Doctors aren't testing for Swine flu now, it's just a telephone diagnosis. There simply isn't the man power, labs or funds to test everyone who thinks they have it.
You can see the list of people affected here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8155464.stm
I'm ****ed.Quote:
Patients who have had drug treatment for asthma
What does heart disease cover? Is it any heart problem?
So on the phone they could tell you, you have it but you might not actaully have it
They'll ask you your symptoms, take a history, ask if you've been in contact with other confirmed cases or live in a high risk area then decide if you've just got a cold or swine flu.
It's like the lottery. You're better off tossing a coin
If there is no medicine for the 'ordinary' flu, other than paracetamol and/or lemsip etc, why is tamiflu supposed to help with swine flu?
Tamiflu and Relenza are antvirals so in theory they could treat normal winter flu. However, like all antibiotics, overuse reduces efficiency and increases resistance so they aren't commonly used except in extreme cases.
Not everybody has been getting Tamiflu. Relenza is only going to be used when the virus mutates and becomes resistant to Tamiflu.
im the same. im only slightly scared now cos of people i know have it and stuff, before it wasnt near me so i didnt care. i heard on the news that 65000 people ( i think it was) are estimated to die from it, though i know loads of people die from normal flu too though i dunno how it compares to that estimate? and i dunno the difference either, the symptons they are talking about seem to be the same for normal flu so i dunno how you can tell. apparently the kid at the playschool my sis helps at doesnt actually have swine flu, the doctor just gave tamiflu to him just in case but didnt even bother to check
UK girlband The Sugababes have been struck down with the deadly swine flu.
Bandmembers Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah have been put into quarantine after they developed symptoms of the virus.
Keisha, 24, admitted: "I definitely don't have swine flu, but the other girls are ill with it.
"We've had to cancel all our events for the next week or so while the girls get better.
"I can't believe I know someone who has swine flu. I'm sure we'll laugh when it's over."
The girls were due to meet with US music mogul Jay-Z this week to talk over promoting their new single Get Sexy in the States.
But they have been ordered to cancel all promotional duties on their new track for at least two weeks - including their slot at the Reading and Leeds Festivals at the weekend.
The girls signed for Jay-Z's new Roc-a-fella record label back in April, and it was the first time he had had chance to come over to the UK to meet with them.
A source said: "This is a massive blow to the girls.
"They were all geared up after their break to throw themselves into promoting the new material.
"But then Heidi fell ill and so did Amelle.
"They thought it was only a cold at first but they were so sick they couldn't even get off the couch, no matter how much they wanted to get back into work.
"The girls have been told by the doctor that they have all the symptoms of swine flu and they have been told to stay in, rest and stay away from people.
"Which means there is no way they will be able to meet up with Jay-Z while he is in town - it's too risky."
The swine flu virus, has so far infected over 125,000 people worldwide.

Oh please, 700 people in the WORLD have died in four months. Seasonal flu kills 12000 people in this country alone in one season.
well i have it, and the doctor has given me anything for it, bloody usesless NHS.
Aww, Bryan, I am sorry to hear this. Did you get tamiflu or something else? Hope you are better soon xxx
My cousin has it and she's really milking it. She can't be that ill if she can pose and pout for yet more photos then put them on facebook
they said to just take paracetmol as if it was any kind of flu. only high risk groups get the injection, which they dont have much of.
tbh this whole "deadly virus outbreak" theyre making it out to be really is just stupid. it's not as bad they're making it out to be.
The media are partly to blame for everybody thinking we're all going to die. They have the public running scared with the bird flu saga, which killed a few birds in Scotland and didn't cross into humans.
It's flu, just a different strain that we haven't come across before.
Aw Bryan hope you get better soon. get plenty of rest fluids and homemade soup we will look after you even if the crappy NHS can't.
