That's just it. I don't believe he tried at all. He just wanted to give the illusion that he did to freak out Belle who would be afraid for his mental health and to hopefully get the court to see that he wasn't fit to stand trial. I hope the shrink sees right through his miserable self.
Of course he did not really want to do it... just pathetic that the doctors give him bandages when a plaster (band-aid) would have done...
