Coronation Street has finally confirmed plans for Carla Connor and DS Lisa Swain's friendship to take a romantic twist.
The pair's connection intensifies next month as a tender moment leaves Carla confused over how she feels.
Carla and Lisa have both leaned on each other for support over the past few months, leaving fans to wonder whether their growing bond could eventually lead to more.
Scenes airing in early October see Carla accept support and comfort from Lisa after another difficult time.
The day in question sees Carla face court on ABH charges after she recently knocked a young thug off his bike with her car door.
After getting through the court case, Carla is alarmed when the lad's father follows her back to Underworld and becomes threatening.
Lisa comes to Carla's rescue but when they have a heart-to-heart, Carla is visibly affected by a gentle touch from her friend.
Carla then questions her feelings, wondering what she has just experienced and whether Lisa felt it too.
Speaking about the upcoming scenes, Alison King ? who plays Carla ? explained: "As the day starts, we see her with a letter which has really rocked her.
"Later, she's been pushed to the edge and she's had to justify herself in the courtroom. Outside she's still making digs about the lad to Ryan when the dad appears and says: 'That's my son'.
"She snaps back, making out he deserved it, especially with a dad like him, which probably isn't a great move! She's in a really vulnerable state on that day. She's had this letter, there's a lot going on in her head and she just snaps. She?s trying to defend herself, although really she's got no defence whatsoever for what she did.
"She goes back to the factory, tells everybody to go home, then suddenly this lunatic appears, coming at her and really raising his voice in quite threatening behaviour.
"So she just goes into fight or flight and tries to flee but then Lisa appears and steps in, we hope just at the right time, but Carla's really shaken by it."
Elaborating on the mysterious letter Carla has received, Alison confirmed: "She goes home and she starts drinking. It transpires that the letter was her divorce from Peter coming through. She goes into a kind of morose, maudlin mode.
"It's just the end of a really, really bad day, and tough as she is, she's feeling very sorry for herself."
Shortly afterwards, Lisa returns to check on Carla following the earlier incident.
This leads to their moment of chemistry, opening up a new chapter of the storyline.
Alison explained: "I think Carla's still in shock and she's very much in the moment. There is a real friendship growing between them and the fact that Lisa's come around to check on her really means something to Carla. I think because she's taken Betsy on, there's a kind of kindred spirit forming.
"We've seen Lisa have a bad day and Carla being a shoulder to lean on. She's got a lot of understanding about how difficult Betsy is, she's just come out of a relationship herself so she understands some of the loss Lisa is feeling after Becky.
"It's been a long time since Carla has had a female friend, somebody who's actually leaning on her but is also a powerhouse in her own right. Now Lisa is there for her, she?s leaning on Lisa for the first time and it's becoming quite a confusing friendship.
"Lisa keeps appearing, she's always there because of that link through Betsy, and there's a bond growing between them that Carla can't quite define."
Alison continued: "I'm loving working with Vicky [Myers, who plays Lisa]. She's an absolute trooper and she's very talented. I'm enjoying seeing their friendship coming through. With this friendship, we're seeing a more vulnerable side in them both, rather than just two very strong women.
"It's nice to see Carla opening up to another woman, rather than it all being intermingled with men. She's suddenly got somebody around that really gets her.
"She has that closeness and banter with Ryan at home, but with Lisa she can show that vulnerability that she so often hides. Lisa's so serious but she quite likes it and she doesn't really know why, because in that sense they're polar opposite."
She added: "I think every step of this friendship is taking her by surprise. The closeness between them for Carla comes from concern, yet at times she can't really put her finger on what this is."
Coronation Street airs these scenes on Monday, October 7.
can anyone just be friends

Coronation Street star John Thomson has spoken about his unexpected return to the show for the first time.
The former Cold Feet actor is reprising his role as Jesse Chadwick, who was last seen on the ITV soap in 2010.
Last month, it was reported that Jesse was speedily written into scripts at the last minute after Martin Platt's comeback plot had to be scrapped.
Martin was due to return to the cobbles for Gail Rodwell's exit plot, with the pair tipped to reignite their relationship and go off into the sunset together. However, ITV announced that Sean Wilson ? who plays Martin ? stepped away from the show "for personal reasons" and none of his filmed scenes would air.
In a new interview, John has now confirmed that Jesse is heading back to Weatherfield to see Gail following the news of her granddaughter Bethany's botched cosmetic surgery procedure.
This marks a change from Jesse's last stint on the show where his main love interest was Eileen Grimshaw, Gail's long-time enemy.
John explained: "Jesse is not really prepared to see Eileen after things ended so badly between them. When Jesse left, he'd been spreading his bets over two sisters, which is slightly morally bankrupt to say the least.
"He's changed dramatically because he's very remorseful for that behaviour, so for him to think that Eileen would even contemplate having him back after he made a play for her sister is not on his radar.
"I don't think the new Jesse could possibly entertain that there would ever be anything with Eileen again because of his actions in the past."
He continued: "Jesse met Gail in Thailand. He's heard about Bethany and he's very worried. So on his travels he's returned via Weatherfield to check on Gail, because they've stayed in touch via email. He's heard all about Bethany and he's very concerned for Gail."
Asked what the Platts make of this, John laughed: "So two like him and two hate him! Shona and Nick are prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt, whereas David and Sarah are absolutely not ? it's just total mistrust from the start.
"There is the thinking that they need a decent man in their lives, but as soon as David lists all Gail's previous, it's no wonder that there is a mistrust because Gail's sense of judgement over men has been very poor.
"Really Shona and Nick are very generous in their offer to wipe the slate clean and see what Jesse might be like given Gail's history. Jesse's going to have to work really hard to get David and Sarah on his side and see he is just a friend who cares about Gail, because there's a real sense of mistrust about his motives."
He continued: "I was a bit shell shocked when I first came in because I?d forgotten the speed of the turnaround so it was an absolute baptism of fire. But everyone in the Platts has made me feel so welcome. I just feel secure and proper looked after.
"Helen [Worth, who plays Gail] and I are absolutely thrilled to be working together, everyone's good company and there's always fun to be had on set with the Platts, which is great.
"It was a bit like crank handle starting a car after all these years but the laughs have got us through. Ben [Price, who plays Nick] said to me: 'You do know we're all always word perfect, don't you?' I thought 'Oh no' but thank God he was winding me up.
"My ability to learn lines at speed is getting better and better again so it's not as daunting as it was. And I'm sharing a dressing room with Joe [Duttine, who plays Tim] which is great, he's a really good guy, we get on really well and we're both the same ? juggling childcare and getting on with the job."
Coronation Street airs Jesse's return scenes on Wednesday, October 9.
Gail's exit and romance all rushed, did she even need a man as her reason to leave

Gail has been missing so much, they could use she is upstairs as to explain her absence LOL

I have to say I only vaguely remember Jesse Chadwick. The retconned story that he and Gail have met up and kept in touch over the years I find a bit unbelievable as he hasn't ever been mentioned since he left. The whole storyline a poor send off for Gail after 50 years. It's a shame what happened with Sean Wilson but that storyline would at least have had a smidgin of credibility to it...
As lizann says, why does Gail's exit story HAVE to be about a man?
