The stepfather of Shannon Matthews, who was missing for three weeks, has been remanded in custody over charges of possessing indecent images of children.
Craig Meehan, 22, of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, was arrested at the family home on Wednesday and appeared before the town's magistrates on Thursday.
He was accused of 11 specimen charges of possessing indecent images graded at levels one to four of seriousness.
Prosecutors alleged there were 140 indecent images on two computers.
Police said the most serious grade of indecent images is level five.
No application for bail was made at the hearing.
Shannon, nine, was missing for 24 days after failing to return from school.
Michael Donovan, 39, of Lidgate Gardens, Dewsbury, has been charged with her kidnap.
Friends of the Matthews family packed the courtroom to listen to the allegations against Mr Meehan.
The bespectacled stepfather wore a black Manchester United shirt with the name Ronaldo on the back and spoke only to confirm his name, address and age.
He stood to listen as magistrate Wayne Perriman remanded him in custody.
After her partner's arrest, Shannon's mother, Karen Matthews, was allowed a meeting with her daughter, although the schoolgirl remains in the care of Kirklees Social Services.
I hate to say it but he'll probably get off.
The guy I used to babysit for was arrested last July for having indecent images and videos of children. He had 1500 images and a few hundred videos, ranging from level one to five. He got a 12month suspended sentence.
Whether he get's off or not there is no way Shannon will get to return home now. It was reported on the news from one of Karen's friends that Karen was no longer in a relationship with Shannon's Step-father, but that won't make any difference to the police and social services.
My nephew and neice were taken into care when they were 9 & 6 because he family doctor had told my sister he suspected they had been sexuallly abused. The police think it was my sisters father-in-law as there had been rumours that he had abused his own kids when they were young. We never found out who it was because my nephewrefused to name the beast and my neice denied anything had happened to her out of fear.
My neice was returned to my sister after a couple of weeks but it took 3 years before my nephew was allowed home to stay. In this time my own Dad had been staying with my sister. He had to move out because one of the agreements with the Social Services that my nephew was only allowed to return home that there was to be no males in the house. My own brothers couldn't even visit.
Shannon will never return to her home she will be in foster care now until she is 16.
Two women relatives of Shannon Matthews' stepfather arrested in connection with her alleged abduction have been released on police bail.
Shannon's stepfather's mother Alice Meehan, 49, and sister Amanda Hyett, 25, were held earlier on Friday.
Nine-year-old Shannon went missing for 24 days after failing to return home from school in Dewsbury, West Yorks.
Her stepfather's uncle Michael Donovan, 39, has been charged with kidnapping and false imprisonment.
Amanda Hyett, of Moorside Road, Dewsbury Moor, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender while Alice Meehan was arrested on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "The two women aged 25 and 49 arrested earlier in connection with the kidnap of Shannon Matthews have both been granted police bail pending further inquiries.
"They are required to reattend in May."
The Sunday Mirror claims that Shannon does not want to go back to her mum but stay with her foster parents and the kitten. Better for her, imo, I think we shall find out a lot more horrible things relating to that family, she is better off and safe where she is now.
I can see why she wouldn't want to go back. If her step-father had anything to do with her kidnap then maybe she feels that her mother could have too. I'm not saying that the mother did have a hand in it though.
