Tonight's Holby City episode (July 21) saw two returns (including one from the dead), some difficult decisions and the start of a potential new romance.

But what next for Essie? Are Kian and Jac back on track? And has Ric triumphed in his Guy vendetta? Here are the biggest questions we've been left with until next week...

    1. What now for Essie?

Tonight's rather unconventional scenes actually marked a major turning point in Essie's sad story, with Raf's visit from beyond the grave set to have a lasting impact on the nurse.

Joe McFadden reprised his role as Essie's late husband Raf for Tuesday's special episode, which saw her struggling to accept her devastating diagnosis.

Raf, who was killed off in a shocking story back in 2017, appeared as a figment of Essie's imagination, to encourage her to react to her tragic prognosis with love rather than anger.

    2. What happened to Raf and what was the relevance of his return?

Having discovered that her cancer is now terminal, Essie has understandably been angry with the world, but the reminder of Raf could be set to change that.

If we cast our minds back to 2017, fans will remember that Raf told Essie to react to his death with love not anger, in a heart-wrenching final message after being shot by Hanssen's son Fredrik.

The powerful reminder of Raf's final words motivated Essie to make the most of the time she has left tonight, sparking the next major chapter in her story. And this one could be even more tear-jerking.

    3. Will we see Raf again?

Raf's return was only ever meant to be a brief one, but he did say to Essie that he would always be there if she needed him.

Digital Spy understands that Joe only returned for one episode, but with the final chapter of Essie's story set to play out over the coming months, only time will tell if Raf will be making another ghostly comeback...

    4. Will Sacha accept Essie's fate?

Poor Sacha has been suffering in silence with his grief over Essie's tragic prognosis, desperately trying to find an innovative cure.

With Raf's words ringing in her ear, Essie decided to tackle her illness head on tonight – bravely telling her colleagues that she was now only having palliative treatment.

Upcoming scenes will see Essie put further steps in place for the end of her life, devastating her struggling partner Sacha further. But will Sacha accept her decision? Or will he continue to urge her to fight? As it happens, these very questions will be brought to the forefront in next week's episode. And the answers could surprise you...

    5. Will Guy be back?

Guy was sent packing by his conflicted ex-partner Max tonight, when she was forced to suspend him over Ric's allegations.

Convinced that Guy had fallen off the wagon, Ric launched a one-man mission to get his nemesis and even aroused the suspicions of Max.

Although Guy profusely denied drinking on shift, or beforehand, a later incident urged Max to take drastic action.

Despite his suspension, Guy's return stint is set to run for approximately 12 episodes, suggesting that we haven't seen the last of him yet.

Sure enough, Guy will be back to face the music at the start of next month, but what will happen at his disciplinary hearing?

    6. Has Ric made everything worse?

Guy may have been sober tonight, but there is a chance he won't be when he returns. Having lost his battle with Ric, Guy was seen heading out of the hospital – armed with a bottle of whiskey that he'd been given by a patient.

This appeared to suggest that Guy could be about to slip back into worrying old habits in his time away from work, but will this give Ric even more ammunition to get rid of him?

    7. Romance for Nicky and Louis?

Nicky's had the year from hell but there were some telltale signs tonight that happier times could be around the corner tonight.

As Nicky attempted to rebuild her life in the wake of her heart attack, she was given food for thought when a patient pointed out her palpable spark with newcomer Louis.

Although Nicky was quick to brush this off, Louis's feelings for her appeared to be confirmed when he attempted to ask her out on a date later on, only to be left frustrated by her response.

Louis shouldn't be deterred, though, as all know that the course of true love never ran smooth – especially in Holby. But are his feelings requited?

    8. Will Jac give Kian another chance?

Jac gave Kian a cold (but unsurprising) greeting when he returned to work last night, but her frosty resolve didn't last for long.

After saving Kian's life following his terrifying showdown with Phoenix, Jac vowed to help Kian get his life back on track and made him a surprising offer.

Aware of Kian's past dependency on painkillers, Jac insisted that he move in with her to recuperate, but is she ready to forgive and forget?

Holby City continues on Tuesday, July 28 at 8pm on BBC One.
