Neighbours 40th Anniversary (the week commencing Monday, March 17)

    DS article:

Neighbours 40th anniversary spoilers revealed as Krista and Leo face major turmoil
    Will they be torn apart?

    https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/nei...a-leo-turmoil/

    Neighbours spoilers follow.

Neighbours stars Tim Kano and Majella Davis have shared details of their dramatic 40th anniversary storyline for the first time.

The actors' characters Leo Tanaka and Krista Sinclair will take centre stage next month as Neighbours celebrates an impressive 40 years on the air.

Show bosses have now officially confirmed that the milestone episodes will focus on Leo and Krista's wedding day.

Leo and Krista got engaged at Christmas, but storm clouds have been gathering for their relationship since then thanks to manipulation from Krista's best friend Sebastian Metcalfe and her half-sister Fallon Morell.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy about the exciting times ahead, Majella explained: "We got pulled into our producer Jason Herbison's office at the beginning of last year. He told us what was going on with Krista and Leo. He spoke about the whole story and it was an hour-long meeting because there was so much happening.

"Then at the end of this meeting, he said: 'And this is going to be for the 40th anniversary'. I was on the floor ? I almost passed out!"

Taking up the story, Tim continued: "It didn't really settle in until we walked out of the meeting. We were heading back to the green room like: 'Hang on, what? What's going on?'"

The first spoilers for anniversary week have been revealed today and they hint at big trouble for Leo and Krista's future.

Upcoming episodes see Sebastian make his return to Erinsborough, just as Fallon is stepping up her own cruel attempts to cause trouble for Krista.

In a huge new storyline twist, Fallon tells a devastating lie to Krista by claiming to have slept with Leo.

Without verifying whether this is true, Krista makes an impulsive decision by giving into temptation with Sebastian, who has always harboured feelings for her.

Majella recalled: "I was devastated when Jason told us. He said: 'Someone's going to do something naughty'. My first thought was: 'It's going to be Leo ? thank God I won't have to do anything like that!'

"But Krista thinks that Leo cheated on her, so it's a reckless moment of wanting to feel desired again when she thought that she wasn't anymore. It was justifiable in my head, but also pretty heartbreaking.

"When Krista then finds out that Leo didn't really cheat on her, it's like the world is spinning around her. It's Fallon and Seb who divulge all of the information to her. She also finds out that they used to be together, so it's just bomb after bomb after bomb. Krista realises what she's done and that Leo was not the cheater, so it's just awful."

Krista is then left with a major decision to make over whether she can still marry Leo after making such a big mistake.

Neighbours bosses aren't giving away whether the ceremony goes ahead or not, but with the Aussie soap celebrating its 40th anniversary in style, fans can look forward to a lavish location shoot either way.

Majella added: "I think Krista is just in shock. It's the day of the wedding, she's overwhelmed with emotion and she doesn't know what is the right thing to do. However, I think there are certain touchstones in her life who help her through ? and Paul is one of those people.

"It was gorgeous and so magical to film on location, with all of us being there together. Normally when we shoot weddings or big events, it's over the course of a couple of days. Because we were out on location for this, it was just one day. We all just focused and honed in on what we needed to film. It was such a great day."

The other big question of the week is whether Leo will ever find out about Krista sleeping with Seb. As with the outcome of the wedding, show bosses won't be confirming either way until the episodes air in March.

Sharing his thoughts, Tim told us: "Leo and Krista make a great couple, but Seb has put them to the test and I don't think Krista has been that considerate with how she's reacted.

"They're both really good people. They've been through so much to become the people they are, but now these villains are trying to manipulate them.

"If Leo finds out the truth, I think it'd just be absolutely heartbreaking after getting this far and tolerating so much. Krista has been quelling Leo's nerves and insecurities about Seb, then he finally went to accept Seb.

"But if someone treats you like that for so long, you have your suspicions and eventually you find out it's true, maybe you're done."

Neighbours airs its 40th anniversary celebrations in the week commencing Monday, March 17.

Neighbours releases new episodes from Mondays to Thursdays for free on Amazon Freevee and Prime Video in the UK and US. In Australia, the show airs from Mondays to Thursdays at 4pm on Channel 10, with a 6.30pm repeat screening on 10 Peach Comedy.

Hate this SL. KRISTA tries so hard to do the right thing and this just seems out of character. Hope she tells LEO the truth. Love LEO. I think LEO will forgive her, KEO will get married but KRISTA may end up pregnant and not know who the father is ..,

    EDIT: The DS article:

Neighbours teases mystery death and wedding drama in 40th anniversary trailer
A brand new trailer gives fans a first look at huge week of episodes.

    https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/nei...death-wedding/

    Neighbours spoilers follow.

