H&A future backed by Aust Network

    DS article:

Home and Away future backed by Australian network following Neighbours axe
"It's arguably our most important show."

Home and Away has been publicly backed by its Australian network, following the sad announcement that Neighbours will be coming to an end.

Channel 7's director of content scheduling Brook Hall pledged its ongoing commitment to the Summer Bay soap in a recent interview with TV Tonight, suggesting that the show is going nowhere anytime soon.

"I know it's not a sexy thing to say, but Home and Away is our main drama that we run pretty much all year," he said.

"It's an expensive drama, a high-quality one. It runs on our main channel in primetime. It's not something that we use on the multi to get drama points. It is our most expensive outlay of content. And that gets lost.

"There's no other network that would have as big a price tag on a show. It's our biggest production of the year."

Networks in Australia need to meet quotas by commissioning a certain amount of drama, documentary and children's content. But Hall repeated that their backing for the Summer Bay soap wasn't about hitting targets.

"I'm very proud of Home and Away, and it's arguably our most important show and our biggest cash outlay," he said. "We don't have to do it. We believe in it.

"We don't do it because it's a drama quota. We do it because it's an amazingly successful show."

Channel 5 airs Home and Away in the UK. Unlike with Neighbours, the channel has a life-of-series contract, meaning it will continue to broadcast the show for as long as Australia produces episodes.

Neighbours is already lining up a number of returning characters to see the show off after its 37-year run, including Lucy Robinson, Shane Ramsay and Harold Bishop.

Home and Away airs weekdays at 1.15pm on Channel 5 and 6pm on 5STAR (UK) and Mondays to Thursdays at 7pm on Channel 7 (Australia). Selected classic episodes are available via Amazon Prime Video in the UK.

Home and Away gets new Channel 5 timeslot after Neighbours axe
    New schedules have been revealed.

    Home and Away spoilers follow.

Home and Away is changing timeslots on Channel 5 once Neighbours finishes for good.

The long-running Summer Bay soap has aired in a 1.15pm slot for several years, but it's on the move once the final episode of Neighbours has screened.

Final schedules have been released today (July 20) for the first week of August, when Neighbours is no more.

Channel 5 has confirmed that Home and Away will shift to 1.45pm, the slot that used to be occupied by Neighbours.

The evening repeat of Home and Away will remain on 5STAR at 6pm. Some fans had wondered whether it would move back into a 6pm slot on Channel 5 now Neighbours' absence leaves a slot free, but this doesn't appear to be on the cards.

The first-look screening follows at 6.30pm on 5STAR as usual.

Greg Barnett, who oversees Home and Away for Channel 5, recently spoke exclusively to Digital Spy about future plans for the soap once Neighbours ends.

He told us: "Someone is going to get shot, and a couple of new faces are about to arrive in the Bay, some of whom will have residents and viewers on tenterhooks in terms of their true intentions.

"There are massive storylines set to roll out later this year which will involve some of our most beloved characters, including Marilyn.

"I can't say more than that, but there'll be plenty of teasers and clips on the UK Home and Away Facebook page as we head towards the show's 35th anniversary next year and of course we'll be continuing to support with promos and cast visits. Exciting times."

Home and Away currently airs weekdays at 1.15pm on Channel 5 and 6pm on 5STAR. First-look screenings air at 6.30pm on 5STAR and the show also streams on My5.
