Sue Nicholls (Audrey Roberts, Corrie) DS Interview

Coronation Street legend Sue Nicholls rightly returns to the fore of the ITV soap over the coming weeks and months as her screen daughter is imprisoned on suspicion of murder, before taking her character Audrey's relationship with Lewis to the next level. Concerned that Gail's withholding information about Joe's death, Audrey visits Gail in prison with David but rather than allay her fears of a long stretch behind bars, she inadvertently gives the impression that she believes she's guilty. Here, we chat to Sue about Audrey's involvement in Gail's story and her three decades on the show.

You've been with Corrie for nearly 30 years now - can you believe you're still there?
"No I can't! It's jolly nice, too - it's the best job to have, especially in this day and age when there are no jobs anyway. Everybody wants to be in it so it must have something going for it! I've been so lucky and if I think back over the years all the people have been lovely and the stories have been hot. Being with Amanda Barrie was lovely, and of course Brian Mosley who sadly died - and it's thanks to Brian or whoever - if they hadn't married Audrey off to Alf, who knows I might just have been another tart with a heart passing through."

And Audrey doesn't even live on the Street...
"I'm Grassmere Drive, love! A lovely big detached and there's plenty of room - there's always a bed for you there, Kris! I love having the salon and of course I have the family there but I do love my salon. I know I only have about two old age pensioners a week - how I pay the rates I don't know - but I love that because I love the girls that work there and Jack (David Platt) of course. And I have my family - or I had the family - down the road in the Street so it's lucky for me - I've got lots of storylines going."

Does Audrey believe that Gail's innocent in Joe's death?
"Yes she does. She doesn't believe in any way that she killed him but what she does feel is that the whole story hasn't come out. The death happened in some way that Gail knows about. There's a bit of the story that hasn't been told and she feels Gail knows but isn't saying. That's where the confrontation in the waiting room stems from. Never, even when I was doing the scene, did I think she was saying, 'Did you kill him?' I think she said, 'There's something wrong - there's a jigsaw piece missing'. I think what she was implying was, 'Did he hit you? Did he attack you and fall over and hit his head?' which is vaguely what happened, but of course Gail thinks she's saying, 'You killed him!' - she wasn't at all but it does come out like that. My big mouth again! [After that] I'm banished from the prison and off I go. Then other things overcome it in the story and I think it happens with Lewis and Nick. I'm sad because it wasn't what I meant at all and I can't go back. David is right off me and blames me for upsetting his mother."

How does David react to Audrey's suspicions? At the first sign of weakness he attacks...
"Yes, he does. To be honest I can't remember. I know that he blames me and I think Nick as well. There's a bit of a to-do there. It did upset Audrey and David, suddenly his mother's little helper here and almost grown up in many respects. He goes right against his gran which doesn't help matters because she does care from him. She was the only one to understand him in the past and has given him second chances. The only time I would have hit my daughter was when she always gave in to David and said he couldn't help it - of course he could help it! But that's a good story, isn't it?"

Are you surprised at his reaction, considering Audrey's almost always stood by him?
"Yes, that's certainly not the David we know. He came in and said, 'What have you done to mother?' In the story we don't know how much David was involved. We didn't know they'd both got this story going until it's all come out. That's why it's all a bit dubious in Audrey's head because up until when Gail blurted out to the police that she was on the boat, Audrey and Nick didn't know that. They'd been given the story that he's gone off to do work somewhere. That's why they now doubt it - the story, to begin with, was total fabrication so what's the real story? They're within their rights to try and get to the bottom of it. He banished me from the family but it all works out in the end!"

You and Jack work so well together...
"I do love him - he's a splendid actor and I do love having scenes with him. I hope he does with me. We do laugh a lot despite everything. I'm always saying, 'Oh, David!' a bit like Posh Spice! I like the relationship we have. I have met people who have a better relationship with grandparents, in a funny way. I know that sounds a bit strange but sometimes people who are difficult have more of a contact with another generation. David and Gail have never really connected until now."

What was your reaction when you found out David was going to start supporting his mother?
"Well, I'm still a bit stunned both as Audrey and as Sue Nicholls. It's a good swap-around. Nobody would have thought of it. I'm surprised both as a viewer and his grandma."

Corrie's Audrey on Gail and the Street's men

Last week, I managed to catch up with one of my all-time favourite Coronation Street stars Sue Nicholls - and what a lovely lady she is.

On first hearing, you wouldn't think you were talking to Audrey Roberts from that there Coronation Street but her humorous and at-times flirty character soon begins to shine.

