for some reason the "thanks" button is not working for me today... Totally agree Alan, life doesn't end at the Irish sea and a few more people need to go beyond that...
Moonie.. never saw it like that but yes agree, Saturday afternoon not traipsing around shops sound wonderful. more time for me at the swimming pool which I must add is like 100% cheaper than in Dublin. I spend my 1st Saturday here in the supermarket going "really??? it is only that price??" Can't get over how cheap food is here. ... something are the same price but that is fine as most things are much cheaper

I am glad that things have worked out so well for you Shiv, long may it continue x

Hello again, everyone. I've just got back from a week in Ireland, spent mostly with my wife's relatives in Longford. I think the whole of Longford must be related!
The reason we went was to bury my mother-in-law's ashes. She died at the end of May and we had a cremation in June, but it was always her wish to be buried in the family plot in Longford, so we took her ashes back for the internment. Although it was in that sense a very sad occasion, it was also a joyful one too as we saw it as a celebration of her life and it was good to get the family together again. I was also able to do a bit of family history research while I was there in the Tuam and Longford registry offices.
Why is it that, apart from the staff of Budget Car Rentals, everyone in Ireland is so much more friendly than in England!? More to come on Budget Car Rentals by the way!!!
Now to catch up on the soaps.....

As promised more about Budget Car Rental, Ireland:
While we were in Ireland we hired a car from Budget Car Rental, Ireland. Whilst driving back to our hotel near Knock Airport from Longford the clutch died.
We rang Budget and told them what had happened and asked them to arrange for a replacement car to come out to us. We were told that they would contact the AA to attend us.
When the AA arrived he told us there was nothing he could do and said he would tow the car back to his garage.
We then rang Budget again and were told they would do nothing for us. They refused to send a replacement car or a taxi to pick us up. The adviser then had the gall to say that the broken clutch was down to us and we would have to pay for it.
We got our own taxi, which cost 100 Euros plus another 30 Euros the following morning to get to the airport.
Budget were obviously far more interested in retrieving their car than in doing anything for paying customers and were not prepared to help us in any way and were prepared to leave us stranded in the car park.
Since returning to England I have looked up Budget Ireland on the Internet and found that our case is very similar to that of an American, Ashley Pallotta, who Budget Ireland told it was her fault that the clutch had burnt out after she had only driven it 9 kilometres. After a two year legal battle she finally managed to get compensation out of Budget this month.

Good luck parkerman, certainly won't rent from Budget Car Rental anywhere

That is shocking customer service, but tallies with my experience of car rental services in Portugal a couple of years ago. The car we had rented was broken into by someone drilling through the lock, this mean that the car could no longer be locked. The company refused to replace the car (on the basis that it was still drivable) and charged us directly for the damage , even though it was fully insured.
We got all our money back from the insurers, including the excess and for all our losses, but it was really inconvenient not being able to leave anything in the car at all incase it was stolen.

I've just received an apology and partial refund from Budget, Ireland plus a voucher for reduced price on next rental!
