Coronation Street has revealed more details of Peter Barlow's upcoming shooting storyline.
The popular character will find himself in danger next week when the gang who've been targeting his son Simon (Alex Bain) turn their attentions to him instead.
When Simon returns home from Cornwall, troublesome Tyler Jefferies and his friends launch a campaign of intimidation to make sure that he won't testify against Tyler in court.
This includes sending threatening text messages and even trying to bundle Simon into a car on the Street, until Kate Connor (Faye Brookes) plays hero by intervening and getting him to safety.
At the end of next week, Tyler changes tactics by pulling up outside Underworld in a car and pointing a gun straight at Peter and Carla.
Before long, Tyler fires the weapon and hits Peter square in the chest – much to the horror of Carla as she watches on.
Corrie bosses aren't confirming any further details or whether Peter will be seriously injured, but all will be revealed in next week's dramatic episodes.
Chris Gascoyne, who plays Peter, explained: "This has been hanging over them for months and Peter knows Simon is not safe with Tyler out for revenge.
"Things turn really nasty when Peter gets caught in the crossfire, literally. Tyler's mates have a gun and they fire out of a car window. Peter is hit in the chest and Carla is hysterical."
Asked whether Carla has inadvertently revealed her feelings for Peter with her reaction, Chris replied: "Michelle certainly reads that into it, but whether Carla admits it is another matter.
"Who knows if they'll end up back together? Carla will certainly try to keep him at arms length, so they will be skirting around each other for some time to come, I think."

Chris Gascoyne is teasing an "unlikely" friendship for his Coronation Street character.
The actor, who plays Peter Barlow on the ITV soap, recently revealed that the new year will see Peter bond with an unexpected Weatherfield resident after setting about a new project following Carla (Alison King) gifting him with a boat.
Unfortunately, he won't yet reveal who that mystery character will be — though he has confirmed it isn't his son.
"Carla gifts him a boat," Gascoyne said.
"It’s one that would sail to the Caribbean. It’s beautifully called 'Lost Boy', he has to do it all up, which he does to pristine condition with a certain person that we can’t name. A very unlikely person who’s in the show. It’s not Simon."
Gascoyne recently concerned fans when he told Digital Spy that his character should be killed off.
So, could Peter's plan to set sail actually end in tragedy?
Worryingly, he isn't ruling it out — but only time will tell.

Primary school responsible for scriptwriting then .. cannot think of anything but show Peter falling off the wagon instead of portraying somebody that struggles but manages to stay sober even when faced with difficulties .. ffs With all the sombre storylines at the moment this is really not something I am looking forward to

Chris Gascoyne will take an extended break from Coronation Street later in the year.
The actor has been playing Peter Barlow on the ITV soap for 23 years, but is due to temporarily bow out in upcoming episodes.
Digital Spy has learnt Gascoyne is taking a break from the cobbles as he's done on other occasions, though he is still set to appear on screen until the end of 2023.
At the moment, there isn't a set date for his return to Weatherfield, but it is reported that the door has been left open for more storylines involving his character Peter in the future.
During his absence from the sop, the actor will focus on other ventures, including playing the villainous Captain Hook in The All New Adventures of Peter Pan, a production running from December 8 until December 31 at The Alban Arena in St Albans.
"The Alban Arena are delighted to announce Coronation Street legend Chris Gascoyne will star as Captain Hook in The All New Adventures of Peter Pan this pantomime season!" The Alban Arena officially announced on Instagram last week.
"Chris Gascoyne is famous for his role as Peter Barlow in Britain's top soap Coronation Street in which he has led numerous high-profile storylines to great acclaim.
"This promises to be our most spectacular pantomime yet with stunning sets, dazzling costumes, and a star-studded cast. This is a must-see show for the whole family.
"Don't miss your chance to experience the wonder and excitement of Neverland once more in Paul Hendy's pantomime sequel!"

