Great update, can't wait to read more
A couple e of hours later, everyone sat around a huge table, Sam sat next to Phil with her legs draped over his own.
Jo sat beside her, currently proving her lack of knowledge on all tings football, as she tried to explain the offside rule to Suzie, who was even less knowing and didn’t even realise there was an offside rule. Phil looked over at Zain, who rolled his eyes to the heavens, sighed and asked, “How can you not know what the offside rule is?”
“Well, I think there are more important things in life than a bunch of men running around a muddy filed chasing a bag of air”, Suzie replied, in her usual, straight to the point, no-nonsense tone.
“Well yeah”, Sam agreed. Who had been playing with Phil’s hands on her lap, in an attempt to stop him poking her, “But I can’t argue about the men part”, she continued with a slight gleam in her eye as she turned to wink at Jo.
“Hey, Phil protested, resuming his poking of her in the side, knowing she was ticklish. Sam let out a little squeal, wriggling about to try and get away.
“God you two, get a room, would ya?” Gina told the couple.
“Speaking off”, Sam began, looking down at her watch, “I should really get going.”
“Can’t you stay for one more?” Jo asked, as Sam rose to her feet, her arm trailing behind her as Phil kept tight hold of her hand.
“Abi’s staying out tonight and she said she would call me later. I haven’t seen her for a while, so I don’t really want to miss her call.”
Jo smiled, she was very fond of Sam’s daughter. “She still having fun at Uni?”
“Yeah, she loves it.”
“Come on then you, I’ll take you home”, Phil told her.
“See you all tomorrow”, Sam told them.
“Bye”, Phil followed suit, downing the rest of his pint and getting to his feet. Putting his arm over Sam’s shoulder, they made their way towards the door.
“You two behave”, Jo called, suppressing a little giggle, as she watched Sam usher her boyfriend out of the pub, before anyone else noticed her cheeks had turned a scarlet colour.
Outside the smoky pub, the cold wind hit Sam suddenly, causing her to shiver involuntarily. Before she could refuse, she felt Sam’s jacket around her shoulders, before he moved away to flag a taxi.
__
Paying the driver, Phil escorted Sam all the way to her front door.
“You want to come in for coffee?” she asked with a smile.
Phil’s grin said it all and she opened the door and let him follow her in. She checked the phone for messages on her way to the kitchen to find none.
Putting her bag on the side and flicking the kettle on, she turned to find Phil standing in the doorway. Leaning against the frame.
“You come in you know”, she told him, as she went to get two mugs out of the cupboard. “Sit down.”
“Yes Serge”, he mocked with a smile as he sat down at the table in the centre of her kitchen.
“Sam, can I ask you something?”
Sam was a bit sceptical at his suddenly serious voice and acknowledged the frown on his face with one of her own. “Yeah?”
“What made you change your mind? About us? Well, me really?”
Sam had known this question would come, but tried to push it to the back of her mind. As if it would make the question go away, she got up from the table and turning her back on him, went back to making the coffee. “I never did”, she all but whispered.
“Sorry?”
Sam briefly looked back at him to see the confused expression on his face. Trying to explain, she began, “I never did. I always felt something for you. I was just scared. You weren’t exactly renown for your faithfulness and respect of women.”
“I know, I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be”, she told him. “I’m not saying I likes who you were, but that’s in the past.” She took his hand across the table. “I wasn’t exactly perfect in the past either. We’re here now and all that matters s how much I love you.”
“You what?” Phil could not believe what he was hearing. “Did you mean that?” He had to be sure.
“More than anything.”
“Do you realise how long I have wanted to here you say that?” he asked, as he came up behind her, sliding his hands around her waist and nuzzling her neck with his chin.
Sam nodded. “I’m sorry I was . . .”
Phil leaned around her, to cut her off with a kiss. Breaking away, he told her, “I love you too.”
Turning fully around, Sam placed her arms around Phil’s neck. “You really mean that?”
