DJ AM, the celebrity disc jockey who publicly acknowledged his history of drug addiction and had filmed a reality show in which he offered to help other addicts, was found dead in his apartment. He was 36.
Police found a crack pipe and prescription pills in the Manhattan apartment, said a law enforcement official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing. Paramedics had to break down the door before they found him, shirtless and wearing sweatpants, in his bed around 5:20 p.m. on Friday, the official said.
A friend had called police to say he was unable to get into the home in the trendy SoHo neighborhood. There was no evidence of foul play, and a medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
Last year, he was badly hurt in a South Carolina plane crash that killed four people and seriously injured rock musician Travis Barker.

MTV did not have an immediate comment on whether Goldstein’s show would air, but said in a statement that it “was honored to support him as he helped young people battle their own addictions.”

Macaulay Culkin is the father of Michael Jackson's youngest son.
The 'Home Alone' star - who became friends with Michael in 1990, when he was just 10 years old - reportedly donated sperm to create Prince Michael II, known as Blanket.
The sperm was then inserted into an unknown surrogate mother, and Blanket was born in 2002, when Macaulay was 22 years old.
An insider told Britain's Sun newspaper: "It is well known Jackson and Macaulay shared a unique bond.
"Now rumours are spreading like wildfire that Macaulay, who Jackson nicknamed Mack, is actually Blanket's biological dad."
Michael and Macaulay were close friends for years. The child star frequently visited the singer's Neverland ranch - where he raised eyebrows by sleeping in Michael's bed - and took the witness stand to defend him during his 2005 trial for child molestation.
Michael is said to have idolised Macaulay, and thought using his sperm to create a child would be the "next best thing" to being Macaulay's father.
The source added: "This isn't just chitter-chatter, even Culkin suspects he's Blanket's father. So many names have been mentioned as prospective dads, and this is probably the wackiest yet.
"But Jackson and Culkin were best friends. He was one of the few people Jackson really trusted and Mack never let him down. Really, Jackson idolised him - that's why he asked Mack to donate sperm.
"Deep down, I think he always wished Mack was his son. Creating Blanket was the next best thing."
Friends claim Michael - who died in June - was not the biological father of his other children Prince Michael I, 12, and Paris, 11.

I think everyone always knew that Michael Jacksons kids would never have a normal childhood, but I think they deserve some time away from the limelight to grieve for the man they called dad.

Jack Tweed has been arrested after a woman claimed she had been sexually assaulted, according to the Metropolitan Police.
The alleged assault took place in Redbridge, in north east London.
A police spokesman said: "A female in her late teens has made an allegation of sexual assault. The alleged incident occurred in the Redbridge area in the early hours of this morning. Two men in their 20s have been arrested in connection with the inquiry."
The widower of reality TV star Jade Goody, Jack Tweed has already spent 12 weeks in jail after he was found guilty of assaulting a taxi driver.
Tweed, whose wife died in March, was found guilty of the attack on Stephen Wilkins. He had denied it.
That was the second time in six months that the 22-year-old has been found guilty of assault. In September he was jailed for hitting a 16-year-old boy with a golf club, which he also denied.

Jack Tweed was charged with one count of rape today.
Jade Goody's widower was arrested after a 19-year-old female made allegations of sexual assault yesterday, reports The Mirror.
Tweed's spokesperson Mark Thomas refused to comment on the arrest, but has said that a lawyer had been appointed to represent the club promoter.
Tweed will appear at Redbridge Magistrates' Court in Ilford, Essex.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a third man aged 25 was arrested in addition to Tweed and one other individual last night.
Tweed is currently in custody at a police station in East London.

He was charged and is kept in custody until 21 September, another guy was charged with him but has been released on bail. Looks serious although Jack's lawyer has stated that they will fight this case.

Jane Fonda will marry for the fourth time, reports say.
According to the Daily Mail, the 71-year-old is engaged to music producer Richard Perry, who she met a year ago.
Fonda will reportedly invite her second and third husbands to the wedding and has said that she is planning an "unconventional union".
A source revealed: "She made the announcement during a dinner party at the Malibu home of Barbra Streisand and James Brolin, and now it's the biggest open secret in showbiz."
The insider added that Fonda and Perry are suited to each other.
"They fit like a glove, clearly love each other, and share a lot of common pastimes, including a keen interest in politics," the friend explained.

