Brookside returns to TV! Iconic Liverpool-based soap will be shown in the UK after 20 years off air.

Brookside is making its return to screens across the UK after 20 years off air.

The iconic Liverpool-based soap will be streamed by Scottish TV channel STV, but the channel can be viewed by anyone living in Britain.

The soap, set in Liverpool, chronicled the lives of characters living in 13 houses on a cul-de-sac called Brookside Close.

Brookside star Dean Sullivan has died at the age of 68.
The actor, who was known to millions for playing Jimmy Corkhill in the iconic Channel 4 soap, died peacefully following a short illness.
?To millions he was and very much still is remembered as ?Jimmy?, to family and friends he was ?Dino,? read a statement from Hamilton Management and his family.

Dean was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018 and was discharged last year by his consultant following a course of radio therapy and at the time he urged people to ?listen to their bodies?.
The legendary actor landed the role of loveable rogue Jimmy Corkhill in 1986, four years after the soap kicked off.
Jimmy swiftly became a household name, with his dodgy antics and iconic ways making him a favourite with viewers. The character appeared across almost two decades of TV, with Dean remaining with Brookie right to its very end when it was controversially axed in 2003.
Dean spoke exclusively to Metro.co.uk earlier this year in the wake of the news that Brookside would re-run from the very beginning, telling us that he would still get recognised every day by the soap?s loyal and unwavering fanbase.
?Whenever I go out into the public, every day of my life somebody wants an autograph or a photograph or they want to speak, they want to engage,? he said. ?They?re always very complimentary to me, they always say we loved Jimmy.
?And they?re as baffled as anybody, a lot of people are asking those questions as to why did it finish. It was one of the best programmes on TV, one of the best soaps ever.?
Dean was a huge supporter of Brookside and he leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations to come, with Jimmy Corkhill often thought of as one of soap?s greatest ever creations.
The star often discussed the possibility of Brookside returning to our screens, much like Neighbours did following its cancellation, telling us that the Channel 4 soap would be just as relevant now in today?s world as it was when it commenced in 1982.
?I think it could work even more so these days because one of the big initial storylines, the Grants were a true working-class family.
That was one of the remits, as it were, from Channel 4 that the programme had to be relevant and touch on people?s lives. Back then in the 80s it was the Thatcher years with the miners? strikes and the unions and whether the unions had any power.
?You only need to turn on the news today and there?s strikes and the union bosses are talking about the talks or lack of talks with the government. It?s just as relevant as what we were doing in the 80s back when it first started.?
?Brookside dealt with the issues that people could identify with when it was first broadcast in 1982 and it?s extraordinary, here we are all these years later and it?s exactly what Brookside was doing right at the beginning. So not much has changed, really.
?I think there would be a massive appetite for it. If it does come back, who knows??
It was announced in January that STV has acquired the rights to stream Brookside from the very beginning. With the exception of the first two weeks, which saw 10 episodes drop, five outings of the classic soap have been added to the steaming service every week.
The comeback has proven a huge hit, with STV Player enjoying its best ever month in February as a result.


Brookside is available to stream on STV Player from the beginning, with five episodes added every Wednesday.

Axed Channel 4 soap Brookside is making a return, in a totally unexpected way.

As part of Hollyoaks' 30th anniversary celebration this year, there'll be a special episode crossing over with Brookie, as fans like to call it.

Running from 1982 to 2003, Brookside was the first soap created by Sir Phil Redmond (Grange Hill came first, but not technically counted as a soap) and laid the foundation for the kind of storytelling Hollyoaks would later adopt.

The special episode will be filming on location at what used to be Brookside Close in Liverpool, which is now a residential area. The locals will be invited to share lunch with the cast and crew while filming is taking place.

It's not just the location making an appearance, as some classic characters are set to make their return. We don't know who yet, but with filming set for September, it won't be too long before we find out.

"This episode is a love letter to both Hollyoaks and Brookside," said executive producer Hannah Cheers.

"Brookside gave birth to Hollyoaks ? it grew up on the same site and eventually took over its sets. For everyone at Lime Pictures (originally Mersey TV), Hollyoaks' history is deeply rooted in Brookside, and its legacy lives on through our crew and, of course, some of our cast.

"This special feels like both a moving and fitting tribute to our origin story and a chance for fans to revisit much-loved Brookside characters in honour of that legacy.

"These iconic Brookside characters are soap archetypes that helped define British TV; soap archetypes that new generations are still discovering now through Hollyoaks."

"As a lifelong soap fan who grew up watching with my mum, I was passionate about revisiting Brookside for the anniversary," she continued. "With Sir Phil's blessing ? after I had the privilege of pitching the idea to him ? and the support of Channel 4, we're able to make it happen.

"Writer Steve Hughes, who began his career on Brookside, has reimagined where these characters are more than twenty years on. We hope audiences will enjoy welcoming these old friends back into their homes once again."

Redmond added: "It is always bittersweet thinking back to Brookie, the reminders of its success and impact, but the thoughts of many, like Dean Sullivan and Bill Dean, who are no longer with us.

"But it is great that Lime Pictures are paying homage in their Hollyoaks anniversary crossover episodes.

"I can't wait to see how all the gardens are coping in the heatwave and, who knows, what might pop up if someone decides to re-lay their patio. I know we left something else down there..."

Brookside started to get added to the STV Player streaming service in 2023, right from the very beginning.

The reruns have set multiple records on the streamer, and it even added a Brookside spin-off at the start of this year.

These aren't the only two soaps set to cross over, as ITV's Coronation Street and Emmerdale will kick off the new 2026 schedule with a special episode of their own.