I was discussing the amount of cases with my sister and she was disturb on the amount of people not getting the drugs or vacination against swine flu. I wasn't as the figures are not different to dying from normal flu. maybe this is just my opinion but I think that they are holding off given Tamiflu and the vacination as it is away to reduce the world population. those who have died from it have all had underline problems, people who are dependant on longterm care. If a number of the elderlay and those with health problems preventing them from working die then the revenue that pays towards providing care is reduced.
I do see your point Kath and I don't think anyone will ever come out and say "we're holding back on Tamiflu in the hope people will die and ease the burden on healthcare, benefits, pensions, food supplies etc." Putting it like that makes it sound like a conspiracy theory :p
The UK has the world's largest stockpile of Tamiflu and Relenza, enough for 80% of the population. The virus can mutate though so when the second wave comes later in the year it is likely to be different and nobody will have any immunity to it. If we use all the antivirals up now there won't be any when things get much worse. The vaccine will only protect against the current strain.
Therefore, Tamiflu is likely to be rationed and those with very minor symptoms and no underlying medical conditions might not get it.
I agree. Also the reason nobody is getting the vaccine is that it isn't ready yet..
Preventing sick people from getting treated in order to reduce world population is against the whole ethos of the NHS surely...lol
Okay maybe my imagination is running a little wild, but over the last few days with watching the news people who have contracted Swine Flu are not been given Tamiflu. If there is to be a more serious outbreak come the autumn as predicted surely they should be speeding up the process of creating a vaccination and distrubuting it to those most vunerable so the symptoms won't be as severe as anticipated but they're not. It's only 5 weeks on Tuesday until the 1st September.
I know no-one is going to admit that they are trying to reduce the population but I'm just thinking of the bigger picture. There is a global recession, there is less people in work> less people paying taxes and pension contributions> ect yet those most vunreable to this diesase are the ones who rely on taxes and global spending to care for them, but with more people been made redundant everyday the resources are reducing. If a Government can save revenue then I think that would consider it not just the UK but other countries as well.
They are testing the vaccine on volunteers in Australia at the moment. Personally its worrying they aren't making the other vaccine, or not enough of it, for the normal flu virus. We may be protected against Swine Flu, but then we will get loads of people getting normal flu.
I have some symptoms :ninja: I'm hoping it's just a cold.
3 people have swine flu at my work place :(
Followed by 15 people on my floor off sick with symptoms getting worried I will get it too
I've been told by various medical peeps that the best thing you can do if you have flu, is to gooo to bed and take aspirin...
though I would take a bottle or five of covonia with me too.
Take a bottle of brandy and a jar of vic to bed.
i reckon theyre saving most of the tamiflu and stuff for the autumn when more people are likely to get it. and arent they hoping to start vaccinating people in september?
how many in total has died from this now?
According to the BBC, there were 84 deaths in the UK to 1st October.
In Europe there have been at least 261 deaths and 63000 reported cases to 18th October according to the World Health Organisation
Worldwide 5000 people have died.
While we were on vacation/holiday I had a letter from our medical center that I qualify for free flu shots.. after I have that I can have the "swine/mexican flu" vacination,, ( 2 weeks after the reg.flu shot ) Tomorrow me and my partner are going in for the first shots..Not sure if I will have a reaction or not , 10 yrs ago I had a sore arm and mild flu symptoms,, I am 10 yrs older now so who knows how this OLD battered body will react :searchme:
I went to Mexico in July.
My mum caught swine flu (lol, i knew she would)
Me and my dad were around her and were not even affected by it.
My mum didn't even feel that bad.
She said that normal flu was worse.
Its all been made waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to big of a deal.
I have got Swine Flu.
Felt terrible today so my boyfriend rung that pandemic flu line number and I had majority of symptoms, so he was given a code so he could go collect the Tamiflu's from a local pharmacy.
It's awful, just awful!!
Poor you. I've had it recently, too, and I promise you it doesn't last long. You'll feel a lot better in a couple of days, especially with Tamiflu.
I hope so.
I don't like this feeling at all :-(
