Casualty confirms reduction in number of episodes per year

Casualty has confirmed that every series will have less episodes compared to its peak going forward.

Since 2003, the medical drama has had between 42 and 48 episodes per series (with a series starting in August/September and lasting nearly a year). The 2021 series was an outlier due to the pandemic.

The latest series, which began last month, only has 36 episodes, and it seems that slightly lower episode count will be the standard going forward.

In a report by The Sun, rising production costs due to the cost of living crisis has led to the decision to produce fewer episodes per year for the foreseeable future.

The publication quotes a BBC spokesperson as stating: "This is not the first time the show has taken a break due to the busy autumn schedule.

"Our priority is always delivering quality over hours and due to super inflation in drama production we've taken the decision to slightly reduce the number of episodes per year in order to maintain the quality.

"We've received no complaints from cast and crew, and it will be back on air later this year."

As mentioned above, the soap is taking a little bit of a break after airing a few episodes of the current series. This kind of thing happened last year, as Casualty took at least two weeks off in October, November, and December, before airing more regularly when January rolled around.

Last weekend saw a two-parter air, which featured the departure of Jaye Jacobs' Donna Jackson after she was sentenced to 12 months in prison.
