It's as much his fault as it is her's.
I am sure that the kids said that Melody came running onto the road from nowhere when they were asked. The scenes I saw were that Kane was not paying attention because he was looking for the mobile and swerved to avoid Melody who was already stood in the road. So his fault, unless I blinked and missed something. Although Melody locked the doors which made it all a lot worse.
They are both to blame here.. Melody was just standing in the middle of the road (she shouldn't have been there in the first place and it is not something you expect to see) and Kane should have been more alert, plus was driving a bit to fast

Bottom line is, Kane should have been looking where he was going. If he was, he'd have seen Melody in time to avoid her and the school hall. Melody locking the doors wouldn't have been such a big deal if Kane hadn't crashed into the building.

I was a bit weepy when I seen Martha and Jack in the hospital but as soon as Tony starting talking to Roman..flood gates opened and then the end when they showed you everyone grieve.. and Tony saying to Martha that Jack really loved her and he has to go through this with her..
