Delko was originally going to turn up dead in the season premiere. It’s true! When Adam Rodriguez failed to come to terms on a new contract over the summer, CBS allegedly recommended that producers simply write it in that Delko didn’t survive last May’s cliffhanger. “But I wasn’t comfortable with that,” says Rodriguez. “And I spoke to [exec producer] Ann Donahue and she wasn’t comfortable about this either; we really wanted to make sure that the character had a proper sendoff. So she petitioned CBS to make this work.” Now Rodriguez will return for a total of 10 episodes (not the seven I reported last week), during which he’ll change professions and sort out his complicated relationship with Calleigh. “Like any great love story, I don’t know that the books will ever be closed on them,” says Rodriguez of Calleighko. Housekeeping note: Rodriguez has shot three of his 10 Miami episodes so far. He’ll juggle the remaining seven with his five-episode arc on Ugly Betty.

Wooo that mean he isn't going to die :D?
I really like him and Calleigh as a couple though. Shame he will be leaving.

'CSI: Miami' star Adam Rodriguez has announced that he is returning full-time to the series as forensics expert Eric Delko.

TVGuide.com reports that Rodriguez wrote on his Twitter page on Friday: "I have some news that I hope will make 'CSI: Miami' fans happy. Eric Delko will be back full time 4 all of season 9!!!"

Rodriguez has appeared on 'CSI: Miami' since 2002 but has only appeared in a few episodes this season after Delko left the CSI team.

Last week, Adam Rodriguez whipped CSI: Miami fans into a frenzy when he announced via Twitter that “Eric Delko will be back full time 4 all of season 9!” The news came seven months after the actor went off contract with the hit procedural after failing to come to terms on a new deal with CBS. (At the time, Rodriguez said he agreed to return for 10 episodes to give Delko a proper send-off.) Why the turnaround? And what does this mean for Delko (or, more importantly, Delko and Calleigh)? Rodriguez, who’s currently wrapping up his recurring stint on Ugly Betty as Hilda’s beau, took some time off from fighting a nasty cold to give me the scoop. (Additional reporting by Sandra Gonzalez)

I thought you were leaving this season. What happened?
ADAM RODRIGUEZ: That was the plan. As we talked about last time, we got to a crossroads last year where [CBS and I] wanted different things. And one thing that was important was going back to finish the character properly. I think when the fans got the news that Delko wasn’t going to be back full-time and when they actually saw he wasn’t back full-time, they felt there was something missing from the show. They were very vocal about that and I have to give credit to CBS that they paid attention to it.

In other words, they met your demands?
RODRIGUEZ: That certainly had something to do with it. I think, you know, a lot of it had to do with both parties even being willing to hash something out. [The first] time, it was really CBS that walked away [from negotiations] quickly. I’m not going to pull any punches, that’s just the way it was. I think that fans really made it known that the show wasn’t the same without Delko. And like I said, CBS was wise enough to pay attention to that and make sure that they kept the chemistry of the show the way the fans wanted it.

Did CBS specifically tell you this was a result of fan response?
RODRIGUEZ: They certainly said that was one of the things. There’s no doubt that was the major reason.

Some fans are worried that, for financial reasons, producers will be forced to cut another member of the cast now that you’re back.
RODRIGUEZ: I would certainly hope not. I would be very, very disappointed if that was the decision that was made. I can certainly tell you that the agreement we came to should not warrant that happening at all.

Should I take that to mean they didn’t back the Brinks truck up to your house?
RODRIGUEZ: [Laughs] Certainly, I can’t complain, but, no, that wasn’t the case. One of the things [they did] to sweeten the deal was they’re allowing me to write and direct at least one episode next season. That was something that was really attractive to me.

Is it safe to assume that Delko will be leaving the D.A.’s office and rejoining the team?
RODRIGUEZ: That’s my guess. I don’t have confirmation of that, but I don’t know what else [they could do]… I think it might be interesting to explore [his current job] a little further before he actually comes back to the team.

