Always
ok, well, this is yet another sam and phil script (who else) and it's set pretty much now, although Sam and Stuart have already been going out for a couple of months
Chapter 1
Phil breathed a heavy sigh, as he got out of his car, activated the automatic locking system and made his way towards the entrance of Sun Hill Police Station.
Here we go again, he thought to himself, yet another day of dealing with low-life scum, endless mounds of paperwork and oh yeah, witnessing the endless talents of the ‘supercouple’.
That’s what Phil had dubbed Sam and Stuart since they became an item a couple of months ago. Between their smirking to one another across the room, their ongoing flirting around the office and their incredibly annoying habit of always getting the required result on just about any and every case they worked on, Phil was pretty fed up of the whole situation.
Or course, he was totally jealous. He still harboured many feelings for Sam, which went far beyond friendship, and while Sam had never publicly returned these feelings, he had always felt a bond between them, which Sam now appeared to have completely moved on from.
And it’s my fault, Phil told himself for the millionth time in about 2 months, and now I’ve lost her for good.
Collectively, between Cindy, Kate, Heather and most recently, the way he had treated his brother, Phil couldn’t say he blamed her for looking elsewhere, although he would never admit that to anyone.
Nor would he let people see how much it hurt him inside to watch Sam so obviously happy with another man, especially one as slimy as Stuart Turner.
She thinks she’s so clever, he thought, when really the guys a complete cheat. He showed up here as a DC, and the next thing anyone knows, he’s being offered a DS’s position on a plate. A DS’s position which should have been taken by someone who had actually worked here before, and not a slime ball who just showed up one day.
Now he knew he was just humouring the green eyed monster, as he had never really got on with Suzie, and actually shuddered the thought of having her as his equal.
Upon walking into CID, Phil wasn’t surprised to see Sam sat on the end of Stuart’s desk, while he was sat in front of her on his chair. She was hanging on his every word, and giggling at some private joke between the two.
He walked over and took a seat at his desk, moments before DI Manson and DCI Meadows walked in, asking for quiet.
Phil stole a quick glace back in Sam’s direction, who, while still sitting on his desk had turned her back to Stuart so she was facing her commanding officers. Phil was unable to miss the protective hand Stuart had placed around Sam’s back, and onto the inside of her thigh.
Refocusing his attention, Phil zoned into the current discussion just in time to hear Neil saying, “With much resistance, we have successively managed to win back the services of the newly appointed hero of Nottingham.” He gestured behind him, just as DC Jo Masters entered the room, to applause and whistles.
“You caught the bad guys then?” Mickey shouted over the din.
“You doubted me?” Jo asked with raised eyebrows.
Mickey, on noticing her expression knew better than to disagree, “Never”, he told her. “It’s good to have you back.”
“It’s good to back”, she told him with a wink.
Phil had once again let his eyes wander back to Sam, who whispering something into Stuarts ear. The second his face broke into a smirk, Sam looked up, as if sensing that someone was watching her. She met Phil’s gaze, before he looked away sharply and tried to cover up his being caught by shouting to Jo, “It’s nice to have some eye candy back around here again.” That comment received a few more wolf whistles, before she playfully slapped him on the arm, before commenting, “Nice to know some things never change.”

Chapter 2
While everyone was busy welcoming Jo back, Sam gave Stuart a quick kiss on the cheek, before picking up some files and returning to her own desk.
Try as she might to concentrate on her paperwork, she couldn’t get the hurt she had seen in Phil’s eyes out of her mind. After several minutes feeling guilty, she shook her head in an attempt to clear her thoughts.
I’m with Stuart now, she reminded herself, and I like him. He’s caring and funny and smart and he seems to be genuinely interested in me, rather than everything that walks past in a skirt.
Not for the first time that morning, she sighed as her eyes wandered over to where Phil was now talking to Neil and Zain.
Probably about some important case, she reasoned. Maybe they had a new lead on the Amy Tennant case, although she doubted it that was true, it would have been confined to 3 officers.
She felt those feelings of helplessness and despair inside her, those feelings she had felt when her own daughter Abi had been abducted a couple of years ago. While most people sympathised with Amy’s parents, Sam truly knew what they were going through.
Still watching Phil, subconsciously now, she remembered how he had helped her through that horrific time. He had stood by her for months, comforting her. He had even tried to warm her off that monster by the name of Hugh Wallis, Abi’s abductor, but she hadn’t listened. When indeed, Hugh turned out to be not only Abi’s abductor, but also her manipulator and psychological bully, Phil had continued to support her, and not said, “I told you so”, not even once.
But then everything went so wrong, she remembered, thinking of Cindy, Kate and most recently Heather Lee’s, the solicitor, who Phil had slept with to get a result on a frustrating case.
She jumped a little as a shrill beep emanated from her computer screen, indicating that she had received an Instant Message. Opening it, she read that it was from Jo.
Jo: Hey Sam, u ok?
Sam instantly felt guilty. She and Jo, despite earlier clashes and disagreements, have developed what some may call a close friendship, and she hadn’t really welcomed her back, in her attempt to avoid Phil as much as possible.
Sam: Yeah, I’m fine. Sorry Jo, I didn’t mean to ignore you. It really is good to have you back, it’s not been the same around here since you left.
Jo: :) Thanks Sarge. Nice to know I was missed. So . . . how much have I missed?
Sam: Not much. Ramini left just as Suzie took her Sargeants exams but by the time she realised she’d passed, the DCI had already promoted a DC from another station.
Jo: Oooh, I bet that went down well. I take it that’s the guy who had his placed intimately on your leg before??? :D
Sam: JO!!!
Jo: Sorry, but I couldn’t help but notice. So . . . ?
Sam: What?
Jo: Details?
Sam: There are no details. We’ve only been together for a few weeks, a couple of months at most.
Jo: And what about Phil?
Sam felt a little anger bubbling beneath the surface, at the same time a lump formed in the back of her throat.
Sam: What about Phil? It had nothing to do with him who I choose to go out with, and come to think of it, it has nothing to do with you either DC Masters.
Sam shut down her PC, grabbed her coat and made towards the exit doors of CID, knocking her chair flying as she did so.
