Chapter 5
Sam woke up with a smile on her face. She’d been dreaming about her and Phil and how they’d . . .
Wait a minute, she thought, that wasn’t a dream.
Last night came flooding back to her, and her smile grew wider and wider. Now fully awake yet, she rolled over and leant over to put an arm around Phil. However, all she grasped was more duvet. A bit surprised by this, she was now fully awake, up and dressed in her nightgown in a matter of seconds.
As she made her way down the stairs, she was relieved to hear the sound of the toaster pop, and plate’s rattling.
She leant against the doorframe of her kitchen for a moment, watching Phil as, with his back to her, he tried to juggle hot toast and a mug full of coffee at the same time.
When he managed to drop the toast, Sam couldn’t help a little giggle, and Phil turned in surprise to see her standing there.
“Sam, what are you doing? I was going to bring this up to you”, he scolded her, gesturing to a tray on the side which held a mug of coffee, a slice of toast and the morning newspaper.
“For me?” she asked, happy that he had once again proven her point that he was more than capable of being thoughtful when he wanted to be.
“Well, the toast may be a little cold now, I did make it a while ago, but then the kettle took ages, and I got the newspaper stuck in the letterbox . . .” He picked up the paper, which Sam could now see was full of holes and tears.
Sam could see the look of embarrassment on his face and went to reassure him with a soft kiss.
“Thank-you”, she told him, before he leant down for another kiss, this one more lingering. Before it deepened, Sam pulled back slightly.
“What’s wrong?” Phil asked her.
“It’s just, Phil, are you sure you’re . . . ok?”
“Never better”, he told her before leaning in for yet another kiss.
Sam took a step back, “No Phil, I mean really. You’ve only just . . . well, you and Cindy . . .”
“Are well and truly in the past”, he assured her. “Sam, I’ve never been happier.”
“It's just, when i woke up this morning and you weren't there?" She shrugged, "I don't know, i guess i panicked a little bit. I just don’t want you to feel like . . .?” She couldn’t seem to find the right words.
“What? Like I’ve got the most beautiful girlfriend in the world? That I care about her more than she knows. Sam, i'm afraid to say i'm not going anywhere.”
Suddenly, a terrible thought occurred to him, “That is, if you’re ok with what happened last night. I don’t want you to feel under pressure or anything.”
Sam was still glowing from being referred to as Phil’s ‘girlfriend’, and decided to silence him with a kiss.
“Come on”, she said, noticing the time, “let’s go and get ready for work”.
Phil groaned and pulled a face, “Do we have to go in today? We could call in sick”, he suggested.
“Both of us?” Sam asked, “Yeah, like that wouldn’t be suspicious enough. Anyway, what’s the matter? Is the prospect of having to spend an entire day working with me too much for you to handle?” She raised an eyebrow, as if daring him to agree.
He knew better than to even try, “Good point”, he remarked, before placing his mug down on the worktop, walking past Sam, before suddenly racing for stairs and then calling “Beat you to the shower.”
Sam gave chase, but Phil had had a head start and won by a mile. By the time she reached the top of the stairs, Phil had already locked the bathroom door.
“That’s not fair”, she called, “It’s my bathroom.”
Sam heard the bolt being pulled back, as Phil popped his head round the door to give a cheeky grin, “We could always share”, he suggested.
Sam made as if she was disgusted at the idea, tutting, rolling her eyes and muttering, “Always the same”, before smiling and pushing him back into the bathroom, closing and bolting the door behind them.

Chapter 6
Hours later, both Phil and Sam had been working on a case involving rather vicious assaults on elderly women.
However, Jack had uncovered a possible new lead in Smithy’s case, and had recruited Phil, Zain and Mickey to help try and prove their Sergeant innocent.
Sam was a little disappointed at being split up from Phil, but knew it was for a good cause. She had asked new PC, Emma Keane to help her, as she had helped with the initial arrest, and appeared to have made good relations with one of the victims in particular.
Having just gotten a full confession out of the suspect, full if not necessarily 100% by the book, Sam was on her way back up to CID when several officers including Jack and Neil rushed past her.
