Coronation Street is set to introduce a new character in the Fiz Stape and Phill romance storyline ? his mother.

The pair have been dating for a number of months now following Fiz's split from Tyrone Dobbs, the latter storyline causing plenty of drama on the cobbles this year.

However, star Jennie McAlpine has teased where her relationship with Phill will go, revealing she will meet his mother? which doesn't prove to be an easy feat.

"Phill seems like a great character, but we are going to meet his mother ? and her dog!" the actress revealed to Inside Soap.

"She offers Fiz lunch but says, 'You can't have a slice of chicken because that's for the dog'. This is the kind of thing Fiz is up against!"

Fiz's relationship with Phill has unsurprisingly caused tension with Tyrone, whose relationship with Alina Pop ended last month after he confessed he still had feelings for Fiz.

At one point recently, Tyrone even accused Phill of cheating on Fiz after discovering a napkin with a mysterious woman's number on it in Phill's car.

After airing his accusations, Tyrone realised he had put his foot in it when it turned out the number was actually for a chef to cook a romantic dinner for Phill and Fiz.

Meanwhile, in her latest interview, Jennie reflected on the Fiz and Tyrone split storyline, admitting she had initial worries over not working with co-star Alan Halsall as much.

"The thing that upset me the most in the beginning was the thought that I wasn't going to work with Alan anymore.

"It's like putting on your cosy slippers, and when you think of the history? Fiz and Tyrone have known each other for 20 years ? which is ridiculous! [laughs].

"There were moments where Alan would nod to Jack [Duckworth]'s picture on the mantelpiece, knowing how much he would disapprove!"

Coronation Street's Fiz Stape will continue to face hurdles in her relationship with Phill Whittaker as Christmas approaches, as the arrival of his mum, Mimi, awakens fresh tensions.

Fiz ? and viewers ? will first meet Mimi in episodes airing on Friday (December 3) when she visits Phill (Jamie Kenna) and Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) for tea. She immediately rubs Fiz up the wrong way, who is annoyed at Phill for not warning her how posh and particular Mimi is.

Fiz is annoyed when Mimi decides that she wants to organise a big birthday party for Phill and, the following week, she feels further put out when she encounters Phill and Mimi drawing up plans for the celebration.

Fiz tries to put a brave face on things but is horrified when Mimi unveils some party dresses that she's ordered for Fiz and the girls ? which Fiz thinks are hideous.

Feeling unsupported by Phill as his mum presides over the party plans, Fiz heads to the Christmas market to drown her sorrows, where her ex Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) finds her.

To cheer her up, Tyrone reveals to Fiz that Phill has actually booked a surprise Christmas holiday for her and the girls, and Fiz is delighted.

When she heads back home, Fiz comes clean to Phill and makes her feelings about Mimi very clear ? but how will he react to her revelations?

Later in the week, the day of the party arrives and Fiz manages to get through the event. But when Mimi reveals that her special gift to Phill is that she's moving to Weatherfield, Fiz's heart sinks at the prospect of Mimi being around more often.

Tyrone notices Fiz's discomfort at the party and so he drags Mimi into the kitchen, where he delivers some major home truths about her behaviour. He claims that Phill is the luckiest man alive to be with Fiz, highlighting how special she is.

But when the pair head back into the party, Mimi is mortified to realise that she has left her microphone turned on. How much of Tyrone's outburst have the party guests ? including Fiz and Phill ? heard?
