Emmerdale's Sarah Sugden and Jacob Gallagher face some relationship hurdles next month.

The young villagers have been growing closer recently, but there's trouble ahead when Jacob's new friendships threaten to stand in their way.

Upcoming episodes see Jacob embark on work experience in A&E as part of his medical studies.

The high-pressure environment leaves Jacob feeling overwhelmed and stressed, as he starts to doubt his own abilities and whether he has what it takes.

Coming up in January, Jacob tries to hide his doubts as he socialises with his new medical student friends at The Woolpack.

Sarah heads over to join them, but she feels left out as she doesn't fit into the conversations.

Things only get worse when Jacob's friends realise that Sarah was admitted to A&E in a drunken state the week before.

The group gang up on Sarah, berating her for wasting valuable time and resources with her irresponsible behaviour. Jacob feels guilty as he watches the tensions unfold.

Later, Jacob apologises to Sarah for not supporting her more.

The pair seem to get back on track and they spend the night together, but will this be the start of something special or will they keep it as a one-off?

Emmerdale bosses have previously announced that Jacob's time in A&E will take centre stage in a special standalone episode next week.

The single-story edition of Emmerdale will explore the pressures of working with cases of serious injury and other life-threatening emergencies.

Joe-Warren Plant, who plays Jacob, recently said: "When I met with our producer Sophie [Roper], she told me about this hour-long episode dedicated to Jacob's first day of placement in A&E.

"I was hit with all these emotions. Knowing how many people have this high pressure job for real gave me the pressure to really knuckle down and get it right.

"Tackling this storyline scared me at first, but I feel honoured to know they trusted me enough to tell it. That means such a lot and I feel very honoured."

Emmerdale airs Sarah and Jacob's scenes on Wednesday, January 8 and Thursday, January 9 on ITV1 and ITVX.

Emmerdale's Marlon Dingle is targeted by online trolls as April Windsor's disappearance storyline continues in the New Year.

Marlon is left devastated as his efforts to raise awareness of April's situation lead to unwanted attention from strangers.

April went missing on Christmas Day after enduring a difficult few weeks. The month got off to a traumatic start when she was kidnapped by Ross Barton's enemy Jade and found out the real story behind the death of her mum Donna in 2014.

The teen had also fallen out with her family due to some rebellious behaviour, as she'd started drinking heavily and had even tried to buy cannabis. Viewers last saw her getting into a car after she'd already been missing for hours.

Coming up in January, Marlon's loved ones become concerned over the lack of leads in the April case. They convince Marlon to film an appeal video so that more people are looking out for April.

The decision pays off when Marlon's video goes viral, but Mary Goskirk is forced to protect him from a string of hateful messages which are flooding in.

When Marlon finds out what's going on, he regrets releasing the video without seeking official advice first. He considers deleting it to stop the trolling, but eventually decides that it's important to keep the clip live for April's sake.

Meanwhile, Marlon faces a separate drama when his wife Rhona struggles to forgive him for events which took place over Christmas and New Year.

Mary decides that Laurel Thomas is to blame for the tensions between Rhona and Marlon, so she steps in to confront Laurel at The Woolpack.

Marlon is left furious over Mary's interference and tries to warn her off.

Things are back on track between Laurel and Rhona, Marlon records an online appeal requesting help to find his missing daughter April. Jacob apologises to Sarah.

Thursday
When Marlon?s appeal goes live he faces a barrage of online hate and is left wondering if he should delete the video. Then Rhona steps in to support him. After spending a night together Sarah and Jacob have a big decision to make. Was it just a one off hookup or does their relationship have an actual future?

Emmerdale villain Anthony Fox confides in his son-in-law Caleb Miligan next week.

The evil character shares his prognosis with Caleb after receiving another update about his health.

In November, Anthony told his family that he'd been diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer.

His granddaughter Steph pledged to support him however she could, while Caleb also agreed to put their past differences aside.

Anthony's daughter Ruby remained unsettled by his presence in the village. The reasons why were subsequently explored in a flashback episode, which revealed that Anthony had sexually abused Ruby when she was a child.

Next week, Anthony shares some grim news with Caleb about his health.

Anthony is starting to prepare for the end, but he asks Caleb to keep quiet around Steph and Ruby.

Meanwhile, Ruby continues with her plan to arrange a DNA test to find out whether Steph's biological father is Caleb or Anthony.

Ruby confides in Chas about her decision, although she continues to tell only part of the story as she doesn't mention Anthony's guilt.

There's a difficult moment for Ruby when Caleb returns home from work early, just as she's gathering his DNA. She's relieved when she manages to navigate this close call.

Later in the week, Ruby tries to enjoy a spa day with Steph. The bonding experience brings them closer together, but tensions flare up again when Steph finds a photo from Ruby's pregnancy.

Ruby is triggered by the photo and responds badly, sparking more tensions between mother and daughter.

Anthony urges Steph to be patient with her mum, hinting that there are hidden complexities at play. Is it only a matter of time before Steph and Caleb discover the disturbing truth about what he's capable of?
