was speaking following the news that she had won the Best Comedy Performance prize at the Inside Soap Awards.

Impressively, this is the fourth consecutive year that she has taken the award home.

Reflecting on this year's victory, Dame Maureen added: "It's an audience award, so they're voting for Evelyn Plummer, not really for Maureen Lipman!

"That's the way it should be. She's a good character for Corrie. She's classic Corrie ? and she doesn't murder anybody and she doesn't do autopsies on people.

"She's just not very kosher, you know ? she's just a bit belligerent. People like that because everybody really wants to be belligerent but they haven't got the guts!"

When Dame Maureen's Corrie sabbatical was first announced in July, a spokesperson for the show told Digital Spy: "Dame Maureen is taking a sabbatical from Coronation Street towards the end of the year. We look forward to seeing her back on the cobbles in 2025."

The Inside Soap Awards took place in London and saw Corrie win six prizes on the night, including the coveted Best Soap gong.
