Former EastEnders star Michael French has been tipped to make a return to the soap.![]()
The actor's character David Wicks will arrive back in Walford in mid-September, according to The Mirror today (May 8).
While show bosses have yet to confirm the rumours, insiders suggest that French has already agreed terms for his return in discussions with producers.
An EastEnders source told the newspaper: "Michael's return to the soap is a huge coup for the BBC, and viewers will see his character back to his charming, cunning best. He has also been assured of a couple of major forthcoming storylines.
"He's a bit older, but David still sees himself as a womaniser and is sure to break a few hearts third time around."
EastEnders fans last saw David for a short stint in January 2012, when he returned to Albert Square to say goodbye to his mother Pat (Pam St Clement) before she died.
David reignited his relationship with Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson) during his stay in Walford, but later made the heartbreaking decision to leave without her following threats from her brother Derek.
Since then, David has been mentioned in other scripts as he wrote to Carol late last year. As the letter was intercepted by Derek, Carol only discovered it after her meddling sibling had passed away.
French's original stint in EastEnders ran between 1993 and 1996. He is also known for his role as Nick Jordan on Casualty, but left the BBC medical drama at the beginning of the year.
EastEnders star Nitin Ganatra has admitted that his on-screen romance might run into trouble if David Wicks returns to Walford.
The actor's character Masood Ahmed is currently dating Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson) following the departure of his long-term partner Zainab.
Whether the couple last the distance remains to be seen, as tabloid reports have recently tipped Michael French to reprise his role as Carol's old flame David.
Speaking to PA about David's rumoured return, Ganatra confessed: "I don't think Masood can compete."
However, he added: "Masood's glass is half full. He's just gone from a 30-year relationship, to a 24-year-old girl, to a 54-year-old woman - there's nothing to complain about.
"Lindsey and I have fun, and we get along really well, so that's really nice. We giggle a lot."
EastEnders bosses have so far declined to comment on reports of David's return, but insiders suggest that he could be back on screen in September.
I can't see Michael French returning again to be honest, though I may be wrong. I'm not sure why but I feel the situation is similar to Ross Kemp/Grant Mitchell, with returns only being temporary. I hope he does return though, in a bit of a Den could return because Dalton was dead, David could return because Derek has. Without Derek I think David and Carol could go the distance.

The actor has agreed to reprise his role as David Wicks, who will be back on screen later this year.
Little is known about why David heads back to Albert Square, but show chiefs are promising that he will cause a stir for the other Walford residents.
EastEnders' executive producer Lorraine Newman commented: "It's an absolute honour to have Michael back in the show. Michael created an iconic character in David and with such rich history - with Ian, Bianca and of course Carol - there's plenty to explore in the future."
Rumours of a return for David first emerged in May this year, but producers kept tight-lipped over their plans until today.
