Casualty has confirmed there will be a new nurse doing the rounds.

The long-running medical drama has been on a three-month break ? making way for seasonal shows like Strictly Come Dancing (which featured the show's Nigel Harman) ? but is back on Saturday, December 30 at 9.15pm.

Adesuwa Oni, who starred in Netflix?s African Queens: Njinga, has joined the cast as Ngozi, an Emergency Department nurse who has recently moved to the UK from Nigeria.

On Instagram the show welcomed Oni to the cast, sharing her promo photo and writing: "Welcome to #Casualty, @theadesuwaoni Meet the E.D?s newest recruit, Ngozi."

Melanie Hill (Coronation Street's Cathy Matthews) is another new addition, playing clinical nurse manager Siobhan Mackenzie, described as a "no-nonsense team leader who looks set to ruffle a few feathers".

A synopsis for the upcoming episode reads: "It?s a new frontier as the team cracks down on violence in Holby City ED after one of their own is attacked. Stevie (Elinor Lawless) and Charlie (Derek Thompson) lead the charge on enforcing zero-tolerance measures.

"But as Stevie begins to buckle under the pressure of keeping her colleagues safe, the team may be in more danger than ever before."

The episode also follows Max (Nigel Harman) and his continuing struggle with kidney failure as he grapples with the decision to accept help from daughter Jodie (Anna Chell).

The episode will be among the last of producer Jon Sen, who announced in October he would be stepping down from his role at the end of the year.

Speaking to Radio Times about his final episodes, Sen said: "So my final episodes will go out in 2024 and we come back on towards the end of the year with a really exciting storyline, which involves Stevie grappling with the PTSD she feels from her upbringing and that dovetails perfectly with an ongoing issue with the hospital.

"So it's a really exciting story that we're telling over the next, kind of, three months and that comes back towards the end of the year."
