Mary Byrne has revealed that she was only told the night before that there would be a semi-final sing-off.
The former Tesco checkout worker, who was eliminated by the judges last night, admitted that it came as a surprise to the contestants when they found out their fate wouldn't solely be down to the public vote.
Speaking on This Morning, Byrne said: "I'm not sure if I found out Saturday morning or yesterday morning, I can't remember. It's because there was five... normally it would go to the public, but because there was five they had to do it that way apparently.
"I didn't know... although I think it was Saturday actually. Well we were given 'save me songs' on Saturday but I only practised it yesterday."
However, Byrne was not critical of the changes to the format, arguing that it was a waste of time worrying about it.
"I don't know about being penalised - I think they had to change it because of the way there was four in the finals. Do you know what I mean?" she said. "So I mean, they made a decision and it was done and there's not a lot more you can do. I was just so happy to be there."
Meanwhile, the Irish singer also hinted that Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell had begun planning a debut album for her. "I have the tour coming up and apparently I'm going to be making an album - please God I hope!" she said. "The album has been mentioned twice by Simon and Louis, so I don't know... it's just exciting."
Matt Cardle has said that he wants to write his own material rather than do covers after The X Factor.
The ex-painter and decorator is on a "collision course" with Simon Cowell, according to The Mirror, because the SyCo boss is already arranging a potential winner's single for the 27-year-old.
"I want as much control over my career and debut album as possible," said Cardle last week. "I wouldn't do covers as I want to write my own stuff. We'd come to some agreement I'm sure."
However, a show source warned that Dannii Minogue's act may end up in trouble if he doesn't step in line.
"Simon respects Matt as an artist and he doesn't want to stifle his creative side, but that certainly doesn't mean he is going to give him free rein to release whatever song he wants," said the insider.
"When it comes down to it, all Simon cares about is selling as many singles as possible and getting the Christmas No.1. If that means making Matt sing a cover, then that's what's going to happen... If he wants to truly be a success he will have to learn that Simon's the boss and what he says goes."
Good on Matt for standing up for his own beliefs at least he is able to write his own material unlike previous winners. I just have two requests for cover verisons. Roberta Flack and Bruno Mars. Please Matt sing Roberta Flack on Saturday night.
Yeah.. but did you see the bit about sing a cover or out you go... Matt is right.. sing your own songs... I hope this doesn't affect his chances of winning

Christina Aguilera is being lined up to duet with Matt Cardle on this weekend's X Factor final, according to sources.
Aguilera will be appearing on the reality show to perform songs from her new movie Burlesque, reports Metro. However, producers are also hopeful of convincing the singer to perform with Cardle as part of the traditional celebrity duets.
An insider said: "A duet between Christina and Matt would be a magical moment - just like when Beyoncé dueted with Alexandra Burke during 2008's final.
"Matt's voice is phenomenal and Christina can hit notes no-one has dreamed of. They would be a perfect pairing no matter what song they sang."
Cardle's mentor Dannii Minogue is believed to have already approached Aguilera about the potential performance, in a bid to prevent her fellow judges securing the star for their acts.
An X Factor spokesperson said: "We're not confirming any of our guest performers."