Transformers star Megan Fox says she suffers from psychological ailments and fears dying young in an interview with Wonderland magazine.
Us Weekly reports that Fox compares herself to Marilyn Monroe in the interview in the mag's September/October issue (which is not available online). "I could end up like that because I constantly struggle with the idea that I think I'm a borderline personality -- or that I have bouts of mild schizophrenia," she says. "I definitely have some kind of mental problem and I haven't pinpointed what it is."
In the same interview, Fox compares her Transformers director Michael Bay to Napoleon, saying his desire to have an "insane, infamous mad-men" reputation has put her life in danger. "He wants to be like Hitler on his sets, and he is," Fox says, "So he's a nightmare to work with."
"[Shia LeBeouf] and I almost die when we make a Transformers movie," she says. "He has you do some really insane things that insurance would never let you do."
Bay has not directly responded to Fox's comments, though Us Weekly points out that in July, the director said that Fox "says some ridiculous things" when she told reporters that Transformers was "not about acting."

no matter what katie will always get the bad press cos the papers have never liked her. Papers can make up whatever they want cos there will be idiots out there that beleive it.
In my opinion its their business. Katie is getting on with her life like any normal woman would wheras peter is using it as publicity for his music career. I do like both of them but dont like the fact that peter uses the kids. By wearing "team children" t-shirts n stuff its just childish.
Nicole Richie has given birth to a baby boy.
The Simple Life star, who checked into a Los Angeles area hospital on Monday, gave birth early this morning, according to an announcement on her website.
"In the middle of night, the very early hours of September 9, 2009, Sparrow James Midnight Madden was born to Nicole Richie and Joel Madden," it read.
"He weighs 7lbs 14oz. Nicole, Joel, Harlow and Sparrow are all doing well. Thank you for all of your good wishes."
Richie and partner Madden are already parents to 19-month-old daughter Harlow.
The actress recently said that she would love to get married to the Good Charlotte rocker.

Katherine Heigl and husband Josh Kelley are opening their home to a special needs baby from Korea.
The Grey's Anatomy star – whose sister Meg was adopted from the country - is yet to meet the girl.
‘They sent us a picture,’ says Katherine, 30. ‘They told us that it was a little girl and who she was and the information about six months ago.
'It was meant to take a long time. She is a special needs baby and because of that it all moved so much faster. They wanted to get her to us as quickly as possible.’
Katherine and Josh, 29, have already picked out a name for their new daughter.
‘I am naming her after my mother and sister — Nancy, Leigh,’ she says in an interview to air on The Ellen DeGeneres Show tomorrow.
‘So we call her Naleigh. We have to meet her first. We assume it’s a Naleigh.’
ITV has reportedly banned Ant and Dec from appearing on Jonathan Ross's BBC One chat show.
The broadcaster made the decision after the BBC ruled that Barbara Windsor couldn't appear on Piers Morgan's Life Stories on ITV, reports The Sun.
Ant and Dec had been due to appear on the show next week to promote their new autobiography.
A source told the paper: "Ant and Dec are livid. They really wanted to go on, have a laugh, plug their new book, talk about their new show and the next series of Saturday Night Takeaway.
"The BBC know an ITV show with Barbara would hurt them in the ratings so they've acted in this petulant way."
It's feared that the ban could lead to more of the big names from each channel being barred from appearing on rival stations.
This latest row comes just a day after ITV accused the BBC of 'aggressive' scheduling after it revealed that the first Saturday edition of Strictly Come Dancing will go head to head with The X Factor.

Irish actor Colin Farrell has got into an angry confrontation with a photographer at the premiere of his latest movie Triage.
Snappers wanted his sister Claudine to leave the red carpet so they could have a clear shot of the star. But the 33-year-old actor objected to their requests.
In a brief stand-off in Toronto, Farrell went nose-to-nose with one photographer Joe Alvarez and argued with him before retaining his composure.
London-based Mr Alvarez was among the photographers who had shouted at the star's entourage to move off the red carpet.
Mr Alvarez said: "With celebs you get a lot of hangers-on, PRs, everyone and their wives surrounding the stars and we are limited for space.
"I was just saying, 'please can everyone clear the carpet, move on'.
"He took it personal. He said, 'Do not shout at my sister like that, do not ever speak to my sister like that ever'."
The confrontation quickly passed, with Farrell returning to his film promotion duties before taking his seat at the Elgin Theatre in the Canadian city.
Triage is a film which investigates the psychological effects of war on a photojournalist.
Speaking minutes after the incident, the star said studying photojournalists had not affected his views in regards to showbiz photographers.
He said: "It is completely separate. I wouldn't ever compare, comparison is a dangerous business."
The actor stars alongside Sir Christopher Lee and Paz Vega in the movie.
