EMMERDALE bosses will kill off one of the soap's most loved characters while two weddings will take place during the 40th anniversary live episode.
The top male star, who we have agreed not to name, will be bumped off in spectacular style next month.
Bosses at the ITV1 soap are pulling out all the stops to make sure their celebrations go with a bang. Executive producer Stuart Blackburn has already revealed that two births and two weddings will take place.
But news of a death will come as a major shock to fans.
Hate Stuart said: "In our spectacular live episode viewers will be taken on a whirlwind journey, encompassing every life experience from the two cradles to the grave with love, hate and betrayal along the way.
"We want to avoid speculation as to which character dies but suffice to say it will have major, far-reaching repercussions."
Speaking about the soap hunk who will meet his maker, Stuart added: "The soap gods always get their man and this one has it coming!"
As well as the death, fans will see Declan Macey (Jason Merrells, 43) marrying Katie Sugden (Sammy Winward, 26) while Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter, 35) weds Dan Spencer (Liam Fox, 42).
Meanwhile, Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb, 24) and Gennie Walker (Sian Reese-Williams, 31) both go into labour.
Bosses are planning an ambitious hour of live TV which will see the soap filmed on the outside set.
That means the cast and crew will be at the mercy of the Yorkshire weather and bosses admit there's no back-up plan.
Rain Stuart added: "There's no way we can, it would be impossible.
"If it rains then everyone is going to get soaked and poor Sammy and Lucy's wedding dresses will be sodden."
Explaining his thoughts behind the live show, he added: "Life is about births, deaths and marriages.
"That's what it's all about, some of our most powerful memories come from those moments.
"So it seems really fitting that we encompass all of that in our 40th anniversary week.
"I'm so excited about what we have planned and I hope that fans will love it just as much.
"We hope that viewers who perhaps haven't seen Emmerdale for a while will watch and see what we are about.
"We not just about farms and sheep, there are really good storylines bubbling underneath.
"Our anniversary is going to be a week no-one will want to miss."
The live episode will air next month.
Sounds like it could Cain or Carl so
Emmerdale star Rik Makarem has expressed his excitement over the soap's upcoming live episode.
The ITV1 drama goes live for a one-off special next month as part of the programme's 40th anniversary celebrations.
Makarem's character Nikhil Sharma is among those taking centre stage in the big birthday week, as the businessman's partner Gennie Walker (Sian Reese-Williams) will go into labour.
Appearing on Daybreak today (September 19), Makarem explained that he is hoping to enjoy the experience of the challenging live broadcast.
He said: "[I'm] very excited. I think all the cast generally are quite pumped up about it. I think we're all privileged and quite honoured to be part of that big celebration, that milestone.
"And I've definitely got to say this - there's no tricks with this live episode. [It's a] tribute to the creative team and the production team - we're really going for hearty storylines."
In the meantime, this week's episodes see Nikhil attempt to help Gennie prepare for motherhood by giving her a learning aid baby to look after.
Makarem commented: "You know, this is his way of dealing with it. For Nikhil, it's a NASA mission to become a father, and he needs to get every base covered. If this is going to make Gennie become a good mum and help her confidence, then this is what he's going to do!"
Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1.
Emmerdale's Sian Reese-Williams has confirmed that Gennie Walker will give birth during next month's live episode.
Reese-Williams revealed that her character, who is engaged to factory partner Nikhil Sharma (Rik Makarem), will go into labour on the Dales.
"I'm not allowed to say too much about how dramatic it is, but it's outside. And it all happens very quickly," she told the Daily Star newspaper.
The actress also joked: "Apparently you sound like a cow when you're doing it, so I'm just going to moo a bit and it will be fine."
However, the star also admitted that she is "nervous" about filming the scenes, adding: "I've been watching a lot of One Born Every Minute for tips."
Speaking more generally about Gennie's pregnancy storyline, she reflected: "This has put me off having kids. This is enough for me, at least I can take the bump off and give the baby back.
"I did get attached to it though, it was like walking around with a cushion all day, I kept hugging it.
"And my body thought I was pregnant, it was really weird. I was eating more and not moving. I need to go on a post-baby diet!"