Is he going to kill Stephen and gets sent to prison so the actor can go on his extended break from Corrie???
Chris Gascoyne has revealed that he is delighted that Peter Barlow is the person the Coronation Street producers chose to kill murderer Stephen Reid.
Chris says it was perfect timing that he had decided to leave the show just as they were exploring the end of the serial killer storyline, and that the aftermath of the death will have a huge effect on the recovering alcoholic in the coming weeks.

Iain MacLeod has spilled details on a special final episode for Peter this Christmas, promising a ?greatest hits? for Peter and the love of his life, Carla.
Branding the entry ?surprising? and ?brilliant?, he revealed that Boxing Day will see a two-hander special for the couple, before they part ways in emotional scenes.
Coronation Street films Peter Barlow's exit scenes as Chris Gascoyne bows out.
Coronation Street has filmed exit scenes for Peter Barlow, with actor Chris Gascoyne spotted filming his character's departure at a tram station.
In filming photos obtained by Digital Spy, Peter is pictured arriving at the station as a tram pulls in, before he steps onto the tram, which appears to be heading towards Piccadilly. He looks thoughtful as he makes his departure, while holding onto his bags.
Peter's final scenes are due to air on Boxing Day.
Peter's tram trip marks Gascoyne's final scenes as Peter for the foreseeable future, after playing the character across several stints since 2000.
It was confirmed in July that Gascoyne would be taking an extended break from the soap, with the door left open for his return in the future.
During his break the actor is expected to take on other roles, beginning with a stint in pantomime at The Alban Arena in St Albans, where the star will play Captain Hook in The All New Adventures of Peter Pan.
The scenes further confirm that Peter won't be heading to prison for killing Stephen Reid by knocking him down with his car, after the police revealed in scenes last week that they wouldn't be taking any further action against Peter over Stephen's death.
Despite apparently being in the clear legally, Peter remains burdened with guilt over killing Stephen, and Gascoyne has already revealed that Peter is now "in deep conflict with himself".
"At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how it happened ? he has killed someone," he explained. "It is impossible to imagine what that must feel like. Could you ever rest, could you sleep?"
It remains to be seen what sort of impact Peter's departure will have on his wife Carla, with actress Alison King, who plays her, recently telling Digital Spy and other media that Carla will be damaged by the events surrounding Stephen, but will also come out fighting as usual.
"There will be an influx of all those things," she said. "The good thing is that Carla will have an answer one way or another about what's happened."

Peter Barlow is set to leave his wife Carla distraught before walking away from Weatherfield.
In new Corrie scenes airing on ITV, he reads a letter from the hospital before shoving it in his pocket. He then admits to Tim Metcalfe that he can't get Stephen Reid's death out of his mind.
The pair end up in the hot tub at No.4, with Tim advising his friend to forget about Stephen and focus on the positive aspects of life. Peter confesses he's worried that his marriage has run its natural course, with Carla forever occupied by the factory.
Later on, Carla is surprised to find Peter cleaning the flat after he'd suggested he was too busy to meet up for lunch. He reveals that he's arranged to meet the mother of his liver donor, and Carla promises to stick by his side.
As the couple attend Peter's support group together, he discusses losing all interest in life, saying every day has become a chore, which leaves Carla heartbroken.
Michael Bailey nips by the factory shortly afterwards to discover Carla on her laptop. When she shows him the Christmas present she's bought Peter, Michael is astonished.
Back in October, the soap's executive producer Iain MacLeod told Digital Spy and other press that this drama reaches its climax on Boxing Day.
"They reach this enormous fork in the road where they love each other, but perhaps their happiness is no longer reliant on each other. Maybe they start to wonder if they'd be happier in some other situation somewhere else, basically," he teased of Peter and Carla.
"It all builds up to this incredibly surprising Boxing Day episode. There's a huge two-hander between the two of them ? more or less they are the only two cast in the episode.
"It's a greatest hits compilation for those of you that have been big fans of Peter and Carla since the start. It picks over every single detail of who they are, what they've been as a couple, what they want for their future and what happiness looks like for them. It's the culmination of a decade-long love story, and I think the viewers are going to really love it."
