As the new owner of the garage, Elle sets about making Lucas’ working life a misery, starting by demoting him and offering Steph the job as manager. Steph doesn’t want to be a pawn in their relationship game, but she knows Elle won’t give the job back to Lucas. And when pushed to admit it by Elle, Steph has to acknowledge Lucas has not been a great manager of late. When Steph tries to discuss it with Lucas he turns on her, accusing her of taking revenge for him trying to kiss her. Hurt, and furious that he won’t take responsibility for the mess he has made of his life, Steph decides to take the job. Elle hits on a perfect punishment for Lucas at Paul’s Buck’s Party, but when she sees him at the party, she is struck by her feelings for him, and tries to warn him off. But a chance remark from Toadie causes things to flare up again, and Elle is determined to punish Lucas once and for all.
Declan’s attempts to ignore his birthday are thwarted by Rebecca. Realising through her example that celebrating his birthday is more important to other people than to him, Declan surprises everyone by suggesting a party. He tries to put on a brave face, but when Rebecca and Paul reveal their present was to be a night away for him and Bridget, Declan’s façade cracks. Ringo helps him realise he doesn’t have to be brave all the time, and Declan decides to take him on the trip with him.
Tuesday 18th August
Lucas tries to rise above Elle’s malicious stunt of sending the Buck’s Night to a casino but finds himself tempted to gamble. He confronts Elle who reveals she overheard him blaming her for his gambling problem when he attended a GA meeting. Lucas stands by his conviction that suburban life with Elle triggered his problem and it’s like a knife through poor Elle’s heart. But Lucas has a sudden flash of insight when Dan takes Elle to task over her casino stunt and he finally admits that the problem is all his. Reconciliation seems inevitable but Elle’s rocked when Lucas claims he needs space to heal and rejects her. With the last of her heart and her dignity squashed, how will Elle react?
Perturbed by Kate’s harsh assessment of fathers who abandon their families, Sophie starts asking questions about her own father. Kate refuses to engage on the topic and after some advice from Toadie, Sophie goes to Harry, who is more forthcoming and shares happy recollections. Although he’s expressed anger at their Dad in the past, Harry points to the fact that he sent Christmas presents for them every year, and for that reason, he can’t have been all bad. But Kate reacts angrily and Donna is the one to finally uncover that their father wasn’t the decent guy Harry remembers.
Honesty continues to be an issue in the Kennedy-Fitzgerald marriage until Dan and Libby are reminded what’s really important.