Jennie McAlpine performed soap's first live birth as Fiz Brown for Coronation Street's 50th anniversary, and EastEnders star Danielle Harold became the second actress to take on the challenge in a special segment of Billy Mitchell's Olympic episode.
Emmerdale star Adam Thomas has said that the mystery cast member who leaves the soap during the upcoming live episode will be missed on set.
Show bosses recently confirmed that one character will be killed off when Emmerdale goes live for its 40th anniversary next month, leading to speculation over which village resident is about to meet their maker.
Thomas, who plays Adam Barton, told Digital Spy that it will be sad to say goodbye to the actor in question.
He explained: "Without a shadow of a doubt we'll miss this person - of course. When someone does leave, it's definitely a big thing for us because we all work so closely on Emmerdale and we all have so many scenes together."
The 25-year-old also promised that viewers can expect big things from the special live broadcast.
He said: "It's definitely going to be nerve-wracking, but once we've done it, we're all going to be so proud that we've pulled something off that's as spectacular as this episode is going to be. It's just going to be momentous afterwards.
"It's definitely worth it. I've got about one line - they don't trust me!"
^ Does that mean it aint Adam so, pity he is a crap character

Emmerdale has released a special trailer to promote its 40th anniversary week next month.
To be screened on ITV1 from now until October 15, the preview features the soap's popular characters lined up on the stormy Dales.
Major characters featured include a smug-faced Cain Dingle and couple Jai and Charity Sharma.
Chas Dingle and Dan Spencer stand alongside Debbie Dingle and Cameron Murray, while "evil" Carl King stands forlorn.
Finally, Declan Macey and Katie Sugden are seen kissing to the disgust of Declan's half-sister Megan.
Emmerdale's birthday week will also feature an hour-long live episode, for which both a birth and a death have been confirmed.
I think it IS adam. Only one to comment on character leaving trying to throw folk off scent. Also he has to have a comeuppance because of the blame that Aaron took for what Adam tried to do to Cain. I think it all fits quite nicely. Also remember reading ages ago that the Bartons were supposed to be going - all of them - with possible exception of Moira. Again - this would fit nicely. So for me - it's Adam or Carl.
BTW I love that trailer. The confetti explosions are a novel idea.
I dont want it to be Cain or Carl or even Zak or Ashley (I know Zak and Ashley are not hunks but outside bets as well I think it could be)
Maybe our definition of what is a hunk is different from theirs: ie Maybe, in their deluded minds, they consider Robbie to be "hunk material" in which case Robbie would be in the frame for death.
Therefore I think it's Robbie, or Adam, or Carl or Cameron OR of course it could always be - at a push David, or Jai or Declan or Nikhil (definitely ruling out Sandy, Rodney, Ashley, Alan, Paddy, Dan, Eric, Jimmy, Zak, Rishi and Sam Dingle) real outsiders Bob, Marlon,
Got it - it's Alex????????

The should crash a plane on the Dales again get rid of quite a few :p
Emmerdale star Lucy Pargeter has admitted that her character Chas Dingle still has feelings for ex-fiancé Carl King.
Chas is currently going through a tough time on screen as Carl (Tom Lister) is blackmailing her after uncovering her affair with Cameron Murray.
Next week's Emmerdale episodes see a twist, however, as Carl finally gets his money and confesses that it was never about the cash as he is still in love with Chas.
Pargeter told Inside Soap: "Carl admits that he still loves her and wants to be with her. And I think that, deep down, Chas knows she still has feelings for him too. There's still a lot of chemistry between them.
"She's terrified of what may happen. Carl is becoming more intense and involved in her life again. He's getting obsessed with her."
As Chas's dramas with Carl and Cameron are coinciding with her plans to marry Dan Spencer, she currently has three significant men in her life in the build-up to Emmerdale's 40th anniversary celebrations next month.
Pargeter added: "I have absolutely no idea how Chas will manage to get herself out of this nightmare. I reckon it can only end in tears."
Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1.
Emmerdale bosses have today (September 26) released a new promotional trailer for the soap's 40th anniversary celebrations.
