View Full Version : Joe meets a watery end
CURSED Corrie widow Gail Platt is about to lose ANOTHER lover to a violent death.
Live-in boyfriend Joe McIntyre will perish in a horrific sailing accident later this year.
The tragic mum of three's bad luck started 20 years ago when hubby number one Brian Tilsley (Christopher Quinten) was stabbed to death in a nightclub brawl.
Second spouse Martin Platt (Sean Wilson) managed to escape alive when Gail divorced him in 1999 after discovering he'd had an affair.
But four years later serial killer third hubby Richard Hillman (Brian Capron) drowned trying to murder the whole family by driving them into a canal.
Now Joe (Reece Dinsdale) is also set for a watery grave after Gail's dad Ted (Michael Byrne) buys the family a boat and names it GAILFORCE.
The vessel ends up bringing nothing but misery when Joe gets into difficulties and goes down with the ship.
Gail, played by Corrie veteran Helen Worth, 58, is currently helping Joe beat his addiction to prescription painkillers.
But ITV bosses decided to kill him off after actor Reece, 50, spurned a big pay rise because he didn't want to become typecast.
A source told TV Biz: "There were lots of plans for Joe's character so it was a shame he wanted to leave.
"Now they're going to bump him off dramatically. After he snubbed their offer the last thing the bosses were going to do was leave the door open."

OMG! I never saw this coming!
OMG! I never saw this coming!
I think the story was rewritten because Joe (Reece Dinsdale) wanted his ending to be final.

even so, it is such a random way to go! couldn't he have just been hit by a bus or fallen off a ladder at work? no one in the soap has ever expressed an interest in sailing!
Wasnt he suppose to die from an overdose at some stage?
Either way couldnt care less how he dies
Hope it is not too long before he goes, I find him boring now

PILL-popper Joe McIntyre will be bumped off by Corrie bosses in a Canoe Man-style insurance scam that goes horribly wrong.
Joe plans to go missing on a boating holiday with fiancée Gail Platt - aping real-life John Darwin's fake death while out canoeing.
But unlike Darwin, who got away with the 2002 ruse before being rumbled and jailed last year, Joe - played by Reece Dinsdale, 50 - really does end up dead.
As he prepares to jump off his boat, a strong gust of wind blows its sail pole, which knocks him unconscious and into the freezing Lake District water.
Our source on the cobbles revealed: "It's a copycat storyline of Darwin's insurance scam.
"Corrie bosses have decided that Joe will meet a watery end.
"He decides to fake his own death to avoid his crippling debt problems and leave wife Gail with the proceeds from his life insurance."
The final straw for the prescription drug addict comes when debt collectors threaten to harm daughter Tina unless he comes up with thousands.
So Joe plans the Lake District break with Gail, played by Helen Worth, for the launch of their renovated sailing boat Gail Force.
In scenes to be screened in February, Joe bids a last farewell to Tina who, although she knows he is seriously in debt, has no idea she will never see her dad again.
After calling round to see her at the flat she shares with lover Jason Grimshaw, Joe says: "I've come to say goodbye.
"Gail and me are off to the Lakes sailing for a few days to clear our heads over this debt business."
And as Joe squeezes her for the last time, he adds: "I am going to really miss you, you know?
"I am so proud of how you've turned out. You're a better daughter than I ever deserved and I love you so much."
Tina makes light of her dad's sincerity, telling him: "Don't squeeze me so tight dad - you're only going for a few days."
But Joe will never come back, despite packing a survival bag with dry clothes, a map and compass.
Darwin, who wrote his memoirs in jail, told how he too nearly died after paddling out too far from the coast in vicious North Sea currents in 2002.
But he survived and went into hiding, while wife Anne reported him drowned in a canoe accident.
The couple fled to Panama. But Darwin reappeared in London in December 2007, claiming amnesia.
In July 2008, he was found guilty of the £250,000 insurance and pensions swindle.
Both he and Anne were jailed for more than six years.
Corrie bosses, inspired by the saga, decided to bump Joe off after Reece made up his mind to quit over fears he was being typecast.
Execs offered a pay rise to £130,000 from £100,000 - but he insisted on going.
Now, by ensuring Joe dies, bosses have slammed the door shut on any prospect of Reece returning.

So Joe's death is going be a lot more exciting than his life, eh? Sounds like a good storyline.
It's a shame that Joe is such a dull character - I had high hopes when I heard Reece Dinsdale was coming into Corrie 'cos I've always liked him in other things. The Corrie bosses obviously thought he had lots more potential, though, if they wanted to give him a big pay rise.
THE body of Coronation Street's Joe McIntyre is dragged from a lake - after his plot to fake his own death goes terribly wrong.
The kitchen fitter, played by Reece Dinsdale, plans to jump from his boat on holiday in the Lake District with new bride Gail in an insurance scam based on real-life Canoe Man fraudster John Darwin.
Joe hopes the con will solve his problems with a loan shark. He intends to swim to the shore of Lake Windermere from his boat the Gail Force and disappear.
But soap fans will see a gust of wind swing the boat's boom against his head, knocking him unconscious.
He topples into the freezing water and drowns.
Gail (Helen Worth), whose wedding to Joe is due to be screened after Christmas, is devastated at the loss of her fourth hubby.
Joe's watery end will be screened next month on the ITV1 show.

me and my mam thought this would be the way he died, it was when he said the lines, we'll just take her out on windermere! anyone whose been to windermere will know the lines w;ll just take her out are impossible, if you dont know what your doing its lethal, i went out with a mate and had a few close calls with a ferrys!
Looking forward to the storyline though, at least the insurance scam explains why he is going to die, its not just really random as we first thought.,