Phil bent over a little to smother Sam’s lips with his own in a gentle kiss. Pulling away ever so slightly, Sam whispered, “I’ll take that as a yes then.”
Pulling his face closer to hers once more, this time their lips met with a passion, as Sam felt Phil push her up against the counter. The passion they had kept bottled up for so long erupted as hands roamed, their lips meeting again and again.
After several moments, Sam pulled back, gasping for breath.
She grabbed Phil’s hand, leading him to wards the door.
Realising where she was going Phil felt a little thrill inside, but he had to check. “Are you sure about this?”
Leaning in close again, she whispered “More than anything in my life.”
She resumed in leading Phil out of the kitchen and up the stairs, the coffee already forgotten.

Phil woke to find himself alone in Sam’s huge, floral print, king-sized bed. As the events of the previous night came flooding back to him, he couldn’t help a little grin, even as he felt worry grip his heart at the fact Sam was nowhere to be seen.
Rubbing his eyes open properly, he called out “Sam?”, as he made his way downstairs.
His only answer was silence as he walked into Sam’s spotless kitchen. The forgotten coffee mugs from last night were laid on the draining board beside the sink, along with a cereal bowl and spoon, where Sam had obviously had her breakfast and washed up before she left.
Moving further into the room, Phil noticed a piece of paper on the table, leant against the fruit bowl. Picking it up, he read Sam’s neat handwriting: -
Morning sleepyhead,
I tried to wake you up but you wouldn’t budge – kept muttering and rolling back over. Guess I must have worn you out :P
Anyway, sorry I had to get up early but I totally forgot about a meeting I have in like, oops, 20 minutes.
Help yourself to whatever you want – breads in the basket, cereal in the top cupboard and milks in the fridge (where else would it be?)
Oops, I’m, gonna be late,
See you later
Love Sam
Xxxxxxxxxx
Phil smiled, thinking about how much he really did love this woman he used to find any excuse to hurt.
Putting the note back on the table, he went to make himself a cup of coffee, before getting ready for work.
Walking back into CID having just finished her meeting with the new superintentdant, Jack and Neil, Sam heard her phone ringing. “DS Nixon”, she answered.
“Miss Nixon, this is Doctor Butler. I was just wondering if you could come into the surgery today?”
“Today?” she asked, unable to keep the shrill tone out of her voice.
“I know it’s short notice, but there’s something I need to discuss with you as soon as possible.”
Sam’s appointment at the surgery a couple of days ago came rushing back to her: the extra tests, the uneasy feeling she had had afterwards. But then she had become so distracted she had completely forgotten the whole thing.
Swallowing a big lump in her throat, she asked, “Is it bad?”
She didn’t like the hesitation on the other end of the phone, before the doctor replied, “I would prefer to talk to you in person if you don’t mind Miss Nixon. I have a free appointment space at 10.30, can you make that?”
“Erm . . “Sam stalled, glancing around the office: it wasn’t exactly bust around the place this morning. “Yeah ok, I’ll be there.”
Putting the phone back down, Sam pushed all her worries to the back of her mind as she went to see if Jack was in his office.
It’s probably just routine, she told herself, although she knew in her heart that something was very wrong.
“Morning Guv”, Phil greeting his DCI on his way into CID a couple of hours later.
“Morning Phil.”
Breezing into CID like he owned the place, Zain came up beside him, “Someone looks very happy with themselves this morning.”
Glancing around the office to find Sam once again nowhere to be seen, he turned back to Zain, ‘Have you seen Sam?”
With a little glint in his eye, Zain smiled, “ahhhh.”
“Ahhhh what?” Phil demanded, although he was feeling far to good to convey any anger in his voice.
“Nothing Serge”, Zain replied, still smiling. “Sam left about half an hour ago. Something about an appointment.”
“With who?”
“Dunno Serge, sorry.”
Phil shrugged, walked over to his desk and began shifting through some of his overdue paperwork, waiting for her to return to him.
