pete should kill himself or attempt it over guilt make his storyline different to cameron instead of pinning ross death on cain
Pete Barton faces a backlash from all of his loved ones next week after he comes clean about killing his brother Ross.
When the police believe they may have found Ross's body, a panic-stricken Pete decides to tell Debbie everything before also confiding in his father James.
Here, Anthony Quinlan - who plays Pete - shares his thoughts on another dramatic week for his troubled character.
How is Pete feeling now that some time has passed since his deadly fight with Ross?
"Pete has been completely consumed by guilt ever since. He always knew that Ross and Debbie had a history, but he'd tried to put that behind him. He really wanted to move on with Debbie and live happily ever after with her.
"Once Pete found out about the affair at the wedding, he acted in a very irrational way and literally saw red! Pete felt that he'd been embarrassed in front of everyone in the village. It was the ultimate betrayal by Ross. Pete wanted to hurt Ross, but he definitely didn't want to kill him."
So does Pete regret what happened?
"Definitely - he really was just caught up in the moment. Pete had warned Ross in the hospital to stay away, but Ross was persistent and was still getting in his face. In the end, Pete couldn't contain his feelings and just snapped."
How would you describe the relationship between Pete and Debbie after everything that happened?
"It's been very up and down, but now Pete just wants to forget the wedding day ever happened. It was supposed to be the happiest day of his life but it turned into the worst! Now he wants to wipe the slate clean and just be happy with Debbie, but we'll have to wait and see whether that's actually possible."
Next week, the police believe they might have found Ross's body so Emma and James have to identify it. How does Pete feel as the net closes in?
"It's a shock to him, because at first he thought he was getting away with it. By this point, nobody has heard from Ross for a while - but that's not unusual as he's done his disappearing act a number of times. As soon as the police get involved, panic sets in for Pete because he knows that he wasn't very careful about disposing of the body. Pete genuinely fears that the end is near."
Is that why Pete tells Debbie? How does she react?
"Yes, Pete works himself into so much of a frenzy that he decides the police are going to know that he's the killer straight away. He decides that it's best to come clean and tell everyone what he's done.
"Debbie flies off the handle when Pete tells her the truth and she can't believe what he's saying - especially after she's let him into her home and let him look after her kids. She's completely shocked and worried about what he'll do next."
Is Debbie also upset about the news because she loved Ross?
"Definitely. There was obviously a massive bond between her and Ross, which is still difficult for Pete to come to terms with. He'll probably never accept it because it is the ultimate betrayal. Debbie also compares Pete to Cameron because the situation is bringing back bad memories for her."
As the rest of the Bartons find out, how will this affect Pete's relationship with his family?
"Pete has always been the golden boy who could never do any wrong in his dad's eyes. Recently he's started developing more of a relationship with his mum too. The revelation is really going to throw a spanner in the works and he's not going to be seen as that good guy figure anymore. Pete can't expect anything from his family now - there's no way back for him, really!"
How have you felt about taking on such a dramatic story?
"What's great is that it's been going on for months - as far back as the whole love triangle starting a year ago. It's been unbelievable to be given a storyline of this size and to be trusted with something like this. There's also more to come. It's fabulous writing from the writers and the storyline is a great idea from our producer Kate Oates."

Pete Barton is to be made a pariah next week when he confesses to new wife Debbie that he killed his own brother Ross.
Fraught scenes will see Pete panic after the police swoop into the village with news that they've discovered a body. Feeling that the net is closing in, Pete is left feeling that he has little choice but to admit the truth.
"When the police get involved, the panic is raised to the next level," says actor Anthony Quinlan. "He thinks the end of the line is near. He's consumed with guilt and he works himself into such a frenzy that he feels it's best to come clean and tell everyone what he's done."
Debbie had, of course, been having an affair with Ross prior to his demise, the bombshell news of her infidelity breaking at her wedding to Pete.
But Debbie's shock at the news coming out is nothing compared to how she reacts when she learns of Ross's demise.
"Debbie has to be the unluckiest character in soap history when it comes to relationships," continues Quinlan. "She can't believe what Pete is telling her. Imagine being told something like that? This is someone who she let into her home and look after her kids. So she's completely shocked and worried what Pete's next actions will be."
This isn't the first time that Debbie has been romantically involved with a killer. And the terror she endured at the hands of homicidal maniac Cameron Murray is back at the forefront of her mind following Pete's confession.
"Debbie went through a massive ordeal with Cameron and Pete's obviously aware of this. When he first started seeing Debbie, it took a lot of assurances from Pete for her to trust. So this revelation is massive and her reaction is pretty big too."
But it's not just Debbie who's left reeling by the revelation. Pete has always been seen as the most level-headed member of the Barton clan, but his family look set to reassess their opinion once they learn about his moment of madness.
"Pete has always been the golden boy as far as his family are concerned," says Quinlan. "He can never do anything wrong in his dad's eyes. But this is really going to throw a spanner in the works and he'll no longer be seen as that figure. As soon as he opens up and confesses to James what he's done, the lid's off and he'll no longer be able to expect anything from his family. There's no way back for Pete."

I wonder where Pete will go and live now
..
I always thought Vanessa and Pete would have made a nice couple.
And Leyla far better for Ross than Debbie.
Debbie and Andy could have been together...
But yes-would be boring if they all were happy :)
I have a feeling that with this storyline I start to like Pete more than Ross..
Anthony Quinlan (Pete) should never have accepted the 'Ross in the woods' script presented to him about his role in Emmerdale. Before this he was always the stable mild-mannered elderly brother caring type for his other two brothers. What has happened during/since Summer Fate week has really changed all of that and just reflects how some people are expected to 'sell their soul' for money in the workplace nowadays. If I had been Anthony Quinlan's agent, I would have strongly advised Anthony to reject the script and storyline outright. He really has been set up to be the 'fall-guy' over this wacky and dreadful storyline. Just what is my respect for Anthony Quinlan right now? =0.
I checked the Emmerdale TV viewer ratings earlier today from June 1st until August 14th and I can tell you all now, as the readers/posters on this soapboards.co.uk forum, that the complete destruction of Pete's character has gained only about 0.3million regular viewers to date.
So, Anthony (Pete) was it really worth it? I really believe not.
I will post some graphs and stuff in due course (but maybe in another thread here) to follow up my comments about viewer rating figures.
