I reckon I will get through New Moon and have started on Eclipse by the time the film comes out, but so far the book is amazing.
I read the first few HP books to my boys at bedtime. My youngest had read all the published ones by the time he was 8, and he was fighting me for the delivery of the newly published ones by the time The Order of the Pheonix was published when he was 8 and a half.
The first few books (at least) won the Smarties Gold Award for fiction for ages 9-11.
Charley should have no problems.
(My elder son only ever read the first two, he just wasn't that interested).
I read all the HP books to Marley first then she read the first three on her own. Marley reads every night. A good tip Shiv is to read the book with her to help her understand what is going on as the films leave so much out. Then when she starts to feel more confident let her read the books by herself.
Just finished New Moon and found it amazing, I hope the movie lives up to the book, but from the trailers I reckon it will live upto the book.
Do you know if there are plans for 4 movies in the twilight saga to mirror the books
Aparantly it was made official months ago, unsure were I read that, but I know they are in the middle of filming Eclipse, so I reckon there is going to be a 4th.
As a teacher I would yes. But you should consider your childs fantasy. If she is easily frightened than do not let her read them. I thought book 2 was rather scary myself. My husband was away during week nights and reading it in bed by myself was a bit scary. And yes I get spooked quiet easily.
I really need something to read, any suggestions?
I'm reading the Mark Billingham Thorne books they're a bit like Rebus if yout like crime dramas.
I'm reading his new one at the moment blood lines. I only started reading them because I heard that one of my fav actors David Morrissey is playing Thorne on sky1 this year so I'd thougt I'd check out the books and I love them.
Thanks for the suggestion. I love the Rebus books, so these sound great.
Just wanted to let everyone know about Project Gutenberg - a website where you can download hundreds of free ebooks whose copyrights have expired:
http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page
I'm currently reading Jane Austen's Persuasion. I'm using the "read online" feature 'cos I'm not sure what format to download.
There's also taking books available.
I'm stuck between reading The Time Traveller's wife or My sister's keeper again. hahaa.
time travellers wife is one of my favourites! but i find it awful confusing.
Im reading frankie boyles autobiography and going to start twilight, i havent read it yet, seen the first film but my little sister wants me to read it as she says its better. plus i have time to read on the train travellinjg to work.
Ive just finished colleen nolans autobiography.
I loved Frankie Boyle's autobiography, especially since he grew up near me and I knew a few people in the book.
I'm reading Where Rainbows End. I started it last night, and picked it straight up again this morning, I am loving it! Wanted to read it for years! Just sorry I didn't read it sooner!
Thanks for the Memories by Cecelia Ahern
Over the summer, I read the sequel to "Pillars of the earth" by Ken Follett called "world without end" and I couldn't put it down..there is around 1300 pages and I read it in 5 days.. amazing book!!! (you don't have to read the first one to enjoy the second, they are set 200 years apart)
I read both those books years ago. I can't remember much about them now, except that I really enjoyed them.
I've downloaded Amazon's Kindle for PC (available on the kindle section of Amazon) and I'm reading Blood, Sweat and Tea by Tom Reynolds. It was free, as are many other kindle books. It's about a guy who works for the London Ambulance Service and he blogs about his days. Its quite interesting if you're into that sort of thing.
I finished reading Where Rainbows End... I am in love with that book!!! I want that book to be my life! It was soooo good!
I thought id restart this thread again, with it being nearly xmas people tend to get new books and things.
I have to exams at uni left this week and then i can start reading proper books again! i cant wait. I started Cal recently and im really looking forward to carrying on with that.
Just recently I finished "to kill a mockingbird" which I really enjoyed..
I must read that again, when its not in a school setting! I always hated all books i studied at school, to kill a mockingbird being one of them. You dont appreciate them when your forced to read and analyse them, well i didnt anyway! i saw it recently at the lowry on stage so it would be interesting to see how i ofund it reading it on my own accord. The same thing happened when i re read catcher and the rye, which was the last book i read.
That is what happened with me and Wuthering Heights.. I hated it at school as I had to dissect it and all that but a few years after leaving school I picked it back up and read it and it is now one of my all time favourite books
I haven't read a book since I finished Mark Billingham's Thorne book. I'll need to get another one.
I need to get a new book too.. I am looking for Ken Follett "Fall of the Giants" and James Herbert "Ash".... hint hint Santa.. you can put them in the glove box of my ferrari that contains Josh Holloway, Matt Cardle and Sebastien Vettel
Could you not talk about Matt and Sebastian in the same sentence. I can't concentrate as it is. Do you remember that budwiser advert with the girl on Malibu beach and a guy pulls up on a motor bike with the song "More than a feeling playing" I'm that girl and Matt and Sebby are heading my way.
Nearly finished JUMP by Jilly Cooper, another novel of the Riders, Polo, Rivals genre, if you like those, you will like this one too :)
Oh I loved Jump Perdy. It is like meeting an old friend when you read one of her books.
I've read three books in the past month. I' hoping I've gotten out of my funk and am able to read again.
Prozac Nation
I read this hoping to find some deeper understand about my depression but it was mainly self-indulgent twaddle that wandered off on endless rambles. Some parts of the book were brilliant, the last 50 pages had me gripped. But I just didn't empathise with the author at all and I don't think I related to the story at all in any way. Having read the wiki page, it apparently polarised the critics. Even from the stand point of having severe depression and not being able to pull myself out of it, I still couldn't feel what she was describing or relate to any of her behaviour.
The Fry Chronicles
I read Stephen Fry's first autobiography (~1999) a few months ago and I really enjoyed it so I bought the follow up which came out in September. I adore Stephen Fry, partly because he is so open and honest and also because he's made a success of his life whilst having cyclothymia. The second book is mainly about the time after leaving prison, getting into Cambridge and his early acting career. I highly recommend this book if you like Stephen or even if you don't. It has lots of colour plates of his early years in acting, many with the delectable Hugh Laurie. It ends on the cliffhanger of his cocaine addiction, which I didn't know about. It's just a page at the end of the book where he says something about trying cocaine for the first time and using quite often, which is a story for another time... I'm hoping this will be discussed in more detail in a third book, hopefully not too far in the future.
Wasted
I read this book in two days and I really recommend it. It's one of the best autobiographies I've ever read. Its about a guy who grew up in an abusive home, developed an addiction to drugs, ended up on the streets then got his life back after about five attempts at rehab. He now works for the Probation service advising them on young offenders and how to stop re-offending. The book is very graphic in places and is shocking too. For example, he tells about the time he got high in the back seat of his car whilst his two year old son was strapped into the front seat and how he was sexually abused by a friend at the age of 7 and became sexually precocious. This is a must read for anyone interested in drug addiction, offending, homelessness or those autobiographies about abused children. Its made me view homeless people in a different light.
My next book is Crack House then its back to fiction for a while.
I finished Crack House last night. Its a good book, easy to read and very interesting.
Next book is Genesis by Karin Slaughter. I must have read this book before as the spine is creased but I can't remember anything about it. Its a long book compared to my recent reads (~350 to 550).
I've also downloaded the Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia audio books on to my ipod so I'm listening to the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe at the moment.
