Yes you're correct. As I recall when Ethan said he didn't think he could represent him because he knew the victim, and he needed a different solicitor the guy emphatically replied "no I want you". Pretty obvious why.

Could anyone do a worst job than Mary looking after Marlon ?

I think it is the script writers that have engineered it to be this way to make a story for boring Ethan.

I can't believe they have turned Leyla into a junkie. What next? Charles performing an exorcism on Cain, Al doing an unselfish act, Sam Dingle uttering a coherent sentence, Eco warriors super gluing their heads to Tate Haulage waggons, A mass murderer romping through the village killing the locals? Oh wait they already did that one.
