Emmerdale star Duncan Preston is to take a break from the soap to tread the boards in To Kill A Mockingbird, DS can confirm.
The actor, who plays Doug Potts on the ITV1 show, has signed up to appear as iconic lawyer Atticus Finch in a forthcoming stage version of Harper Lee's 1960 novel.
Preston will take on the stage role early next year as the production begins a tour around the country.
An ITV spokesperson said that Preston will take a five-month break from Emmerdale from January in order to appear in the play.
Preston previously portrayed Finch in a 2007 production of the tale, which saw his performance receive critical acclaim.
The star has been part of the Emmerdale cast for three years.

EMMERDALE beauty Lucy Pargeter has alerted the soap's security chiefs after a fan got a tattoo of her face on his leg.
The infatuated man has bombarded the actress, who plays loudmouth Chastity Dingle, with letters and gifts for months.
He stopped her outside TV studios and showed her the giant tattoo on his calf.
A source close to the Lucy, 33, said: "She loves all her fans but she's worried about this one.
"He's there when she arrives and leaves - like she's all he cares about. It's a bit much."
Sources said the man was formerly obsessed with Corrie star Tina O'Brien.

Emmerdale representatives have dismissed claims that Lucy Pargeter is concerned over the behaviour of a fan.
Earlier today, a newspaper reported that Pargeter had alerted the soap's security bosses after learning that a loyal supporter has a tattoo of her face on his leg.
It was suggested that the actress - who plays Chas Dingle - first became aware of the man's body art when he approached her unexpectedly to show it off.
Responding to the report, an Emmerdale spokesperson told PA: "Lucy absolutely isn't bothered at all. She actually finds it quite amusing."
The rep added: "And the guy even asked her permission before getting the tattoo done."
The fan in question is also thought to have a tattoo of Pargeter's screen relative Charley Webb (Debbie Dingle).

Emmerdale star Alice Coulthard has tied the knot with partner Owen Dyke.
The actress, who plays troubled Maisie Wylde on the ITV1 soap, had her wedding ceremony at the weekend following a two-year romance, PA reports.
Guests included Coulthard's screen brother Lyndon Ogbourne (Nathan), who discussed the occasion on Twitter this morning.
Ogbourne told fans: "What an amazing weekend! Alice and Owen are the best! Beautiful, emotional ceremony, wonderful vows and a festival party that smashed it!"
In an interview earlier this year, Coulthard described Dyke as her "rock" and said that she feels "incredibly lucky" to have his support.
The star recently announced that she is to leave Emmerdale later this year.

Ex-Emmerdale star Adele Silva has been cast in horror comedy Strippers Vs. Werewolves.
The movie, which is being produced by Dead Cert's Jonathan Sothcott, will revolve around the accidental killing of werewolf chief Jack Ferris in a stripclub. The girls who work at the venue then have until the next full moon before his pack seeks them out for revenge.
Silva told Digital Spy of her role in the production: "I'm really looking forward to being involved in S vs. W. The script is very funny and all the female roles are very strong.
"It's something you can get your teeth into, which is great for an actress. It makes a nice change from all the guy-centric, gun-toting gangster films out there - a bit of girl power for a change!"
Sothcott, whose 2008 film Karma Magnet also starred Silva, added of the 29-year-old's casting: "Adele's a really underrated actress. She did my first film years ago and I've been looking for something else to do with her. She has terrific comic timing and, obviously, is really hot, so I had to offer her Strippers Versus Werewolves!
"It's an out and out comedy, but more in the style of '80s movies like Vamp, Fright Night and The Monster Squad than Lesbian Vampire Killers!"
Silva also appeared in the 2009 Danny Dyer movie Doghouse.

Emmerdale star Danny Miller has revealed that he has received hate mail.
It was reported last month that the actor, who plays gay mechanic Aaron Livesy in the ITV1 soap, is dating co-star Kirsty Leigh Porter (Roz Fielding).
Writing on his Twitter account, Miller admitted that the report had been the cause of the angry letters.
"Sad to read hate mail sent in by fans (well) that don't want me to have a gfriend. Sorry! (sic)," he wrote.
Earlier this year, the actor admitted that he had received "negative" letters from viewers because of his character's sexuality storyline.

Emmerdale star Lyndon Ogbourne has revealed his shock at receiving "explicit" love letters from viewers.
The actor who appears in the ITV soap as Nathan Wylde admitted that he was confused by the attention he received in his role as the devious bad boy.
"It's weird," he told the Mirror.
"Women write in to me saying, 'You're the most horrific person I've ever seen in a soap and you're horrible and my mum hates you - but I wonder whether you're any good in bed.'
"Another woman wrote a letter saying how disgusted she was by Nathan and then went on to be quite explicit about her wanting him to take her to bed. There are some corrupt people out there."
Ogbourne recently admitted that he enjoys the abuse he receives as Nathan, who is trying to frame his half-brother Ryan Lamb (James Sutton) for their father's murder.
He added: "Obviously a lot of women really do like a bad boy, but personally I find it hard to take in the idea of being a heart-throb.
"Nathan is doing horrific stuff - it's difficult to understand that people find him fit."

Training for a tough triathlon hasn't harmed the physiques of Tom Lister, Matthew Wolfenden and Lyndon Ogbourne, as this tasty snap shows.
But preparing for tomorrow's gruelling event hasn't all been plain sailing.
Matthew Wolfenden, who plays David Metcalfe, lost his pricey set of wheels to a bike thief after a training session.
Tom Lister (Carl King in the soap) recounted the sorry tale.
"Matt and I went for a bike ride and then a swim on Tuesday and when we came out of the pool Matt's bike had been nicked. That wasn't a highlight.
"We had to rush round and find him a replacement bike in time for the race."
But Tom was impressed that Matthew kept such a cool head after the theft.
He said: "He's taken it amazingly well to be honest. I would have been furious and he was very calm about the whole thing. It was a very expensive bike and he wasn't able to claim it all back on insurance."
Three three stars will swim, cycle and run in the London Triathlon in aid of Leukaemia Research.

Lyndon Ogbourne has revealed that he was working as a male nanny when he was offered the role of Nathan Wylde in Emmerdale.
The 27-year-old told The Mirror that he had struggled to afford London life while living as a struggling actor.
"It was a really bleak time," he said. "It was a tough time in my life but what I've been through has only made me stronger and more determined to achieve everything I want for my future.
"I was working so hard for very little reward but those times have helped to shape me into the person I am today."
Ogbourne revealed that he had been caring for a young boy when he joined the ITV soap's cast last year.
"I was looking after this little boy when I got the call," he said. "We'd just come back from swimming and we were both jumping around with excitement. He was 8 and I'd taken him to filming jobs with me in the summer holidays, so he knew how much it meant to me.
"I'd had enough of bar work and I wanted to start doing something that made me feel worthwhile."
The actor added: "There was a boom in male nannies at the time. A lot of families with boys wanted a more active nanny and I loved it. I was at a low ebb with work and the break-up of a long-term relationship and it was a solace for me."