Neighbours has teased further details of what fans can expect during the soap's dramatic 40th anniversary week, with a new trailer giving a glimpse at a mysterious death and some big wedding drama for Leo Tanaka and Krista Sinclair.

The soap's big anniversary week will kick off on Monday, March 17, with Leo and Krista's wedding being a centrepiece of the week.

The couple's big day doesn't get off to the best start when Krista wakes up beside Sebastian Metcalfe, thanks to her sister Fallon Morell lying that she has slept with Leo.

As Leo and the guests are seen waiting for Krista at their waterside ceremony, it appears that Krista could be having doubts following her night with Sebastian, as she says that "our entire marriage will be based on a lie".

Although she appears to be heading towards the ceremony in the clip, will she end up going ahead with the wedding?

The trailer also features the return of Chelsea Murphy, who greets Paul Robinson while holding her newborn baby. He immediately asks, "Is it mine?", but what will Chelsea say?

Meanwhile, Max Ramsay faces danger when he hears that dangerous Carter is returning to Melbourne, feeling sure that "he's coming for me". It isn't long before the garage is being set alight, with Max and his friends trapped inside.

We also see Lassiters Lake become a crime scene, as horrified Jane Harris spots a body floating in the water, while scheming Darcy Tyler also reappears in Erinsborough much to the shock of Karl and Susan Kennedy.

When Susan points out that he has moved in without telling them, Darcy claims that "it happened really quickly", but is there more to his story than he's letting on?

And with newcomer Agnes Adair (played by past Neighbours star Anne Charleston) coming face to face with a shocked Harold Bishop, it looks like there could be tension between the pair as Harold is stunned by her resemblance to his late wife Madge and claims that "you're dead".

Who won't make it out of the big anniversary week alive - and how will Ramsay Street's new mysteries play out?

Neighbours releases new episodes from Mondays to Thursdays for free on Amazon Freevee and Prime Video in the UK and US. In Australia, the show airs from Mondays to Thursdays at 4pm on Channel 10, with a 6.30pm repeat screening on 10 Peach Comedy.

Can’t just let two people be happy. I’m so tired of these cheating storylines. I get that it’s a “drama” but I should be on the writing team with the things I’ve come up with while guessing what happens. My ideas have been so much better than the rubbish they’ve given us. Too predictable and repetitive.

Neighbours boss shares exciting spoilers for 40th anniversary and show's final months
Get ready for a huge week.

    https://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/nei...y-show-finale/

    Neighbours spoilers follow.

With Neighbours turning 40 this week, we recently caught up with the show's top boss Jason Herbison for an exclusive preview of what's ahead.

The iconic Aussie soap is airing a huge set of episodes from today, featuring Leo and Krista's wedding drama, a dangerous fire at the garage, a shock death and the return of some familiar faces.

Of course, the celebrations are also bittersweet for fans, cast and crew, following the recent news that Neighbours will be ending again in December.

Here, Jason talks about this week's unmissable episodes and what's to come over the next few months.

How far in advance did you start planning the 40th anniversary episodes?

"I've been thinking about it ever since we announced the next chapter of the show, as of course I knew it would be coming up. The challenge was: 'How do we do something different to what we've done before?'

"The 30th and 35th anniversaries had a lot of nostalgia, as did the 2022 finale. I know viewers look forward to seeing past characters so I wanted to have an element of that, but I also wanted to look to the future as well."

Can you tell us how your plans developed?

"We landed on a simple theme of 'celebrating big soapie twists and turns' ? contemporary stories that have a nod to the past, in the sense that we have done similar things before. Pretty much everything in soap has been done before and the key is always trying to do things in a slightly different way.

"So with this anniversary week, we are shining a spotlight on it and celebrating the nature of classic, serial storytelling. Nell's 'Story of Erinsborough' exhibition is a device that links the past with the present. It's a little wink to the audience from us."

Leo and Krista are a big focal point of the week. There's a lot of uncertainty ahead for them, but do you see them as a strong couple?

"I think they have the potential to be a strong couple, absolutely. But like all soap characters and indeed people in real life, they both have past demons.

"Those demons come back to haunt them in this storyline. Krista's Achilles heel is her sobriety and anyone connected to that. Leo can be controlling and possessive ? he can't help it, he's a Robinson!"

The big location shoot for the wedding looks great ? how was it to film?

"It was certainly a huge day and director Harry Lloyd did an amazing job. They had a huge task wrangling many moving parts, not least Melbourne's weather.

