William Hurt will star opposite Russell Crowe in director Ridley Scott's big screen Robin Hood reinvention.

Hurt, whose name has been linked to the project for several months, will portray William Marshall, the Earl of Pembroke, a real-life figure and skilled jouster who was one of the most powerful men in Europe, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The medieval epic will delve into the origins of the key characters in the Robin Hood legend. Joining Crowe in the cast are Scott Grimes, Kevin Durand and Alan Doyle as Merry Men. Cate Blanchett will play Maid Marian, while Mark Strong and Vanessa Redgrave are also on board the movie.

The untitled Universal film is currently shooting in the UK.

Grieving star Vanessa Redgrave has pulled out of forthcoming movie Robin Hood, giving up the role which would have been her first acting job since the tragic death of her daughter Natasha Richardson.

The actress signed on to star in Sir Ridley Scott's blockbuster, alongside Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett, just a week after Richardson died from a brain injury following a skiing accident in March.

The acting legend was set to tackle the role of Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, mother of the folklore hero's nemesis Prince John, played by Oscar Isaacs.

But now it would appear Redgrave is not yet ready to return to work - Dame Eileen Atkins has confirmed she has accepted the part in the 2010 movie.

And Atkins admits she is "terrified" about the project.

She says, "They keep rewriting the script and changing my lines quite dramatically, so I'm terrified of forgetting them."

Poor Vanessa it's no surprise that she has decided to pull out of the movie. Eileen Atkins will be a good replacement though.

Rhys Ifans has signed on to star in upcoming blockbuster Nottingham - six months after his ex-girlfriend Sienna Miller was booted from the new Robin Hood movie.

The Welsh actor is preparing to play King Richard in Sir Ridley Scott's forthcoming film - after former flame Miller, 27, was dropped weeks before production began amid reports she was too young to play Maid Marian.

She was then replaced by Cate Blanchett, 40.

Rhys, who was reportedly engaged to the actress during their 2007-08 courtship, is said to have accepted the regal role after Scott personally invited him to join the cast.

A source tells Britain's Sunday Mirror, "Ridley thought Rhys was a recognisable face fans would love to see and would be perfect for the part.

"He made the call himself because he knew Rhys would be more likely to say yes to him in person. Luckily, Rhys had space in his schedule and jumped at the chance. But I'm not sure he would have joined up quite so easily if Sienna had still been one of the stars of the film."

The role is another boost to Ifans' growing movie career - earlier this year he wrapped filming the lead role in Mr Nice, the eagerly-anticipated biopic of Welsh drug smuggler Howard Marks, which is slated for release next year.

Russell Crowe's new Robin Hood movie has suffered two further safety scares with an actor and studio aide both injured in separate incidents.

Last month the $176 million (£110 million) Ridley Scott epic was brought to a halt after an unnamed actor was hurt during the filming of a battle scene in Wales.

British tabloid the Sunday Mirror reports the production has since been blighted with two further accidents on set.

An unnamed actor has reportedly broken his ankles after missing a crash mat in a high-wire fall at Pinewood studios in Buckinghamshire, England.

In a separate incident a studio worker has suffered neck injuries from falling into a pit at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, England.

The film, which also stars Cate Blanchett as Maid Marion, is due for release next year.

Danny Huston will play King Richard in Russell Crowe's Robin Hood, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Huston, who recently starred in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, has been cast as the historical figure known as Richard the Lionheart thanks to his heroics in the Third Crusade.

Production is currently underway on Robin Hood in the UK, with Ridley Scott directing the medieval epic from a script by Ethan Reiff, Cyrus Voris and Brian Helgeland.

The cast includes Crowe as the notorious outlaw, Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian, William Hurt as the Earl of Pembroke and Matthew Macfadyen as the Sheriff of Nottingham.
