Billy probably did phone Lydia because he knew what happened with her and Craig. But I would have thought that after his experience with Alex, he would not want to be see doing anything suspicious if the police start checking phones, it could look like he was warning Lydia. It would also have spared us the is Dingle family therapy session in the pub if he had not called her.
