Routh's character will also serve as a mentor to Chuck, as well as a rival for Sarah's affections.

Chuck Season 4 starts on Living 14/10

NBC is reportedly close to renewing comedy-drama Chuck for a fifth season.

The last two episodes have achieved ratings of 4.1m, with the show previously hitting a series low of 4.03m on April 11.

However, TV Line now reports that the series, which stars Zachary Levi as bumbling spy Chuck Bartowski, will return for at least thirteen more episodes in the fall.

Though NBC declined to comment, the network is believed to be finalising a deal with Warner Bros. to bring the show back.

Another NBC series, Parenthood, is also reported to be close to receiving an official pick-up for a third season. The show, which stars Peter Krause and Lauren Graham, is likely to be renewed for a full 22 episodes.

Chuck co-creator Chris Fedak recently claimed that the conclusion to the current fourth season is not intended as a series finale, while Parenthood's executive producer Jason Katims also admitted that he is "cautiously optimistic" about the show's future.

The Chuck season finale airs this Monday at 8/7c, while the second season of Parenthood concluded on April 19.
