YAY!!! Two chapters at once! Wkd!
Chapter 3
Sam noticed that Phil had a kind of . . . confused look on his face when he walked back into CID later on that day.
She walked over to his desk, where he was sat chewing on the end of a pen, and perched on the edge.
“Hey”, she greeted him, “Everything ok?”
“Yeah”, he replied, taking a momentary pause in the pen chewing to glance up at her, before realising what he’d been doing and placing the pen on his desk, “I was just thinking.”
Sam struggled to hold back a little giggle. “Careful Phil.”
Once again, he looked up at her, “What? Why?” he asked, a little worried.
She lent down to scrutinise his face. “I think you’re getting wrinkles”, she told him, as seriously as she could manage.
Phil gave her a sarcastic ‘very funny’ smile, before Sam slapped him on the arm playfully. “Cheer up, what’s wrong anyway?”
“Gina’s been giving me funny looks all morning and then when I suggested that we would take over a serious assault case from Steve and Dan, she refused and said I should work on it with Mickey. Do you think I’ve done something to upset her?”
Sam had been listening to Phil’s story with some amusement, and Phil noticed her smile.
“It’s not funny Sam, I really think I’ve done something to offend her.”
Sam was still trying to control her giggles, “Sorry Phil, it’s just that . . . “
“What?” he pressed.
“Well, I think it might be my fault.”
“What? How can it be your fault?”
“Well, people saw us come into work together this morning and people were talking, so when she called me into her office, I just . . . put her straight.”
“What did you say?”
“That you stayed in my spare room last night, and that we talked and . . .”
“Oh great”, Phil remarked, “That’s why she wanted to keep us apart. She probably thinks I’m trying to come onto you again or something.”
“And are you?” Sam asked with a mischievous smile.
“Phil noticed the gleam in her eye, and couldn’t resist, “Would it be such a bad thing if I was?” he replied.
Sam felt her body lean forwards before she had time to process the action. They were so close, almost touching, when Mickey popped his head round the doors and shouted, “Come on Phil, the victims come round at St Hughes and the doctors have said she’s fit enough to be interviewed.”
After jumping apart slightly at the little interruption, Phil replied, “Yeah, sure, I’ll be there in a minute.”
“Meet you in the car.” Mickey left to make his way down to the car park.
“We’ll talk later”, Phil told Sam, before grabbing his jack et of the back of his chair and following Mickey out of the double doors of CID.
Sam walked over to her own desk, feeling a little light headed about what had just happened.
Did I really just nearly kiss Phil?
“Sorry to interrupt back there Sarge”, Mickey apologised to Phil as he climbed into the car.
“It’s fine”, Phil snapped, a little harsher than he meant to.
“So . . . ?” Mickey probed.
“So what?” Phil questioned.
“So, what’s going on between you and Sam?”
“Nothing, and that’s DS Nixon to you.”
“Sorry Sarge, I was only asking.”
“Mickey do me a favour and just drive the car ok?”
“Whatever.”
Chapter 4
Sam jumped slightly, as her mobile phone bleeped to indicate she had received a text message.
Glad for the moments break from her paperwork, she reached down to retrieve the phone from her bag. Opening up the new message, she read
Hi Sam, its Phil. Do u want 2 go 4 a drink 2night and we can tlk about what happened? Tb x
She was suddenly nervous and excited at the same time. She must have had an insane grin plastered all over her face, as DC Masters approached her Sergeant asking, “Somebody special?”
“Sam jumped a little, closing the phone and placing it on her desk. “Oh no, not really” she lied. “Just an old friend wanting to go for a drink tonight.”
Well, that’s not a total lie, she told herself; Phil is a friend, although after what happened today maybe he could be more than just a friend. But wait, she suddenly had a very bad feeling, what if he wants to meet tonight to tell me it was a mistake, him nearly kissing me, that he wants to forget it. After all the times I’ve rejected him, I wouldn’t blame him.
Jo interrupted her thoughts once again. “Liar” she said, before returning to her own desk, obviously content to leave the subject for now.
Later on in the pub . . .
Phil got to his feet when he saw Samantha walk in, trying not to notice how she seemed to just light up any room she entered, even a poky, smelly, smoky pub such as this one. His heart did a little jump at seeing her, this beautiful women whom he had adored for so long from afar.
Sam noticed him, and made her way over to him, trying to give away how nervous she was. She knew she was being stupid, but there was just something about Phil Hunter that made her feel like a teenager again; all hormones and adrenaline. She was constantly trying to maintain a serious exterior, but wasn’t always sure how she did at pulling it off.
“Hey”, she greeted him.
“Hey”, he replied, showing her to the table he had found a couple of minutes before she arrived, “You want a drink?”
“Sure, I’ll have a gin and tonic please.”
A few minutes later, Phil had bought the drinks and they were happily sat, talking about anything but what was really on both their minds.
Several moments later, during a moment of uncomfortable silence, Phil decided to take the plunge. “Sam, listen, about what happened earlier, I’m sorry . . . “
“You are?” Sam asked, before Phil could complete his sentence.
“I didn’t mean to embarrass you or . . . “
“You didn’t”, she told him, smiling at his concern for her status. “See, I told Gina you had a sensitive side.”
“You did what?” he exclaimed, horrified at the thought.
“Never mind, it doesn’t matter. I thought you’d asked me here to tell me it was a mistake and that you just wanted to forget it.”
“You what? Are you kidding me? I thought I’d upset you. So, you don’t mind about before . . . what happened when we . . . nearly . . . you know.”
Sam was quite amused at seeing Phil Hunter lost for words, and smiled before telling him, “There was just one problem.”
“Oh yeah?” he asked, “And what was that?”
She placed her drink down on the table, before leaning into him “We didn’t get to finish it.”
As she leant further in, and their lips met in a gentle kiss, Sam felt a shiver run down her spine at the effect the contact had on her.
Phil couldn’t believe how soft Sam’s touch was.
As the kiss deepened, becoming more and more passionate, Phil cupped Sam’s cheek, while she placed a hand on his muscular chest.
Sam had gone all weak at the knee’s and it was a good thing she was already sat down, otherwise she was afraid she may have collapsed.
Phil was totally absorbed in this woman in front of him, pressing her body against his own. She was gentle, yet full of passion, and he could feel his own passion rising, before the two broke apart, gasping for breath.
“Wow”, Phil exclaimed, before he could stop himself.
“Wow yourself”, Sam replied.
“Come on”, Sam gestured towards the door, “Let’s go back to mine.”
Phil hesitated, “Sam, are you sure?”
Sam kissed him again, putting off any protests he may have had.
“Lead the way.”
The two left hand in hand.