"We looked at a few different locations before finally settling on the venue in Williamstown, which is on the west side of town. One of our biggest challenges was the sheer amount of story we had to try and get through across the block.

"We could've done more scenes at the wedding, but we needed to fly through it. Cast also had to come and go because we always have two units filming ? not everyone could be there all day."

The dramatic garage fire involving Byron, Sadie, Nicolette, Max and Roxy is another key plot?

"These scenes were directed by Eugenie Muggleton and she did an amazing job. I have to confess, my amazing producer Andrew Thompson really takes the running here. I'm a bit like you ? I was able to sit back in the screening and go 'wow'!"

Will that stunt sequence have longer-term repercussions? We know there's major drama for Byron, Sadie and Max?

"Definitely. That is always a priority for me when we do any story. If we're going to do something big then it must have consequences for the future."

Chelsea is back and claims to have changed her ways ? is she being genuine?

"Chelsea is trying to be a better person ? that's part of the reason she has stayed away so long. There are still some big twists ahead in the storyline. All is not what it seems."

Is Paul and Terese's relationship strong enough to withstand the drama caused by Chelsea's return?

"I think so. They are such an interesting couple. Most viewers seem to love them together, but I'm also aware that some of the audience prefer them apart.

"Stefan [Dennis, who plays Paul] and Rebekah [Elmaloglou, who plays Terese] have terrific chemistry and they've both been on the show a long time, so the challenge for us is to keep the dynamic fresh and interesting. We love to throw obstacles at them but there are harmonious times ahead as well."

Was Anne Charleston's return as a new character always planned, or was this story brought into the mix when Ian Smith (Harold Bishop) sadly had to leave the show?

"I always knew that Ian might only be able to do a year or so this time around, which is completely fair enough at his age. So it was in my mind to build to an exit story.

"I was a huge fan of Harold and Madge and I really wish she'd never been killed off, hence my habit of bringing her back in various incarnations. This is a different chapter, she's Agnes rather than Madge, which again is a nod to the times in the past when we've done stories like this.

"Ian's diagnosis meant that we needed to truncate the story as every week, he wasn't sure whether he'd be back to do the next. Fortunately, things are looking much better for him health-wise now."

Where does Agnes and Harold's story go from here?

"Agnes moves into Eirini Rising, which as you can imagine is quite confronting for Harold. Of course everyone is intrigued by her resemblance to Madge ? is it a coincidence or is there another explanation for it? JJ and Max become particularly intrigued by it all and set out to solve the mystery."

What's in store for Darcy Tyler once he's back?

"Darcy has been on our list of characters to bring back for many years. We've had a few different story ideas bubbling around but this is a new one.

"We will also be seeing another character from the past return, someone connected to a character Darcy never knew before. It becomes quite a big story from there.

"One thing I especially love is that it's a huge arc for Karl. You will see some amazing performances from Fletch as the weeks pass."

Wendy returns this week ? are there big plans for the ever-popular Rodwell family?

"Yoo hoo she's back! Yes, absolutely, we have very big plans for the Rodwell family. We've had a massive story on the board for quite a while that we had to push back a little. But its time has come and it's going to be huge."

In broader terms, can you tease what's coming up beyond the anniversary week?

"Anniversary week sets in motion several stories that will continue for months to come.

"Beyond that, we have another returning character, who we are very excited about. This person was a huge Neighbours name in the 1990s."

Was Lakota Johnson (Taye) the final new regular cast member, or will we be introduced to some new characters?

"There are more regular cast members to come. The end of the show did change some of our longer-term plans, however you will see some more new faces on the opening titles.

"You will also see the wonderful gang from Eirini Rising on the titles too ? including Vera, by popular demand!"

With the show wrapping up again this year, do you feel you have enough time to craft a fitting finale like last time? Do you have a bucket list of stories you want to get on screen before then?

"It's certainly a unique challenge, plotting another finale so soon after the last one. But it's also a privilege to continue to lead the show at this time.

"My goal is to make the final months of the show as fulfilling as possible and of course craft an ending that feels special and important in its own way. I won't compete with the last one ? it'll be different, but hopefully capture the same warm tone."

Some cast and crew seem resigned to this being the end of Neighbours, while others seem more optimistic. Do you hope fans keep fighting for the show and is there any hope?

"Absolutely, there is always hope. Neighbours isn't ending because we don't have an audience. It's the opposite ? we have an incredibly loyal audience. There are many more stories that can be told in the future and I hope to one day have the chance to tell them."
