Such a rubbish, feeble excuse by BBC. I can think of a few other programmes that should go before Holby. I know it's not the same as it used to be since they cut it down to only 40 mins per episode but I put that down to filming while having to abide by covid rules. Bring in some new writers and bring back Jac and some of the others such as Michael Spence, Elliot, Frieda etc

Holby City was axed to allow for more dramas based outside of the south of England to be made, the BBC's drama boss has reiterated.

Back in June of this year, the broadcaster devastated loyal viewers when it announced that the show, which began in 1999 as a spin-off to Casualty, was going to conclude in March 2022, having been on air for more than two decades.

"It was an incredibly difficult decision," Piers Wenger, the controller of BBC drama commissioning, recently recalled to Digital Spy and other press.

"But you know, when [Director-General of the BBC] Tim Davie gave us some very clear direction on wanting to make more drama across the UK, and we knew we had EastEnders, Holby and Casualty ? all of which are based in the South, albeit Casualty in Wales ? we knew we needed to better reflect life across the whole of England, which is why we've chosen to bring back Waterloo Road."

During the interview, Wenger was also asked outright whether the impassioned reaction to its cancellation might inspire a change of heart, but he seemingly chose not to answer that part of the question ? which, unfortunately for fans, suggests not.

In its original statement confirming that Holby City would be coming to an end next year, the BBC said: "We are so very grateful to all of Holby's wonderful cast, crew, writers, producers ? and to our millions of loyal viewers and fans for being part of our show.

"This tough decision reflects the BBC's commitment to make more programmes across the UK and to better reflect, represent and serve all parts of the country.

"We promise that Holby will get the send-off it deserves. Thank you for your continued support and love for the series."

Holby City is on borrowed time these days, following the sad news that the show will be flatlining in February 2022.

The cast and crew will wrap up filming for good in the next few months, but there's no need to be commiserating just yet as there's plenty in store before it's swansong.

Holby will be ramping up the drama through the winter months in a bid to ensure the much-loved medical drama goes out on a high. Here's a handful of the storylines to be keeping an eye on:

    1. Josh's bulimia

Holby City recently confirmed a bulimia story for Josh, who is struggling to cope with the drastic change that the premature birth of his twins has brought to his life.

As Josh continues to spiral, Eli is eager to support him but struggles with the burden of keeping it to himself.

At a loss over what to do, Eli demands that Josh seeks medical support from his GP, insisting that he will tell Ange everything if he doesn't.

Fans will have to wait and see what happens next, but Holby's recent autumn trailer showed another danger awaiting Josh as he gets run over by a car...

    2. Ange makes a big decision

Ange will be back at work at the start of next month, but she'll soon wonder whether she's made the right decision after all.

As Ange struggles with finding the balance of her work-home life, she will miss all the mounting signs that all is not as it seems with her partner Josh.

Recognising that something has to give, Ange makes a big decision about her future ? but could it leave Josh under more pressure than ever?

    3. Jac's fate revealed

Jac has been mostly suffering in silence over her diagnosis since returning to Holby over the summer, but upcoming scenes will reveal that she isn't coping as well as she wants everyone to believe.

As she prepares to take part in the game-changing stent trial, Jac will be overcome with anxiety when she hears that one of the other candidates didn't make it.

Because of this, Eli's wife Amelia has been allocated a place on the trial instead, but Jac struggles with the enormity of the risk she's taking and begins to reconsider whether it's right for her after all. What will she do?

    4. Jeong's sad struggle

Jeong also has a new struggle ahead as he starts to feel increasingly isolated among his colleagues.

Jeong feels like he's treading water while the lives of his friends rush on and no one seem to have time for him.

When Jeong officially becomes an F2 doctor, he faces further heartbreak when no one seems interested in celebrating with him. Is a lonely Jeong falling through the cracks?

    5. Sacha's new venture

Sacha is feeling buoyed up this autumn, after unveiling his grand idea for 'War of the Wards'. Sacha wants to rally the troops to brainstorm poster ideas, until Kylie suggests that he be the face of the campaign.

Sacha certainly doesn't need telling twice and is soon powering on with his plans to make the hospital more environmentally friendly.

Team Keller are keen to rise to the hospital's Eco Challenge, but with Jeong side-lined and Max and Kylie at loggerheads over Lucky, will they be able to focus on the task at hand?

    6. Ollie's big secret

Ollie's return to Holby was never going to be without complications, but as you're about to find out, he may not have been entirely truthful about his circumstances for his comeback.

When Ross's 16-year-old daughter is rushed to theatre, Ollie is keen to step up but is clearly not up to the task and cracks under the pressure.

As Ollie battles with his deep-seated fears, it becomes clear that he's hiding a very dark secret. And when a blast from Ollie's shady past turns up on AAU, fans will be left in no doubt that all as it not as it seems here.

    7. Eli and Amelia's devastating decision

Holby will be continuing to delve into Eli's backstory over the next few months, as he faces his biggest challenge to date.

Eli's wife Amelia will be returning to our screens in the coming weeks, but receives devastating news that will change their lives forever.

Shortly after learning that she is finally pregnant, Amelia is hit by the tragic discovery that her brain tumour has returned. Amelia is hopeful that Eli's groundbreaking stent trial is the answer to her prayers, but they stumble upon a further hurdle when they learn that she can't take place if she continues with the pregnancy.

While Eli urges Amelia to prioritise her own life, clips from the show's new trailer show her adamant that she won't give up their chance to have a baby. What does the future hold for the couple?

    8. Carole's final days

The day Dom has been dreading will arrive over the winter months, when Carole begins to drastically deteriorate.

The new trailer shows Dom spending some precious time with his beloved mum, who no longer remembers his name.

Viewers saw Carole be diagnosed with rapidly progressing dementia back in the summer, and Digital Spy understands that the story will be taking her out of the show.

    9. Max and Kylie's feud

As we've already revealed, Kylie's new relationship with Louis could come under threat when she gets on the wrong side of his mum Max.

Kylie bears the brunt of Max's emotions when she fails to realise that Lucky is planning to take her own life, and thus lying about the medication she's received.

The pair's feud will run into next month, as Max fails to apologise for her harsh words. It's not long before Louis realises that something is amiss here, but will they be able to put their differences aside? Or will Louis find himself having to make a difficult decision?

Holby City airs on Tuesdays on BBC One.
