Speaking to Digital Spy and other media, Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw teased a "huge" storyline to come, which could "maybe" bring Chas and Aaron "back together".

"There?s a huge story coming up for Chas in the new year that?s going to be shocking for all her family and friends and villagers around her," she said.

"We know that her and Aaron have got quite a strained relationship at the moment and Aaron?s really pushing his mum away.

"This could be the story that maybe brings those two back together and bonds mother and son again. That?s all for us to find out in the new year," Shaw added.

Emmerdale's Chas Dingle will receive a plea from Liam Cavanagh next week, as her breast cancer storyline begins.

The soap announced the character's devastating diagnosis earlier this week, following her mother Faith's tragic cancer story.

In upcoming scenes, Chas is forced to hide during a passionate embrace with Liam, when Paddy, Mandy and Eve unexpectedly arrive home.

Chas manages to remain out of sight, with Liam admitting to a suspicious Mandy that there is a woman in the house. He lies and says it's no one they'd know.

Before she leaves, Chas is taken aback when the village doctor confesses he felt a lump in her breast. Chas rushes to leave so she won't be seen, before breaking down when she gets outside.

The next day, Chas begins to worry about the lump. Meanwhile, Liam accidentally admits to Mandy and Paddy that he slept with Chas the day before.

When she finds out he spilled their secret, Chas goes to confront Liam ? anxious that he might have also shared news of the lump.

When she finds him, Liam reassures her but worries when Chas deflects from talking about the lump. He pleads with her to go to the GP and get it checked out.

Emmerdale is working with Breast Cancer Now for the upcoming storyline. Producer Kate Brooks explained the importance of the story, saying: "We approached Breast Cancer Now as we wanted to depict this story in the most authentic way possible.

"Any light we can shed on this disease and encourage and remind people to routinely check their breasts can hopefully help lead to more positive outcomes."

Chas actress Lucy Pargeter added: "I hope we can do it justice. It won't be all doom and gloom, there will be ups and downs just like with anything. But I hope it looks and feels real. And if just a few people get help for breast changes that do not feel or look right, it could do some good too."

    Unhappy

Emmerdale is set to air emotional scenes next week as Chas Dingle receives her cancer diagnosis.

The ITV soap recently announced a breast cancer storyline for Chas, which will prove especially devastating given her mother's tragic cancer story.

The plotline begins as Chas is having a fling with village doctor Liam Cavanagh, though he notices a lump in her breast and urges her to make an immediate appointment with her GP.

In follow-on scenes set to air next Monday (January 22), Chas gets a call that confirms her hospital appointment that afternoon, and asks Liam to accompany her ? leaving him pleased to be the chosen person to support her.

During the appointment, Chas receives the difficult news that she has triple negative cancer.

She later vents to Liam about her diagnosis back home, and it becomes clear to him that she is struggling despite trying to put on a brave face. Chas tells Liam to leave her to herself, and once he is gone she breaks down and cries.

The following day, Paddy notices something is wrong with Chas as he drops off Eve, but she covers for herself. Lydia also picks up that something is wrong, leading Chas to reveal her cancer diagnosis.

Liam overhears from the Woolpack corridor, and while he's happy to hear her opening up, he is also sad that he is no longer Chas's only confidant.

The day afterwards, Chas begins to research more information on her cancer diagnosis on her phone.

Speaking recently about the storyline, Emmerdale producer Kate Brooks said: "When this story was first pitched, we were acutely aware how important it was to explore this.

"With Chas's family history of breast cancer and Chas being such a strong character, and in many ways the bedrock of the Dingles, we wanted to show the impact on not just her, but her immediate family.

"With Lucy Pargeter's innate ability to showcase Chas's vulnerabilities beneath her hardened exterior, we knew she was absolutely the right character to play this with."

Emmerdale's Chas Dingle encourages three of her close family members to book genetic tests next week after receiving some news about her illness.

Chas has been taking a break from the village following the news that she has breast cancer, but she'll return home in the coming days as the next chapter of the storyline begins.

In new scenes, Chas tells her family that the cause of her cancer is the faulty BRCA2 gene.

Chas explains to her brothers Cain and Caleb and her son Aaron that there's a high likelihood they could have the faulty gene too. Cain and Caleb also learn that they could have passed it onto their children.

Looking for a distraction, Chas prepares to go and visit Mandy to celebrate her birthday.

Before Chas leaves, she notices Aaron's hesitant reaction and encourages him to make an appointment for his gene test referral.

Aaron remains uneasy and evasive as he feels pressured by Chas, but will he go ahead and make the appointment?

BRCA1 and BRCA2 are examples of genes which can raise a person's cancer risk if they become altered.

A woman who has a variant BRCA gene has an increased chance of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

The variant genes also increase a man's chance of developing male breast cancer and prostate cancer.

A genetic test can confirm whether a person has inherited one of the cancer risk genes. After a blood test is taken, the results usually arrive within two to four weeks.

Emmerdale announced Chas' breast cancer storyline last month.

Lucy Pargeter, who plays Chas, said at the time: "When the producers first discussed this storyline with me I knew I didn't want us to shy away from any aspect of this diagnosis for Chas.

"She saw her own mother ultimately die after an incurable breast cancer diagnosis, so for Chas to receive a breast cancer diagnosis herself, makes it all the more poignant. Our audience knows her so well, they have seen her relationships, know her faults, her passions, her insecurities, quirks and fears.

"So for them to see this story play out will be more meaningful given everything that has happened to both her and her mother. I think this is the beauty of our genre 'Soap'. However, I am more than aware of the huge responsibility with us telling this story.

"I hope we can do it justice. It won't be all doom and gloom, there will be ups and downs just like with anything. But I hope it looks and feels real. And if just a few people get help for breast changes that do not feel or look right, it could do some good too."

Emmerdale has worked with Breast Cancer Now on Chas's storyline. In addition to its website, Breast Cancer Now's helpline (0808 800 6000) is open 9am-4pm Monday to Friday and 9am-1pm on Saturday.

More information or support about living with breast cancer or treatment is available from organisations includingMacmillan Cancer Support, Coppafeel!, Cancer Research UK and Stand Up to Cancer.
