Anticipation is building among soap fans today (October 17) ahead of the first live Emmerdale episode in the show's 40-year history.
Cast and crew have now reached the end of their official preparation period for the hour-long anniversary broadcast, having completed two full-length dress rehearsals yesterday.
Digital Spy understands that while official rehearsal time has not been scheduled for today, any specific scenes which still need fine-tuning will continue to be worked on in the build-up to transmission this evening.
Emmerdale bosses have managed to keep many of the storyline details for the live episode under wraps. However, the special edition will focus on the aftermath of two weddings as last night's instalment saw Katie Sugden marry Declan Macey, and Chas Dingle tie the knot with Dan Spencer.
Show chiefs have tipped Chas, played by Lucy Pargeter, as one of the main characters to watch out for as the 40th birthday storylines reach a climax.
Wanting to escape the blackmail of her ex-fiancé Carl King, Chas is hoping to flee the village with Dan - but as plans in soapland rarely go smoothly, it won't be a surprise if she runs into trouble.
Viewers can also expect two births in Emmerdale Live as Gennie Walker and Debbie Dingle will both be welcoming their babies into the world, bringing joy to them and their loved ones.
Before the night is out, though, events will take a startling turn as producers have promised an "untimely death" which will rock the village to its core.
While the unlucky individual's identity is being kept secret, series producer Stuart Blackburn has said of the shock twist: "I think it will move people. It will change our characters' lives for a long, long time and then drive the show forward with new stories for the coming months."
Meanwhile, executive producer John Whiston recently teased: "All I want to say about this particular death is that the writers felt that the character had it coming from the soap gods."
In total, Emmerdale Live will feature 61 cast members and 350 supporting artistes, while 70 crew members will be working on the night - almost double the number for a regular Emmerdale shooting day.
Tony Prescott, who was in charge of Coronation Street's live transmissions in 2000 and 2010, is the director of the special.
Unusually for a soap live episode, Emmerdale's broadcast will be filmed entirely on-location at the show's village base, leaving the team exposed to the elements on the night - and there is no plan B in place to keep the cast dry in the event of rain.
A number of cast members have expressed concern over the weather in recent weeks, while Blackburn has said: "A bit of wind and lots of rain, I'd be happy with that - it's the gale force that we're dreading."
As well as the broadcast itself tonight, dedicated fans can get extra insight online as a series of secret backstage webcams have been hidden in the village, allowing viewers to get a fully immersive experience of the live production.
An ITV2 backstage show will also air immediately after the episode, featuring exclusive reaction interviews with the cast.
Emmerdale Live airs tonight from 7pm on ITV1.
i hope the murder/death happens at home farm to robbie or declan instead of carl or jimmy
EE and Corrie's live episodes were much better I think quite disappointing to me

Well done Emmerdale top episode even though it was obvious and expected I still thought Carl would survive
The actors who play Chas, Carl, Debbie and Gennie were great
I laughed loads at Paddy and Nikhill
Happy Birthday Emmerdale
Watched the follow up show on ITV2, actually moved to tears with the farewells to Carl/Tom.
Some good moments, Paddy very funny ,Chas,Carl,Gennie, very good.Debbie was OK but that continual birth noise went on too long for me. Marlon topped my poll for the most annoying closely followed by Katy who should have had her head completely submerged in the top tier of the cake and left there. The second tier used for Marlon, Robbie,Cameron and Andy Sugden. Where was Alan Turner ? must be one of the longest serving members of the cast ,perhaps he was unwell. I probably expected too much for the live show ,bit disappointed , could have been condensed into 30 mins imo.
cameron and laurel scenes were pointless
I dont think I noticed any mistakes was there some?
Emmerdale star Nick Miles has admitted that the loss of co-star Tom Lister feels like a real bereavement.
Lister's character Carl King was killed in the soap's hour-long live episode last week, as Cameron Murray (Dominic Power) delivered a fatal blow to his head with a brick.
Miles, who plays Carl's brother Jimmy King in the ITV1 soap, commented that he feels "very odd" about losing his on-screen sibling.
He told What's on TV: "I shared a dressing room with Tom Lister, and every time I go into work now there's a space that reminds me of the loss.
"It's a funny thing in soap, but when a character dies you kind of feel it a bit like a real death."
Discussing Jimmy's state of mind after Carl's murder, Miles explained: "He's feeling about as low as he's ever felt. The last of his brothers is dead.
"Carl was the loosest cannon, the most unpredictable, but in many ways he was also the brother Jimmy was always closest to. He's feeling very, very bad and wracked with guilt."
He went on to say: "Carl had behaved appallingly towards Jimmy and his own little family - he kicked them all out on the street and was selling the business to Charity.
"And there was still this obsession with Chas. Jimmy was at his wits' end with Carl - there was nothing left to do but smack him."
Lister has previously revealed that he was "thrilled" with Carl's dramatic exit storyline, while Miles also praised his co-stars for their work on the 40th anniversary live special.
Emmerdale's live episode will be investigated by Ofcom following a handful of complaints over its violent content. :banned: :D
Ofcom has confirmed that it has received 18 complaints over the episode. The broadcasting regulator will now assess whether the scenes were suitable for the programme's 7pm timeslot.
An ITV spokesperson told Broadcast: "We are aware that there were a few complaints to Ofcom about the level of violence in the episode. The programme also got very many letters and emails praising it.
"We were very careful to keep the drama within acceptable bounds for pre-watershed scheduling, and the episode was preceded by a continuity announcement that some scenes might be upsetting."
Emmerdale Live was the highlight of the soap's 40th birthday celebrations, pulling in a peak audience of 9.15 million viewers on the night.
