Coronation Street has confirmed emotional scenes for Ed Bailey in the build-up to Christmas.
The ITV show has started exploring Ed's gambling problem in recent weeks, as he has fallen back into his old ways with some risky bets.
Corrie's new storyline will intensify over the next few months, coinciding with the arrival of Ed's father Sarge.
Last month, it was revealed that former Desmond's actor Ram John Holder had been cast as Sarge, who'll be joining for a substantial guest stint.
Speaking to Digital Spy and other media in a recent press call, Coronation Street's producer Iain MacLeod explained: "Ed's gambling so far is something that's existed in backstory. We've seen him tempted a couple of times, but we thought there was a huge unexplored storyline there for us.
"The addition of the dad was an effort to try and contextualise what's made Ed the way he is. Addictions come from somewhere normally, so we thought: 'What is it about the family's shared history and home environment that might have caused Ed to have this vulnerability in his personality?'
"So here comes the dad to help us fill that out. He is also a massive dose of good fun across the episodes where he arrives. He's an incorrigible cheeky banter-filled pain in the neck really, depending on your perspective!
"Him and Ronnie are like two peas in a pod, whereas the same behaviour rubs Ed up the wrong way. We'll start to understand, via that, what might have driven Ed in this direction."
Revealing how the plot plays out in the build-up to Christmas, MacLeod continued: "On the surface it's very fun with the addition of the dad, but underneath it all, Ed's problems are spiralling and mounting.
"It culminates in Ed hitting rock bottom shortly before Christmas. In an effort to keep the wolves from the door, he's forced to do something extremely upsetting and commit a really awful betrayal.
"Ed will feel like he's let himself down in the worst conceivable way. I think the viewers will find it very sad. This man has been driven to a point of desperation, but it's very nuanced and very multi layered.
"Inevitably it stays a secret for a time, but then there's an explosive storyline that deals with the family discovering what it is that Ed has done. He's cast out into the wilderness and then there's a loyalty battle between the children as to which of them is going to be sticking by their dad and which one's going to cut him adrift.
"The story has really fantastic performances in the middle of it. It just feels like a really strong ensemble piece running all the way to the New Year."

Ed Bailey will consider committing identity fraud in new Coronation Street scenes.
As part of the soap revisiting Ed's gambling addiction, it will reference the iconic character Norris Cole, who lived at No.3 before the Baileys. Viewers will remember Norris was killed off a few years back.
In upcoming scenes, Ed finds a letter addressed to Norris that had been sent through the post to the Baileys at No.3.
Ed's mind starts to whirl when he opens the letter to find a pre-authorized credit card. Once he secretly pockets the card, Ed heads to the casino, intent on using the late Norris's credit card.
Viewers will have to wait to see whether or not Ed can go through with his plan to use the dead man's credit card to make some quick cash.
These upsetting scenes will set the stage for a major Christmas story where producer Iain McLeod has confirmed Ed will hit rock bottom.
Ed's gambling struggles will lead to the arrival of his father, Sarge, who'll be played by former Desmond's actor Ram John Holder in a substantial guest stint.
"Ed's gambling so far is something that's existed in backstory. We've seen him tempted a couple of times, but we thought there was a huge unexplored storyline there for us," MacLeod said.
"The addition of the dad was an effort to try and contextualise what's made Ed the way he is. Addictions come from somewhere normally, so we thought: 'What is it about the family's shared history and home environment that might have caused Ed to have this vulnerability in his personality?'"

Coronation Street star Trevor Michael Georges has reflected on Ed Bailey's ongoing gambling storyline.
Recent scenes have seen Ed's gambling addiction revisited, with the character set to hit rock bottom next month due to his issues, as well as considering identity fraud after obtaining a credit card sent to the deceased Norris Cole.
Explaining his character's history with gambling issues, Georges revealed the consequences that Ed's addiction previously had on the Bailey family continue to hang over his character.
"The Baileys came to Coronation Street due to Ed bringing his whole family into crisis and almost lost everything due to his gambling addiction," he said.
He continued: "When they moved to Corrie, they took everything that they had left and you can actually see that the furniture barely fits into their current house due to the size difference. This is a constant reminder to Ed that he used to be someone else... I don't think that guilt will ever leave him.
"I feel this really emphasises the tragedy behind Ed getting sucked back into gambling because he truly thought he had conquered it."
Ed's gambling issues have already seen his family impacted by his actions, with son Michael Bailey wrongly accused of committing fraud after Ed's winnings were discovered in his work bag last month.
Touching on upcoming scenes between Ed and his son, which see Ed's actions exposed after a letter from the bank freezing Norris' credit card is discovered by Michael, Georges added that Ed's addiction has turned him into a "professional liar".
"A professional liar at this point is definitely the right term," he added. "I think with gamblers and most addicts, they are not aware of how brilliant an actor they are.
"Improvising on the spot isn't something that most people can do easily... Whereas addicts are great at covering all of their sources and can think a way round of everything."