If you haven't read the first part of my interview, then have a butchers at this page here. Otherwise, read on for more about Audrey's to-the-point character, her men over the years and why Gail's been so unlucky in love.

How do you think Audrey gets away with being so straight-talking?
"I don't know, I never think of it like that. I think she just says it but she's saying it for their own good - like to Gail, 'The man's a waster' - of course she's been proved right as always! She does get away with a lot but it's just because it's her family. Do you know, I think I'm probably more outspoken now I'm the age I am than I was. I'm very grateful to the scriptwriters for giving me wonderful stuff and the stories that I've been part of - I don't know who thinks up the stories - but they've come up with some humdingers, haven't they?! Maybe I should hush my mouth a bit!

"I think she's doing it as a protection - I think back to my mother and she wasn't as bad as Audrey but she said what she felt but she was doing it so I didn't make a mess of my life."

Why do you think Gail's been so unlucky with men?
"Just a bad picker, love! I think with Gail she loses her heart easily and hasn't got to know the men very well. The minute they want to move in and drag her off the bed, that's enough for Gail! You think, 'Oh dear, perhaps you should try it out for a bit first', but no. Audrey in the early days, when she first came in she was a terrible flighty beast and laid her head with whoever bought her a G&T! I can hardly believe it but she did. She calmed down with Alf and that was lovely - a new side of her - but underneath she always had that.

"I remember a storyline where she thought the mayoral chauffeur fancied her - that was brought back to my mind recently when I had it in a speech to Lewis - 'Of course, the chauffeur was mad about me!' What a conceit but it did make me laugh, he really loved me, that chauffeur. Now I've got Lewis I don't know where to turn!"

Why does Gail never listen to Audrey?
"I think she thinks in many respects that the relationship is about turned. Sometimes Audrey's still a bit like the child and Gail is more sensible. Audrey's calmed down in later years which I like and really cares about the family like a lot of people do - mainly because she was the worst mother out and left all her children to raise themselves. She doesn't realise she's doing that, though. Gail obviously must have taken after the dad, Ted. I don't think she's got Audrey's genes. She's more sensible, isn't she? Mind you, I know what's coming up with Audrey and Lewis.

"Gail's always looking for true love and romance on the horizon, it's not wham-bam-thank-you like Audrey did and probably would still do given half the chance!"

    Gail's so mild mannered...
"Gail can come out with it when she wants to but she doesn't find it easy. The only good thing about Audrey is she tells David where to get off and I like that."

Sue Nicholls (Audrey Roberts, Corrie) DS Interview

Coronation Street salon owner Audrey Roberts - played by the estimable Sue Nicholls - finally finds love again in the form of Lewis Archer (Nigel Havers), despite the fact she knows he's an escort. As Audrey prepares to confide her true feelings towards him, she soon discovers his little black book containing information about all his clients. Downbeat to realise that she's just another punter, Audrey tries to give him the cold shoulder. However, when he, too, admits that he's developed feelings for her, Audrey's taken aback when he kisses her. It takes a little while longer for Audrey to accept his claims but the pair quickly become an item and begin getting to know each other a little better. Here, we chat to Sue about Nigel Havers, Audrey's love life and whether she thinks could ever marry again on screen.

What's it like working with Nigel Havers?
"Fabulous! We laugh a lot - I just seem to spend my time laughing! I'm like some terrible hyena! He's delightful. I hope it works on screen. We've done some super scenes and I hope they come over as well as we want them to. He is great fun, he knows what he's doing and he's lovely and helpful and makes me laugh. I hug and I kiss him and that's just off screen! All the ladies love him and I'll walk down the street to Sainsbury's and they'll all say 'You lucky thing!'

"He's charming and he knows what he's doing and he loves it, so he says. Well, he wouldn't say anything else would he?! He's been stuck with me, poor sod, for all the weeks he was first in but he's branched out now. He's been in The Rovers and worked with Rita so he has had a little it more fun!"

    And what about Rula Lenska?
"Oh yes, she was charming - hopefully her character Claudia will be in again. I think she's the stronger one [out of Audrey and Claudia] really and it's nice to have her. Audrey isn't quite as mouthy when Claudia's around! She treats Lewis as an appendage to go out with but I think Audrey's a little more fond of him than she should be."

Do you think Audrey's ready for love again?
"She'd better be because it's coming her way! She's narked by everybody saying 'He's just an escort' but she does become very clingy. It's a side of Audrey you haven't really seen. She suddenly realises - and pretends she doesn't! - that she has the hots for him."