The video recaps some of the recent dramas in the village and offers a small glimpse of what's to come in forthcoming episodes.

Upcoming scenes featured include Declan's big festival at Home Farm, which will air in the week before the anniversary episodes themselves.
Meanwhile, Chas and Debbie Dingle feature heavily in the preview, with their storylines expected to come to a head in time for the birthday week.
Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1.
Loose Women will help to celebrate Emmerdale's 40th anniversary with a special 'Divas of the Dales' week, it has been announced.
Cast members past and present will appear as panellists on the ITV1 daytime show throughout next week, revealing all about their time in Emmerdale as well as sharing their thoughts on the topics of the day.
Each day from October 1 to 5, a different Emmerdale star will join the regular panel.
Gaynor Faye (Megan Macey), Claire King (Kim Tate), Sheree Murphy (Tricia Dingle), Siân Reeves (Sally Spode) and Lorraine Chase (Steph Forsythe) are the familiar soap faces who have signed up for the shows.
Loose Women's executive producer Sharon Powers commented: "I'm really looking forward to watching five iconic Emmerdale actresses joining the real-life soap opera that is Loose Women. I can't wait to hear all the gossip from the Dales, plus new takes on the topics of the day."
Emmerdale reaches its 40th birthday next month with a dramatic week of episodes including two births, two weddings, a death and a live episode.
Who is that at 3:02 in hosp? is it Chas?
...
Call me a cynical bitch, regardless of whatever soap does the live episode, presumably for the sake of continuity, the subsequent episodes have already been recorded. Thus making a bit of a mockery of all the 'nobody knows what's happening' PR bumph.
Emmerdale Live's director Tony Prescott has given advice to the soap's cast ahead of their roles in the special episode.
Prescott believes that actors should focus their performance on their co-stars rather than become "lost" by thinking about the viewers watching on TV.
The filmmaker, who shot Coronation Street's 50th anniversary two years ago, told the Yorkshire Post: "Forget about the audience at home, play to your colleagues and crew. This is the normal way you would play this scene.
"Forget the millions. If you start bringing that into your head then you're lost. I know they can pull it off, they're at the peak of their game."
Reflecting on the scale of the live episode, Prescott added: "The biggest challenge for me is managing the anxiety! But by the time we're on air my job's done. By then I will have described on paper every single shot. The vision mixer will follow the camera script and pull the whole thing together.
"It's not enough just to pull this live hour off, we've got to make sure the subsequent episodes are as good. What I pray and hope is that we do Emmerdale justice. I'm a huge fan and I really want this to work."
The show will use 61 cast members and 350 extras and is expected to feature a birth and a death for the hour-long live instalment which is to be shot entirely on-location.

Does anyone know yet when the extra five 40th anniversary specials will be on?
Emmerdale stars have begun rehearsing for the soap's upcoming live episode.
Cast and crew had their first practice runs yesterday (October 2) ahead of the hour-long 40th anniversary special, which will air on ITV1 later this month.
Lucy Pargeter, who plays Chas Dingle, tweeted last night: "#EmmerdaleLive 1st day of rehearsals done!!!!! WOW, OUCH and hope your gonna love it??? And relax…"
Meanwhile, Sian Reese-Williams - better known as Gennie Walker - confessed: "I think it's hit me today. YIKES."
The Emmerdale team will have 11 days of rehearsals for the live episode in total, working for 10 hours across each of the days.
61 cast members are involved in the challenging broadcast, while 350 supporting artistes will also be required.
Additionally, 70 crew members will be working - almost double the number for a regular Emmerdale shooting day.
Emmerdale Live director Tony Prescott commented: "The problem we have with trying to create a rehearsal schedule for something like this is that Emmerdale is a serial drama. If we take that time out of the schedule, when do the other episodes get made?
"It would be nice to have a lot more time to rehearse, but [series producer] Stuart Blackburn has distinctly said, 'There is no point in doing a live and getting an audience bounce of millions if we don't produce the same drama the following night'.
"Producing the drama that will play out following the live is just as important as the live."