“Gov, what’s going on?” she asked, rather puzzled.
“There’s been some kind of accident up at Longmarsh, we have to get up there right away.”
Sam’s heart skipped a beat. Instinctively, her first thought was “Phil? Is he ok?”
“We’re not sure”
Then she realised dhow she must have sounded and tried to cover her tracks a little. “And Zain and Mickey?”
“We really don’t know much, we’re on our way down there now.”
“Do you want me to come with you?” Sam asked, just wanting to know that Phil was ok.
“No”, Neil spoke up, “Sam, I need you to stay here and hold the fort, We’ve got enough officers already on the way.”
“Gov”, she answered, although privately upset at his refusal.
Jack seemed a little softer; “We’ll let you know the situation as soon as we do Sam.”
Sam stood on the stairs watching as every assigned officer left the building. For a little moment, she couldn’t move.
Phil, she thought, what if something terrible happened?
She shook her head, no, she wouldn’t even think that way, she told herself, climbing the remaining stairs back up to CID.
As Marty Johnson was wheeled out of Long marsh on a stretcher, Jack went back inside to find out what had happened.
“So?” he asked the two policemen who stood in front of him. Zain had gone with Johnson to monitor his condition and keep Jack up to speed. “What the hell happened here?”
Silence.
Jack rarely lost his temper, but he was pretty close right at this moment.
“Well? Somebody had better explain to me how I send three coppers to investigate a great lead, and an inmate ends up with a 6 inch hole in his gut.”
He looked from Phil, who was sat on a chair, covered in Johnson’s blood, and Mickey, who stood with his arms folded.
“Mickey?”
“We got here and the guards let us in. They kicked Johnson out of his cell, so we could search it properly.”
“And?”
“While we were in there, we heard a commotion come from another part of the prison, so Phil went to check it out.”
“You and Zain stayed in the cell?”
“Gov”, he answered.
He looked down at the still, blood-soaked Phil. “Phil?”
“I didn’t do it”, was all he said.
“No-ones saying you did anything Phil, but we need to know what happened.”
“We heard then noise, so I went downstairs. The guards were busy breaking up a fight in the canteen, when I noticed Johnson disappear. One minute he was there and the next he was gone. So I tried to find him. He was in the shower block. He had his back to me. I walked in and as I got closer, I could see that there was blood on the floor. I rushed towards him and he just collapsed.”
He looked up at Jack, “That’s when I shouted for help and the guards arrived. I swear I didn’t do it.”
“You didn’t see anyone else in the showers?”
“No.”
“You’re sure?
At Phil’s nod, Jack told him, “Alright then Phil, lets get you back to the station so you can get cleaned up.”
Phil was still in a kind of daze when the arrived back at the station about half an hour later. Just as they got through the main doors, Jack’s phone rang and the caller ID identified it as Zain.
“Zain? How is he?”
“Good and bad”, Zain answered. “The good news is he’s regained consciousness. The bad news is he’s blaming Phil for everything, says he wants to make a formal complaint”.
Sam was on her way to brief Gina about the suspect she had arrested earlier for the muggings and to praise PC Keane’s hard work, when she heard somewhat of a commotion at the cells. Walking straight past Gina’s office, her heart gave that little jump it did whenever she saw Phil, who was stood with Jack, DCI Keane, Mickey and June behind the booking-in desk.
That little jump of her heart quickly turned to pounding as she got close enough to hear what was being said.
Jack was apologising to Phil, “I’m sorry Phil, there’s nothing we can do at the moment.”
Sam was shocked to see DCI Keane walk up and take Phil by the arm, “Phillip Hunter, I’m arresting you on suspicion of attempted murder, you do not have to say anything . . . anything you do say may be given in evidence.”
OMIGOD!! You mean girl! Nah, it's good really, if he's found guilty though, ooh you may see my angry side. lol. Aw, it's so wicked and pretty sad, again aww. You can probably guess, and hope, that Sam's gonna get Phil freed, better do!

omg! nooo! phil! you can;t do this lol!