Did you enjoy slapping Barbara Knox's character Rita?
"That's going to be on my CV darling! Nobody slaps Rita - I'll be hated! She was wonderful, though. We had someone to tell us how to do it so you don't burst someone's eardrum, so it was quite fun."

Does Rita's involvement in the story strengthen their friendship?
"It will eventually. It strengthens their friendship then it goes off at a tangent again. I think it's bound to work out alright in the end. I don't know how this is going to end but it won't be anything but tears, I should think."

What does Audrey discover in the Salon next week?
"The little black book, yes. It brings it home to her that she's just one of many and that actually Rita's been very right. It's a diary in which he writes down all the details of his clients to keep him organised - whether they've got kids or dogs or cats or ex-husbands so he can have his conversation right. Then it comes to Audrey and apart from my family and my shoe size, it says 'average tipper'. Average tipper? How hurtful is that?! It's awful - I broke down there and then!

"Lewis turns up for this blessed black book and I give it to him all lemon-lipped and he says 'What's the matter' and I say 'No, no just take the book Lewis, I've realised now, I'm just one of many'. Then he gets all charm personified and that's it - she's swept away again. It's wonderful - it's Mills & Boon!"

    They have a heart-to-heart, don't they?
"Yes, it's lovely. He wins her round and says 'No, I like you, I'd miss you' - all the things I love people saying! I have to go home and get my husband to practice! Then when Audrey's all emotional, he's gives her a kiss. It makes me cry to think of it because it's quite a sad scene, so that was wonderful! There's a lovely scene afterwards where Audrey's looking through this bloody black book and making fun of everybody. From then on, it's heaven.

"He turns up at the house and stays over but Audrey's got nothing in for breakfast! That made me laugh because in the scene, there's Audrey being all little girl and coy - which I don't find easy to do - and Lewis comes in. I say 'Do you want tea or coffee?' and he says 'Is it real coffee?'. Audrey says 'Oh no - instant', so that's mistake numero uno and then she follows that by saying 'I haven't got anything in for breakfast' - this woman's not really prepared is she! She's got nothing in! No coffee, nothing in for breakfast - that's terrible! Not the beginning of a wonderful friendship is it?!"

Do you think Audrey will ever be able to come to terms with Lewis's job?
"I doubt it - I think she's going to try but I think something will happen when he's rubbing her nose in it too much. I don't want to know though, because I'm enjoying it too much. Actually, I would like to know because I've become terribly possessive of him on screen and off - I don't want him working with anyone else! I'm terribly bossy like Audrey."

    Would Audrey ever marry again?
"I don't know - I don't think he's the marrying kind anyway but he's wonderful for a good time. I don't think she'd marry, no - she's just a bit bowled over by him at the minute. That's always a fatal time isn't it. If I can remember that far back, everything's rosy and everything's lovely and you don't think further than that. It'll go pear-shaped, it's bound to. There'll be more tears."

Can we please have more scenes with Audrey drunk?
"Of course, that's no problem for me love!"

Are you looking forward to the 50th anniversary?
"Yes! I'm not sure what's happening but it's all so exciting. We're doing all kinds of things now aren't we? I don't know that there's time to really celebrate, but we will! Isn't it wonderful that it's fifty?!"

    Audrey to kill?

TERRIFIED salon boss Audrey Roberts fears she will be sent down for murder after one of her customers dies while sitting in her hairdressing chair.

The busy beauty parlour is brought to a standstill when pensioner Enid is found dead. Audrey (Sue Nicholls, 67, above) puts the tragedy down to a faulty hairdryer.

Just before keeling over Enid is seen tucking into her favourite bourbon biscuits and praising David Platt (Jack P Shepherd, 23).

She says: “Isn’t David wonderful at washing hair? I’d never let anyone else wash my hair since he did it.”

Minutes later, Emily Bishop (Eileen Derbyshire, 79) asks her: “Please may I have one of those biscuits?” But to Emily’s horror, Enid is dead.

An ambulance arrives but paramedics are unable to revive the elderly customer. Audrey then faces an anxious wait to find out exactly how she passed away.

update: DS can confirm that, contrary to some reports today, there is no suggestion that Audrey is responsible for the death and she does not face any legal repercussions over the matter.

Typical sensationalist gutter journalism by the rag known as the Star. HTF would Audrey have ever been charged with murder even if the hairdryer had dodgy wiring. If she had knowingly used a hairdryer with dodgy wiring then the worst she would have faced would have been a manslaughter charge. However had the deceased been electrocuted I think it would have been a bit more obvious than Emily finding her dead in the chair.