Emmerdale's 40th anniversary week kicks off on Monday, October 15 and show bosses have confirmed that a popular character will be killed off in the live episode.
I've always wanted Chas and Carl to get back together but as he seems like the most likely to die it is looking increasingly unlikely :'( I hate Debbie and Rachel if only they would kill them off instead.
Emmerdale at 40
Episode: 1 of 5
Thursday, 18 October 2012, 8:30PM - 9:00PM
As one of Britain’s best-loved soaps turns 40, this all-new series for ITV takes a look back at the most dramatic, moving, shocking and amusing storylines the show has witnessed.
Spilt into five parts, the series looks at:
• The Headline Makers
• The Affairs
• The Crimes
• The Weddings
• The Woolpack
Narrated by Gaynor Faye, each thirty-minute show is packed with the soap’s most memorable scenes and exclusive interviews with actors both past and present who give their views on the soap’s best plots, stunts, romances and scandals.
Episode One – The Headline Makers
Over the years, Emmerdale has never shied away from plots that grab the headlines and this episode takes a look back at the storylines that captured the attention of the nation and the press.
In 2006, Emmerdale launched one of the biggest whodunits in soap history when Tom King was murdered. Producers decided to put several characters in the frame and cast members explain that even they weren’t told who the murderer was. Each actor was filmed murdering Tom to keep the true killer a secret until the last possible moment.
Ken Farrington, who played Tom King, explains: “I had to do it 11 times, with 11 people, through the same bloody window.”
Fans and the press were left guessing who the murderer was and the soap made history as it posted all of the endings on the show’s website.
Another gripping plot which hit the headlines was the story of Jackson Walsh who was left paralysed in a train accident. Viewers were gripped as Jackson struggled to live with his condition and eventually decided to end his own life.
Jackson was seen with his mother and boyfriend as he took the medicine that would end his life. Mark Silcock, who played Jackson, tells the programme: “Jackson’s last scenes weren’t romantic in anyway whatsoever. The last episode was very horrible.”
In 1993 both Frank Tate and the viewers were left stunned when Zoe Tate announced that she was a lesbian. After several one-night stands with men, Zoe realised it was women she preferred and decided to tell her old-fashioned, homophobic father.
Leah Bracknell, who played Zoe, tells the programme about the moment she discovered her character was going to realise she was gay. She says: “I was a little taken aback. I burst out laughing, I thought they were joking. It certainly caused a stir when it got out. It was ground-breaking at the time. I think one forgets as there are lots more on television now with gay and lesbian storylines.
“People have since come up to me and said they were teenagers at the time and it really helped them as it was the nearest thing to what they were going through.”
Another woman to rock the quiet Yorkshire village was Sadie King, played by Patsy Kensit. The glamour puss caught the eye of the villagers and the press when she flew in in a helicopter and emerged head-to-foot in fur.
Jeff Hordley, who plays Cain Dingle, tells the programme: “Patsy was such a legend from the past. When I was a younger man I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, Patsy Kensit.’”
Viewers were gripped as Sadie immediately locked horns with Charity and the pair sent sparks flying in every scene. Sadie even pushed Charity down the stairs.
Emma Atkins, who plays Charity Sharma, says: “When I got the scripts I was thinking, ‘This is gold dust.’ It’s brilliant to play. I had to do all these arguments with Sadie with a neck brace on. Being able to do that constantly with Patsy, we had such a laugh.”
In 2008, the soap hit the headlines for a much more sombre reason, when it covered the cot-death of Ashley and Laurel’s baby, Daniel.
Emmerdale at 40 shows the harrowing moment when Laurel discovers her son has stopped breathing.
John Middleton, who plays Ashley, tells the programme: “Charlotte was absolutely extraordinary that day. It was a performance I have never seen from anybody. I’ve never been in a story before or since that had such a tremendous response from the public.”
Charlotte Bellamy, who plays Laurel, added: “People would come up to me and they’d want to talk about their experiences.”
Emmerdale at 40 is produced by Becky Sawle for Shiver. The series producer is Yvette Lyons and the executive producer is Mark Robinson.
