Emmerdale brings us the show's very own version of Misery next week as James Barton is held captive by his unstable wife Emma.
James finds himself in a terrifying situation after he breaks his leg and ends up with Emma (Gillian Kearney) as his devoted nurse at home. What could possibly go wrong?
A very sinister week for James kicks off when his son Ross (Michael Parr) has a furious showdown with him, wanting answers over his relationship with Moira.
Ross is far from happy after Moira (Natalie J Robb) tells him about James recently declaring his love for her - and the dramatic scuffle that follows leads to James falling down the stairs and injuring his leg.
Things only get worse for James when the tension later continues at the hospital - and the inevitable finally happens when Emma overhears Ross talking about his father's latest infidelity.
But rather than take the normal approach of dumping James on the spot and moving on with her life, Emma instead decides to keep her discovery to herself. She even tries to be closer than ever to James by promising to nurse him back to full health.
Bill Ward, who plays James, laughed: "James thinks he's being very nicely looked after by Emma, until he discovers that she has been putting liquid morphine in his food! As you can imagine, he's not particularly happy about that.
"But even then, he's still prepared to make a go of it with Emma, because he knows that he's not saintly white himself. He's trying his hardest to forgive her because he genuinely wants them to play happy families now. He'll do anything to make that happen."
Sounds slightly naive to us. But James finally starts to worry when it becomes clear that Emma may never actually let him leave the house again.
Bill revealed: "James is just about to go off and see the boys when in a dreadful and extraordinary piece of bad luck, he breaks his leg again! Emma ushers him back upstairs to bed and he's in a fairly substantial amount of pain.
"Emma tells James to wait for an ambulance, but he realises it's not coming when it doesn't turn up. He also sees Emma out of the window, stamping on his phone and throwing it in the nettles.
"That's when James realises things may be more serious than he thought. After that, he does try to work out a way for him to escape. That's partly by sweet-talking Emma and partly by coming up with ways to straightforward escape!
"James does use a few different tactics to try and get out, but at this point he still isn't in fear of his life. He's just trying to get out of the house, see his boys and go to the hospital."
So, did Bill look for any inspiration by watching the 1990 film version of Misery, based on Stephen King's classic novel?
"I bought the film and then didn't watch it," he admitted. "I saw it when it was out in the early '90s and what a fantastic film it was.
"But we got the writing quite early for a lot of this story. I could see that the writing was really good and very dramatic, so I didn't think it would be a good idea to watch the film.
"I could see quite clearly how this came from the character relationships that we have - it wasn't the same as Misery. Yes it has a character holding another character captive, but these are two people who are in love. That is very different to the set-up in Misery, where it's a superfan and a writer.
"So these are two equals trying to make the best of a marriage that they know is flawed. I will almost certainly watch it after all this plays out, but for now I didn't want the shadow of it hanging over me and for me to be thinking about something else."
emma will finish him off in the hospital keep him quiet to keep her boys mostly moses
Iain MacLeod has spoken out about the decision to kill off James Barton in the show's latest devastating storyline twist.
Former Corrie star Bill Ward has been written out of the soap, as his character James failed to recover from the injuries he'd sustained when his unstable wife Emma pushed him off a road bridge.
Speaking at an Emmerdale press conference, Iain was asked why James was the one to go – and whether he ever considered killing off more than just one character.
"We talked about lots of different permutations, so yes there was a possibility of more deaths," Iain admitted. "But it felt like we'd certainly earned the exit in James's case and that story was pitched a very long time ago.
"It was one of those instances where unfortunately Bill was the victim of a very good story. It was just so compelling that we just thought, 'Ugh, we kind of have to do that'. That was the one that stuck out that was the most earned, I suppose.
"It was the sort of thing where the story just evolved and it was just too good not to tell."
Iain also joked: "Obviously being in my position, the temptation is just to get the metaphorical scattergun out and take down as many people as you can, but you know, I have to rein in my crazier excesses sometimes. But yes, it did occur to us."
Iain was also full of praise for just how much Bill threw himself into the stunt scenes – even insisting on playing himself when a lifeless James was lying in the road.
He laughed: "On the roadside stuff, I'd been walking down there because I went on the location shoots. I'd assume it was a dummy and then suddenly the dummy would go, 'Hello!'
"I'd say, 'Bill, this is a real dedication to the craft. Everyone else has gone for their tea break and you're still there lying on the road!'"
Now when James is (sadly) gone and Andy too..there's not one farmer in Emmerdale-other than Moira. And this is supposed to be based in a small village on countryside...??? There's 3 vets though on a clinic-and none of them seem to be doing any work half of the time...Joke.