What does this mean for Delko and Calleigh?
RODRIGUEZ: That also remains to be seen. I’m curious to see what they have in mind. But I think we have to go all the way down the road at this point. I would really love to explore the relationship fully and see what it’s like to have these people that have had this attraction to each other and are finally getting into this relationship for real after all this time. It certainly took a long enough for it to actually happen. I think we owe it to the people who wanted to see it happen to give them the whole ride as opposed to making it a short one, [especially since] it’s not about me leaving now. Now that I’m going to stay, I think that we’ll have a little more latitude as far as what we can do with the relationship.

With more than 15 million albums sold worldwide and film success including The Devil's Rejects and House Of 1000 Corpses, it was only a matter of time before Rob Zombie turned his talents to the small screen. The musician will make his debut as a TV director on next week's instalment of CSI: Miami - which also features a guest turn by his wife Sheri Moon Zombie - as Horatio and Delko travel to LA when a secret from Jesse's past threatens to return. We caught up with Zombie to hear his thoughts on the experience.

How did you get involved with CSI: Miami?
"It's a bit of an odd pairing but the connection is just as odd. About 5 years ago my first AD, Marco Black, went to work on CSI. He's been there five years and now he's one of the producers. Every year he would call me and say 'You gotta direct an episode for us!' and every year I could never fit their schedule into my schedule due to touring or shooting a movie or something - there was always a conflict until finally, this year, it worked out."

Are you a fan of the show?
"Truthfully I never watched the show until I started to get involved with it. I mean I was aware of it and had seen it but I don't particularly watch a lot of TV. Mostly I knew about it from my mum - she loves it! That was part of the reason too. I was excited to do it because for once I get to do something my parents can tell their friends about without being mortified!"

Were you tempted to steep the show in your own style?
"That was the conflict all the way through in a way - I wanted to bring my vibe to the show but I wanted to keep it true to CSI - because obviously it has a huge fanbase and a formula that people love. I wanted to vary within the boundaries of the show. The style of the show doesn't particularly fit the style of what I normally do but I felt there was enough room to incorporate my style into their style. It's hard to explain but when people see it they'll get it."

What was it like directing David Caruso?
"It was great. He's a very serious person with his work, which is good because I'm serious too. At the end of the day all that matters is the work. You want it to be great and he takes his character and his job very seriously. He has a lot of scenes with the guest stars - in fact most of his scenes are with the guest stars I cast. There's some really superior acting going on in this episode in particular."

Was there anything you wanted to do in the episode but couldn't?
"Not really. I didn't write the script - the script was something that was written that was already going to pass. It was little things here and there and I just deferred to someone on the show. I was doing a scene with Michael Madsen and he asked 'Can I be smoking a cigarette in this scene?' and I was like 'I don't know, let's ask a producer' and he was like 'No no no, CBS says no smoking.' It was always weird little things like that. People would ask ' This person's stabbed, how much blood shall we use?' and I was like 'As much as we can for TV, I guess'. I was amazed at some of the things we did get away with."

Will you be directing more TV in the future?
"Possibly, depending on what the show is and if I feel there's any reason for me to do it. Probably if I was to direct TV again I would want to be even more involved from an earlier level. I was involved pretty early on from the script level but I'd like to start even earlier. I didn't want to direct something you couldn't even tell I'd directed so if I did more TV I would want to be even more involved."

CSI: Miami continues Mondays at 10pm on CBS in the US and Tuesdays at 10pm on Five in the UK.

Another long-running CBS procedural is downsizing: Sources confirm that CSI: Miami has released Eddie Cibrian (Cardoza) from his contract.

A CBS rep declined to comment, but a source close to the show confirms that Cibrian’s contract option has not been picked up. The actor joined Miami last season — in large part to fill the void left by original castmember Adam Rodriguez (Delko). But with Rodriguez returning full time this fall, producers decided to put the focus back on the original, core team.
