Yup, even Jeremy Paxman looked pissed off last night when he had to report on the happenings on CBB. It shouldn't be a major issue - i.e. being raised in the house of commons, headline news etc, but what does it say about our society that the main talking point is what is happening in CBB? Channel 4 and Endemol know what they are doing and to them its a ratings war. They should have nipped it in the bud but as we know controversy is what makes the programme compulsive viewing for some.
The longer the programme goes on the more 'normal' people in the house become. Its very hard to disguise your personality/opinions for long and that is what we are seeing in the house now. I personally thought it was more bullying and girlie bitching that anything until I heard what Jade said last night.
What I find most interesting is the reverse racism that seems to go on these days from those from the indian and african/jamaican origins against the poles. Just goes to show that racism is well and alive - just that its practiced more these days by those that would be classed as second/third generation immigrants.
Political correctness in this country has gone mad IMO.
This should go on my list of things that annoy me but I hate people who claim not to be racist but make ridiculus sweeping statement about a race!! this is what is happening here be the white trash remark or the comment been made to Shipla. This never should go this far at all and should not be a main headline (maybe in entertainment section)
Like Em, I don't watch it but I have read it all on Sky and it just seems it is going this far for publicity sake!! Last year Jodie claims she was bullied and (not taken from what was said to shipla) very nasty remarks were made to her but it this because it was a white on white comment, it wasn't exploded. Would this have been as big if Shipla had made nasty comments about Jade? would it be main headlines or it racism a one way street and to keep the piece we ignore comment coming back the other way???
Exactly - this is all about ratings and this is why I hate this programme - they don't care about anyones feelings in there, as long as they make the headlines and win the ratings wars. This should not be headline news or the only thing on every television and radio station talk topics at the moment - people have been killed in today's high winds, but no doubt, the headline will now be with regards to Carphone Warehouse removing their sponsorship deal
This is what I wonder Siobhan - would it have been the main topic on everyones lips, if Shilpa had made racist remarks to Jade and as has been said already, Jermaines white trash statement has been totally ignored. Racisim is one and the same no matter who is saying it. But I still think its mostly more to do with saying as much as possible to "win" the argument, albeit in the wrong way.
I think the problem is going to be how Channel 4 and Endemol are portraying us as English people - what sort of view are nations around the world going to take of us, if this publicity that C4 seem to feel fit for broadcast is used.
This argument will not cease for a long time after CBB has finished, and I think that is exactly what Endemol/Channel 4 wanted.
I havent watched it either but its everywhere all over the papers. I think its more ignorance than racism.
i think a lot of it is jealously - shipla is stunning and she has real class, where as despite being a former beauty queen - dannielle really doesnt, jade still looks like the papers described her on bb2 (piggy face / kebab belly) and jo doesnt even register...................
that last post was mean - sorry jade fans!
summed it up quite well, Terry Christian on the radio this morning said he is loving watching the three of them throw there careers down the toilet.
jade or shipla up for chop
its not clear if the house nominated or c4 have done it
Channel 4 CEO Andy Duncan has issued a statement on the Celebrity Big Brother controversy. The statement in full:
"In the seven years it has been on air Big Brother has seldom been far from the headlines.
"The reason it commands so much attention, intentionally or unintentionally, is that it goes to the heart of who we are as individuals and as a society.
"The latest series of Celebrity Big Brother has strayed into particularly controversial territory – the issue of racism and whether or not it remains ingrained in British attitudes despite all the progress we have apparently made towards becoming a truly multi-cultural society.
"The level of complaint and comment shows the programme has touched a real nerve.
"The debate has been heated, the viewing has at times been uncomfortable but, in my view, it is unquestionably a good thing that the programme has raised these issues and provoked such a debate. These attitudes, however distasteful, do persist – we need to confront that truth.
"What constitutes racism is a complex question. We have been monitoring extremely carefully events in the house and have reached the view that we cannot with certainty say that the comments directed at Shilpa have been racially motivated or whether they stem from broader cultural and social differences.
"We have already intervened with Danielle and, as viewers will see tonight, again with Jade where we felt their comments might be construed to have racist overtones. Producers also spoke to Shilpa today who said she did not feel that behaviour towards her was racist.
"We will not hesitate to intervene again if apparently racist behaviour occurs.
"Big Brother’s unique strength is that it is ultimately the public who will decide whether or not the behaviour of certain contestants has been unacceptable.
"Tomorrow night Jade and Shilpa will face the public vote. The British public has the opportunity to cut through the claim and counter-claim and pass its judgement on the events of the last week.
In the last 25 years Channel 4 has undoubtedly played a major role as a broadcaster to inform and educate viewers about issues of race. This is a role that I intend Channel 4 to continue playing."
I haven't watched CBB for the last week, and i think part of the problem is the editing- it is done so certain things are blown out of proportion but it's good to see people have complained- at least someone is watching. however, i think BB should have been stopped by now as it always causes a stir. it seems jackiey started this and everyone else got on the band wagon