The episode saw actor Tom Lister's final scenes in the role of Carl, as his enemy Cameron Murray murdered him shortly after his altercation with Chas.
Emmerdale star Dominic Power has said that he was "cool as a cucumber" when taking part in the soap's live episode.
The actor had a big part to play in the challenging 40th anniversary broadcast as his character Cameron Murray murdered Carl King (Tom Lister) in the climax to their blackmail storyline.
Power told The Mirror: "It was hugely flattering to be asked to play such a pivotal role in the live episode, and a huge privilege to be part of TV history.
"I was so nervous on the night. On a scale of 1-10 nerves? I was at 20. But about an hour before going on air, I went cool as a cucumber. I thought, 'I won't get a chance to do this again, and I want to enjoy it'."
The truth about Carl's death currently remains a secret in the village as everyone thinks that jailed Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) delivered the fatal blow, including Chas herself.
However, Power added: "It doesn't feel like [Cameron has] got away with it. He's feeling guilty about Chas, and he's no longer in the family unit with Debbie and Sarah. He's a shell of himself, and he's slowly going insane."
Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1.
Does anyone here know when the 5th part of ED 40 (Woolpack) will be aired?
Episode: 5 of 5
Thursday, 6 December 2012, 8:30PM - 9:00PM
Factual
As one of Britain’s best-loved soaps turns 40, this all-new series for ITV takes a look back at the most dramatic, moving, shocking and amusing storylines the show has witnessed.
Spilt into five parts, the series looks at:
• The Headline Makers
• The Affairs
• The Crimes
• The Weddings
• The Woolpack
Narrated by Gaynor Faye, each thirty-minute show is packed with the soap’s most memorable scenes and exclusive interviews with actors both past and present who give their views on all the best moments in the soap’s history.
Episode Five – The Woolpack
The Woolpack is at the heart of the Emmerdale village and the centre of many of the soap’s major storylines.
From the fires, plane crashes and armed robberies the pub has seen, to the spaghetti western style stand-offs, this special programme looks back at the most turbulent times Yorkshire’s favourite pub has ever seen.
Charlie Hardwick, who plays Val Pollard, tells the programme: “Well, it’s the arena, isn’t it, The Woolpack? All your victims and villains in one place. It’s great. A powder keg.”
In 2004 a natural disaster struck Emmerdale costing the life of one of the most popular characters and almost calling time on The Woolpack itself.
On set, rain and wind machines and lightening effects were used to show a vicious storm ripping through the village on New Year’s Eve. Unable to make things work with her husband, Marlon, Trisha had decided to leave the village, but as the weather got worse she sheltered in a phone box to read a letter he had written her.
Sheree Murphy, who played Tricia Dingle says: “She kind of made her mind up to go back to him but, really, she shouldn’t have done, because The Woolpack fell on her. I loved the scene where rubble actually finally falls on Trisha and there’s just the eye poking out. The rubble was made of foamy stuff and they had it all painted. There was a few real bricks around, but anything that was actually placed over me, wasn’t real.”
There were emotional scenes as Marlon found Trisha and she tried to tell him that she was going back to him as she lay trapped under the bricks.
Sheree adds: “The producers said to me, ‘I’m really sorry but would you mind lying there, we’re going to have to cut for a break, the crew need a cup of tea. I was like, ‘No, I don’t mind, er how long are you going to be though?’ and literally, they just left me, because to place me all again for continuity would be an absolute nightmare. I just remember lying there thinking, ‘This is my job.’ I’m lying under rubble at 3am. But I loved it, it was brilliant.”
Emmerdale at 40 also looks back over the parties the pub has seen including Chastity’s hen night and a slave night. Plus, how some of the village’s most loved-characters made their first appearances in The Woolpack, such as Laurel dressed as a bee and Chastity dressed as a stripping nun.
In 2010 property developer Charlie Haynes, played by George Costigan, swept pub landlady Diane Sugden off her feet but planned to con her out of all her savings.
Elizabeth Estensen, who plays Diane, tells the programme: “This was the first time that she’d been truly happy since Jack died. And she thought there was a future for her and that they were going to live in France. It was a whole new life opening up for her, and then it got quickly shut down.”
On the morning Diane was supposed to leave The Woolpack, Charlie went missing. She discovered he was in France and decided to go after him but when she turned up at ‘his’ chateau, she discovered it was owned by someone else.
Diane was left in financial ruin until she decided to pair up with Chastity to own the pub together.
And only a year later they, and the rest of the villagers, witnessed the biggest show-down The Woolpack had ever seen. Cain Dingle had been on a recent mission of destruction through the village, having an affair with a married woman, a fling with a teenager and waging a hate campaign against Charity and her fiancé, when he walked into The Woolpack one night and everyone threatened to leave if he was served.
Jeff Hordley, who plays Cain Dingle, says: “It’s almost Western-style saloon drama when a storyline comes to a head and it has to be played out in The Woolpack. The adrenaline is really pumped, because it’s like you’ve got a live audience and they’re all looking at you going, ‘So come on, what are you going to do with this?’”
Emmerdale at 40 recounts how Cain went around the pub and one-by-one told the villagers what he thought of them. Then, afterwards, someone went after him for revenge. Cain was hit on the head and a whodunit ensued. There were over seven people in the frame, but when Cain tried to frame Jai for the attack – the real attacker came forward as his dad, Zak.
Jeff adds: “I think you really got to see that side of Cain and Zak as well. This bond that’s really strong between them but smashed apart by what’s happened.”
Emmerdale at 40 is produced by Becky Sawle for Shiver. The series producer is Yvette Lyons and the executive producer is Mark Robinson.
I'm glad Thomas is staying around hopefully he might discover the truth and at least him being around unsettles Chas and Cameron
