Didn't he ditch his original phone to avoid the police seizing it and examining incriminating photos/messages on it?
Mind you, if the police found out the number, then his mobile service provider would have records the police could check - for calls and SMS anyway.
That's never been mentioned - so far anyway.

It's never been mentioned because if they actually checked the evidence, it would fly in the face of all that we know and love about the incompetency of the Weatherfied police.
