Chapter 7
Sam caught Phil’s eye, as he was pushed through the doors leading to the cells. The moment the eye contact was broken, as Phil was obscured from her view, Sam made a sudden start in his direction. As she did, she felt strong hands grab her arms from behind, and whirled round to see Gina staring back at her.
“Leave him for now”, she said, as Sam turned back around to look at where Phil had been taken. “Come on”, she tried to coax Sam into turning her round in the direction of the Inspectors office. Sam was in a sort of trance, all she could see was that desperation in Phil’s eyes. “Come on”, Gina urged again.
Once inside her office, Gina closed the door behind them. This seemed to snap Sam out of her trance.
“Gina, what’s going on?” she asked, “Is there some sort of undercover operation going on here that someone forgot to tell me about?”
Gina gestured for Sam to sit down, as she walked around her desk and sat in her own seat.
“Gina?”
Gina hated to see Sam upset: she hated what she was about to tell her even more, but she wasn’t about to lie to the Sergeant, who was also a good friend.
“There’s no undercover operation Sam.”
“Then what the hell is going on, because unless I knew better, I would swear I just saw Phil being arrested?”
“I got a call from the DI at CPS about 5 minutes ago, a heads up if you will.”
Sam could feel her already racing heartbeat quicken even more. “A heads up about what?”
Gina looked up at Sam now, “There was some sort of accident up at Longmarsh. An inmate was stabbed, and taken to St Hughes fighting for his life. He regained consciousness half an hour ago.”
Sam frowned. “I still don’t see what any of this has to do with Phil.”
“Marty Johnson, the inmate who was stabbed, is saying that it was Phil who stabbed him.”
Sam, who had previously been standing, sunk down into the chair she had been leaning on. “What? But . . . he can’t . . . he wouldn’t . . . that’s impossible.” She looked up at Gina, her eyes pleading with her to agree.
“There’s no evidence to suggest he’s guilty so far. The knife used has been sent for forensics, and they’re still appealing for any witnesses in the prison who may have seen what happened.”
Sam was lost for words.
“Jack’s in with him now, taking his statement.”
Sam leapt out of her seat, “I want to see him.”
“Sam, do you think that’s a good idea?” Gina cautioned.
“I want to see him”, Sam repeated.
“Alright, I’ll see what I can do”, she promised, “Just stay here for the minute ok?”
Sam nodded and sat back down.
Out in the corridor, Gina saw Jack coming out of the cells.
“How is he?” she asked the DCI.
“I’m not sure to be honest”, he replied.
Gina looked away, “Has he said what happened?”
“Claims he found Johnson half dead, and got covered in blood, when Johnson fell on him, and he tried to help him. He said he shouted for help and that’s when they were found by the guard on duty”
Gina was always a little extra dubious when it came to Phil Hunter, and even though she didn’t really believe that he would go this far, she had to check. “Do you believe him?”
Jack answered, “Yeah I do, why?”
“Just checking we agree”, Gina told him. “Sam Nixon wants to see him.”
“He specifically said he didn’t want to see her.”
Gina was taken aback, “Why not?”
Jack shrugged, “Didn’t say.”

Yvonne turned the key in the lock of Phil Hunters cell. “10 minutes tops ok?”
Sam shot her a grateful look, “Thanks Yvonne.”
Yvonne smiled and made her way back to the booking in desk.
Sam stepped inside the cell to find Phil sat on the bed, his arms closed around his pulled up knees, on which his head rest.
Sam had to fight back tears, as she walked up to him, where he had obviously fallen asleep.
She touched the top of head, “You’ll get a crick in your neck sleeping like that”, she told him.
Phil jumped awake like he’d been shot. He noticed her, and pulled away from where she sat, trying to hide his face from view, as he didn’t want her to know that he’d been crying.
“I told Jack I didn’t want to see you”, he said, not unkindly.
“I know what you told Jack Phil, but I was so worried.”
“You should go”, he told her.
“Phil?” She couldn’t hold back the tears any longer, and one escaped to slide down her cheek, she failed in holding back a sniffle.
Upon hearing her crying, Phil turned back, and went to sit back down beside her, taking her hand in his own.
“Sam, I’m sorry, I just . . . I didn’t want you to see me here”, he looked around the cell, “Like this.”
Sam brought her hand up to touch his face, his eyes closing at the touch of her warm skin.
“I didn’t do it Sam”, he told her.
“She smiled at him, “I know.”
