Halloween

I am 45 years old (very nearly), and I used to go out guising in my street on halloween.

Everyone did!

Sweets were an unusual treat, it was mainly monkey nuts and apples, and we used to have to sing or recite poetry, none of the two line jokes we get nowadays.

You never got money, and it was NEVER trick or treating - that is an American import.

We used to duck for apples, have soda scones covered in treacle hanging from string to bite from. My dad used to carve a fabulous tumshie lantern every year, from turnip (swede), never an American, cheats game, import of a pumpkin. Can you imagine how long it took to hollow out a turnip - I struggle chopping one for soup!

Halloween has a long tradition in Scotland, but as I say, it has become corrupted by the American version (I wouldn't be surprised if it were Scots who took Halloween to America in the first place - now we have their materialistic version back here!).

Last night I had 5 groups of guisers varying from 3 to 5, so about 20 kids in total. They were all from my neighbourhood, they were all under 12 and they all told jokes. I keep them on the doorstep now, when I was a kid you used to go into the persons house an do your party piece in front of the whole family.

I spent 20 on chocolate, sweets and lollies - I have a little left.

It brought a smile to my face, and I think that it is nice to see some traditions continue.

Of course, it would have been different if they were unknown teenagers trick and treating and throwing eggs. But, I haven't seen any of that here.

I'm not a fan of trick or treating. It's the only time of the year parents will let their kids dress up, knock on strangers doors and expect to get something for nothing. At least they sing at Christmas.

Hitchhiking is stupid and dangerous. If you must go to a party without your mothers knowledge you should be sensible and keep safe.

No hitchhiking, limit your alcohol and if you get involved in any hanky panky - keep it safe and consensual. Lads and alcohol, plus no supervision can lead to things that you may regret later.

I would urge you to tell your mum about the party, and to ask for a lift. Even Mums were 15 once.

when i said hitch hiking i meant it as in walking there. sorry for the confusion people. its what me and my friends say when we have to walk for ages to go somewhere. :P

the party was good. there wasnt any alcohol, the parents had hidden it fomr us. We didn't even have to walk there, we found out the bus goes right past the road her lane is off. I flirted with one guy but it was only to make my friend jealous so she would admit she likes him.
So, it was a good party, nice and safe.:angel:
The only thing that i didnt like was when we wacthed horror movies. I am now having nightmares about Scream.

yeah. All the people down my street are elderly so its not very nice to go trick ro treating. I remember one year, i saw some kids from the year below me goign to egg one of there houses.
I got my sisters boyfriend, who btw is 6ft and really muscly to go and scare them. he walked up behind them wearing a scream mask and went BOO. they jumped a frickin mile. the word must have spread so no-one but little kids and there parents come trick or treating down our street anymore.

i was working halloween night so couldnt do anything but its not my thing anyway

We call it guising up here not trick or treating. When I was a kid like Trin we made laterns out of turnips, which was mashed up or made into soup with the pieces that was scooped out. We also made homemade costumes none of these brought from the shop. When we went guising if we got money the the cash was put altogether to buy fireworks for bonfire night. We would make a guy and one of the parents would light the fireworks for us.

That sounds much nicer than the commercialised events we have now. The same with Christmas :thumbsdow:
