Watson was due to undergo surgery to remove the tumour at 0730 GMT at the Alexandra private hospital in Cheshire.
The singer, 40, was recording on Thursday when he was taken ill. He had a benign brain tumour removed a year ago after falling ill in the US.
The Salford-born tenor, who used to be a factory worker before he turned to singing, has sold more than four million albums worldwide.
'Complex surgery'
A spokeswoman for the hospital in Cheadle confirmed that Watson was admitted on Wednesday afternoon.
"Russell Watson is at the Alexandra Hospital. He came in yesterday afternoon. No other information can be given at this time."
She said the hospital was used to doing "complex surgery".
Watson's agent, Richard Thompson, described the tumour as "major".
"Our thoughts are with Russell and his family," he added.
The singer had an emergency operation to remove a benign brain tumour in September 2006.
The operation to remove the tumour, called a pituitary adenoma, took place at St George's Hospital in south London.
He recovered but was forced to cancel television appearances and postpone a UK tour.
His latest album, Outside In, is due for release on 26 November.
Watson found fame after the chairman of Manchester United invited him to sing Nessun Dorma ahead of the football team's last match of the season in 1999. Watson got a standing ovation and later landed a recording contract.
Russell Watson's voice may have been damaged by his emergency brain surgery last week.
The opera singer underwent surgery last Thursday after he fell ill in the recording studio and an MRI scan showed he had a brain tumour.
Surgeons had hoped they could operate on the tumour through his nose, but Watson still has scar tissue from two golf-ball sized tumours he suffered a year ago, so they were forced to enter via his mouth.
Richard Thompson, the singer's manager, told The Times: "There was some concern because when he came out of theatre he was having trouble speaking, but he's speaking normally now.
"It is a worry, but we don't know how much of a worry. When he had the operation a year ago we didn't want to go through the mouth for obvious reasons, but there was no option this time.
"He's got stitches in his mouth and they'll need to heal. But he will be singing again."
Russell Watson has said that he is happy to be alive after undergoing surgery for a brain tumour.
The singer had a three-hour operation at the Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle on Thursday, after collapsing in the recording studio.
Doctors had intially feared the procedure would damage his voice after doctors were forced to operate via his mouth.
Speaking outside the hospital, Watson said: "I'm just happy to be alive and be with my children. I'm very emotional right now.
"It's my daughter's birthday, she's 13, and I didn't think I'd get to see that."
Russell has returned to his home in Wilmslow but will now undergo months of radiotherapy.
Victoria: David colour codes fridge
Victoria Beckham has revealed that husband David's obsessive-compulsive disorder has become so bad that he now colour codes their fridge.
The Spice Girl also claimed that Beckham has to vacuum in straight lines and wear a pinafore apron while he is doing so.
Victoria was being interviewed by an American radio station when she revealed the footballer's obsessions, saying: "David is very, very tidy and I am not. Even our fridge is colour coded.
"I am creative, I have clothes all over the place. If he does the cleaning, he vacuums in straight lines - in a pinny.
"And if anyone walks around after he's done it, he gets funny."
David admitted to having the disorder during an interview last year, revealing that he has to count clothes and pile magazines up in straight lines.
Hilton threatens to sue porn shop
Paris Hilton has threatened to sue a Toronto porn shop after spotting cardboard cut-outs of herself advertising her sex tape.
Employees claimed the socialite "burst" into the store in a skeleton costume on October 24 and demanded they tear down posters promoting One Night In Paris.
CCTV footage of the outburst on TMZ shows Hilton asking for the manager before telling a member of staff: "You can't use my image in a porn store. I'm going to call my lawyer and sue the ******* out of this place if you don't take them down right now. I really want them down because they're mean and it's not right. I really mean it. This is disgusting. I want them down now or I'm calling the *******ing cops."
She then tore down two cut-outs of herself before walking out of the store.
The owner has alleged that a man calling himself Hilton's manager later entered the shop and threatened to sue him for defamation of character if the CCTV footage was leaked.
Hilton was in the Canadian city shooting new movie Repo: The Genetic Opera.
Goody: 'I thought I had bowel cancer'
Jade Goody has revealed that she thought she had bowel cancer because she was taking too many slimming pills.
The ex-Big Brother housemate said she has had four blood transfusions after taking a cocktail of diet pills, water tablets and laxatives in a bid to lose weight.
She told ITV1's This Morning: "When I was taking the slimming pills and the laxatives, it tells your bowel to stop and it does the work for you. So now my bowel collapses every now and then, it just forgets how to work and the pain is awful.
"I've had two blood transfusions where I've fainted, once on a television show and once just in a toilet. After I had both of my children I had to have another two blood transfusions because my blood clotting cells and hormone cells were extremely low."
The 26-year-old explained that she regularly took twice the recommended dosage and flew to LA to buy stronger pills, paying up to £300 for a small bottle.
But she denied admitting her addiction in an attempt to gain public sympathy, saying: "I've never been one of these people that's like, 'Yeah, pay me and I'll talk about an eating disorder' or 'I'm not getting in much magazines so I'll talk about my slimming pill disaster'."
Goody vowed to steer clear of the tablets in an interview last month, saying: "I've done so much damage to my body through taking the pills and making myself sick. I've gone down that road and don't want to go back."

Kylie ditches 2008 tour plans
Kylie Minogue has scrapped plans for a 40th birthday tour next year.
The popstar was reported to be preparing for some concerts in 2008 after her creative director William Baker claimed they had started rehearsals.
However, the singer now insists she will not be playing because she is not yet fit enough to cope with the rigours of touring following her recovery from breast cancer.
She told the Daily Mail: "The tour is not going to happen, it is far too soon. I can't do it next year.
"It kind of breaks my heart because that is what I'm in this business for. Not being able to go ahead with my plans is a real downer.
"Every woman has to face up to new priorities, near the top is health. I take my health very seriously but not obsessively. Everything is about pacing yourself."
