With the country in the state it is, I cannot imagine they would hand out enough money for private detectives. How much money can you get in legal aid?
Doubt it is much as most legal aid has been stopped, I believe...

You can still get legal aid in criminal cases but it is means tested. I would guess that Roy's income would take him above the level where he could apply for it.

Yes, but you can't get legal aid if you earn more than ?22,375 per year and I assume Roy receives more than that.

Considering how often people pop in to the cafe for tea and coffee, when they could pop into their nearby houses and make one much cheaper, I would think he does earn more than that.
